General Group Projects

WTF is up with this requirement in business courses? It always ends up falling on one or two people and then the others get minor deductions. So you’re not actually learning how to work in a group anyways lol

It’s not just business lol. Almost every course in my major has required a group project. Do they let y’all do peer evaluations? Give em zeros

Yeah and they just get basically 10 points deducted. I’m so over it!

Dang, that sucks! Our professors check edit history and evals to see how each person contributed. So in a group of 4, two people could get an A and the other two get an F

Now this is accountability! I had a project last semester and he said at each stage they would get 10 points deducted. We reported the slacker multiple times. We all got a 100 on both deliverables. He got a 90 and 80. Like wtf? For not doing anything…

I def do but honestly, the just get like 10 points deducted. A low A/high B is really not a punishment when you do nothing. It’s so annoying.

I hated business because of that. I always had very big problems with my business peers and was almost about to get in a big fight with one of them during a lecture.

I totally understand why. Fully. I’m so over it.

I have a pretty solid peer review and reporting with point deductions. Not only do the slackers lose points, they have their inability to work with others annotated on their letter of recommendation for medical school.

I love this because it really isn’t fair for the projects to fall on a couple of students and I’ve seen it happen time and time again where they ignore you until the day before.

Why even bother writing someone a bad letter of rec just tell them you can’t write it in good faith.

u/FierceCapricorn didn't say it was a bad letter of rec. Academically, the student might be a very strong option for medical school and they might be a great person to write that. But the schools should also know about this as well as the academic strengths of the student.

I carry every group i’m in. I’m just not spiteful enough to write someone a bad letter to ruin their future over a single assignment.

Because the have other good qualities. AAMC has changed their guidelines for recommenders. We have to address a variety of skills, especially of the schools adopt a holistic approach to admissions.

I absolutely agree! I’m in the program and I literally get a headache dealing with this group projects. I do my part but others don’t have the same energy/interest as you and you are handling the load of the whole project.

I have a political joke but I’ll refrain. 🥲
There should be standard deductions for participation and it should reflect the actual effort and work done for each student clearly. That said, it’s been rare to find a group of everyone just doing what they’re supposed to so you kind of have to just enjoy the game because it’s likely going to be a case by case basis dependent on your professor and group.
