If AMD were sensible, they'd realise that Nvidia has actually left the entire consumer GPU market open and proceed to flip their fortunes on their own consumer GPUs to grab that market. The 9070 XT is currently $400 cheaper than the 5070 Ti (9070 XT uses GDDR6 VRAM rather than GDDR7 which meant their chips are slightly less in demand), whilst offering comparable performance.

Of course though, this is AMD so what they will actually do is try to chase Nvidia in the AI space when they have no real hope of ever being competitive with them.

I don't see how ending production of the 5090 means "leaving the entire consumer GPU market open"

that card was unattainable for most gaming consumers either way

3

u/gamas 4d ago

that card was unattainable for most gaming consumers either way

Have you seen current prices of the rest of their lineup? Only the 5060 is in a reasonable range.

2

u/Macharius 4d ago

uh, have you seen what's happened to the 5060s? They're up in the $800s now. Insane for what that card is.

3

u/gamas 4d ago

Huh apparently the US has it worse than the UK on this then (here they're about £450 which is still way more than they are worth but at least are in a range where a consumer would consider it).

1

u/jaymp00 4d ago

It's the 16 GB 5060ti that's horribly overpriced. It's so bad that you might as well step into the 70 tier for a similar price. The 8 GB version is almost half the price of that.

If AMD were sensible they'd go all in the AI craze the same as Nvidia.

Both those companies exist for profit making.

12

u/Jaggedmallard26 4d ago

All of the software tooling is designed for Nvidia cards and Nvidia's tech for AI workloads is far in advance of AMDs.

u/NoxiousStimuli 4d ago

It's a real shame that Nvidia has essentially exited the consumer GPU market then, isn't it.

AMD's usage of open sourced APIs is going to be a huge boon when the last CUDA cards all die.

3

u/Old_Leopard1844 4d ago

Boon how?

1

u/NoxiousStimuli 4d ago

CUDA is a locked down spec, when Nvidia exits the consumer GPU market, it'll make all those libraries and apps that use it utterly unusable when the last cards die. People joke about not moving on from the 1080Ti, but eventually it won't be a joke.

AMD's path was more open sourced, ROCm isn't locked down like CUDA is, so in the event AMD also exits, there's space for another company to enter the market, however unlikely that might be. More options is more better.

Not to mention all those CUDA specific engine optimisations and technologies that Nvidia has been aggressively pushing the last 20? years. Poof.

Yes and no, there is business sense in not putting all your eggs in one basket. Especially when your competitor has a monopoly on one particular kind of basket.

3

u/mikail511 4d ago

One’s a teaspoon, the other is a very large basket

-1

u/El_Gran_Redditor 4d ago

Also all the eggs taste like shit and nobody wants to eat them.

1

u/Entonations 4d ago

Save us intel?

-4

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

That wouldn't be sensible at all, I don't think there's an entry point left for another company to do well with AI, the peak has already been reached. If AMD was truly smart they'd go all in on gaming.

19

u/SagittaryX 4d ago

AMD is already in the AI space and has been forever. Maybe the more general audience of /r/games just isn't aware since it's a smaller player and very much datacenter focused.

11

u/lolwatokay 4d ago

AMD’s focus is AI currently though

-9

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

That's why I said if AMD was smart.

7

u/Gandalftron 4d ago

What you are saying makes no sense. The money to be made in the AI market will be orders of magnitude larger than gaming.

-8

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

It makes no sense to you, but it does make sense if you have any idea how the market is moving and what's currently happening in the tech sector.

There's almost no money in AI currently, apart from huge amounts of investor money and money that the big companies funnel around from one to another. Not a single company so far has made any money with AI. None. We are a lot, and I mean a lot closer to the bubble bursting than most of you are realizing.

5

u/Oofric_Stormcloak 4d ago

But that's not what AMD would be trying to do? They'd be primarily a hardware supplier, like Nvidia, which absolutely is making money.

-1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

I don't think you understand how a bubble works.

9

u/DoorHingesKill 4d ago

I don't think you have the faintest understanding of finances or economics, other than rambling about "bubble, bubble, it's a bubble, they make no money, it's a bubble."

Samsung just made $80 billion in net profits in a single quarter. Nvidia brings home $200 billion a year. AMD's data center sector is up 110% year on year.

