All the sidebar content (including study materials, links etc!) is in this post for easy visibility and access via mobile.

Since ~50% of the sub's traffic comes from mobile devices nowadays, I decided to address the issue of sidebar visibility by stickying its content in the front page.

Free iPhone tool for your own Greek word list: one card on your Lock Screen each time you pick up your phone (beta, looking for testers)

I made a free iPhone and iPad flashcard app for the words that need small, daily reps, and I'm looking for a few Greek learners to test it.

One card from your own list sits on your Lock Screen widget. Each time you pick up your phone, you see it, answer in your head, tap to check, then grade it right on the widget. No app to open.

How it works:

  • paste your list, one card per line, for example "ευχαριστώ - thank you" or "το σπίτι - the house"
  • a Quizlet export works too
  • no list yet? ask any AI chat for one, for example "40 common Greek verbs with their present tense, one per line: word - meaning", check it, and paste the answer
  • set a date (a certificate exam, a trip, or just "in 30 days"), and spaced repetition (FSRS) spreads the reviews over the days left

Free, no account, no in-app purchases, no ads.

What it does well: words with their article, verb forms, short phrases. What it doesn't do: listening, speaking, grammar lessons. It's for the list you already have, next to whatever course you use.

One honest note: if Greek letters or accents ever look wrong on a widget, please tell me - that's exactly the feedback I need.

See how it looks (the TestFlight link is on the page): https://terminus-cards.pages.dev/?tag=reddit-greek

What would you put on it first - vocabulary with articles, verb forms, or phrases?

Is Δεν necessary when talking about something I "never" do?

Hello lovely Greekophiles!

If I'm talking about something I don't ever do, for example Ποτέ πίνω κρασί, do I need to slap that negating word δεν in front of it to make sense?

Just making sure I'm not being redundant, or leaving something out.

Thanks, this sub has been terrific answering my Greek language questions, and I really appreciate it!

Hi! My boyfriend and I are looking for an online Greek teacher for beginner lessons once a week. We’d like to learn together, in English, and arrange the day and time flexibly from week to week because our schedules vary.

Our budget is up to €20 for a 60-minute lesson. Please comment or message me with your availability and rates. Thank you!

Update on my Greek app: Plenty of new content, would love your thoughts!

Howdy everyone! I've been working on my Greek language learning app a lot over the past few weeks and finally have content across all levels from beginner to advanced.

It's still a work in progress but there is a tonne of reading/listening, grammar explanations and exercises, and some games to make practice more engaging.

I built it with myself in mind as I'm an intermediate learner looking to get fluent. I'd love to know if you find it useful!

You can check it out here: www.greekdaily.app

Σας ευχαριστώ! Να είστε καλά!

Shape of Omega

Thumbnail

I was comparing majuscule to minuscule Greek letters and theorized a possible evolution on how the lowercase came about. Nearly every letter has a reasonable change except, Omega.

In Greek inscriptions (on stone), Omega can either be seen as a open-torn O (Ω), or something resembling a "w".

I wanted to find a midpoint in the transition where it looks halfway between the two, but i couldn't. It's either "ω" or "Ω" and they're totally different. (I've also known there's another variant where it looks like an underlined O)

So how did it evolve actually?

15th October edit: Some people think i don't know the difference between uppercase omega and lowercase, I DO KNOW! I'm asking how did Ω evolve into ω since we all know lowercase comes from uppercase but I'm confused why on inscriptions (that usually have just uppercase letters) 'ω' is used? There are also some useful comments I've seen and i gladly appreciate those.

"patronizing"

I often wonder what a good translation for the word "patronizing" is and I am not sure I can find it. You hear it and read it usually in a negative context like "Don't patronize me" but the various translations I find online don't seem satisfying.

The most usual "συγκαταβατικός" usually has a positive meaning in Greek, like someone who is διαλλακτικός and καλόβολος. I don't think I have seen it used in a negative context often. Προστατευτικός is also not it. Maybe χειραγωγώ is closer to it? Would love to read people's thoughts.