Nvidia is currently spending $6 billion a quarter on dividends alone. $24 billion a year back to shareholders, what do you think how they do that? With bank loans?

If only these highly successful billion dollar companies were as smart as the average redditor who never leaves their basement…

0

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Buddy boy, I work in the industry. I have first hand knowledge. And we are 100% in an enormous bubble currently.
And what are you even talking about? Are all companies with large amount of cashflow infallible?

7

u/DoorHingesKill 4d ago

You work in the industry and you're hopping on social media to argue that AMD should focus on its gaming business (11% of its data center revenue, with a horrible margin) instead of focusing on its data center business (growing 100+% YoY, 31% margin, making up 60% of total company revenue).

Okay, "buddy boy", thank you for your insights.

1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. And you will realize why eventually.
Edit: Ah, you're following me around in multiple discussion threads now, uach. Please pick one and focus on that one. Thanks.

11

u/HappyVlane 4d ago

There is still vastly more money in AI than gaming, especially if you can provide an alternative to Nvidia.

Nvidia only keeps their gaming business to diversify and treats it like a side hustle and even then AMD doesn't really compete. It makes no sense for anyone who could do AI to go into gaming, which AMD knows and that's why they do AI.

5

u/deceitfulninja 4d ago

Thats a crazy conclusion. Thats like saying no other car manufacturer should try, Ford has this whole thing on lock down with the model t.

1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Pretty bad analogy, have you seen how extremely hard certain big car brands like almost all german ones are currently falling behind the curve?

1

u/deceitfulninja 4d ago

Like AMD has. Still letting NVidia continue to have a defacto monopoly in this entire sector isnt good for anyone. And it isnt good for innovation.

1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Who is letting Nvidia have a defacto monopoly on the sector?

0

u/Viggy2k 4d ago

Mate, you're cooked if you think nobody else can enter the market.

How many tech giants have risen and fallen in the past 20 years?

You're argument is nonsense.

1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Yeah imagine that, if a tech giant falls, another one can enter. Also, not the topic at hand and I didn't say that. Try reading and more imporant understanding the whole point before injecting you into a discussion.

0

u/Viggy2k 4d ago

Mate I just reread it and frankly you're right.

I have no idea what you're arguing for.

You flip flop every comment.

You know how i can tell im debating a child? Besides the fact you dont understand how business works? You immaturely downvote every response when im being completely civil with you.

1

u/Old_Leopard1844 4d ago

In 20 years?

Uuuugh, none? AMD bought ATI, but that's about it?

2

u/snowolf_ 4d ago

Gaming hardware is a drop of water compared to the AI ocean. Even being second best is a gigantic opportunity.

-1

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

Up until the bubble bursts, which it will.

6

u/snowolf_ 4d ago

Are there any signs things are going that way or do you just wish for a bubble that will burst?

3

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

The fact that 95% of companies implementing AI not seeing any profits/improvements to their cash/workflow and the increasing panic surrounding behemoths like OpenAI would be the first indicators, yes. Also the fact that all the money being invested is basically just investor money shoveled from one giant to another.

7

u/SaveADay89 4d ago

What proof do you have of this? I keep hearing about a bubble bursting, but if that's like 5-10 years, then AMD won't care.

2

u/SukiPhoenix 4d ago

It's just from delusional people who hate AI.

0

u/Whiskiie 4d ago

I don't have proof of an event that has yet to happen, no. The other statements from my post are verified and you can look them up on google or any search engine of your choice.

2

u/Saiing 4d ago

Gamers will still be there after the AI bubble bursts. They're not going to suddenly say "hey I know longer want an nvidia/AMD gpu because they abandoned us for the Ai industry". The pre-bubble status quo will just resume.

-3

u/oyvho 4d ago

No, since the AI bubble will burst soon enough.

3

u/johnniebalkany 4d ago

That'd be excellent, but sadly I think that's just wishful thinking.

-4

u/oyvho 4d ago

It's not making money.

5

u/metal079 4d ago

It definitely is for nvidia

-5

u/oyvho 4d ago

No, AI still isn't making money. Investors investing isn't the same as a thing making money, and right now there aren't a whole lot of people willing to spend money on access to AI.

10

u/Fine-Young8978 4d ago

Companies are paying Nvidia to use their compute for AI so actually Nvidia is pretty much the only one actually making money.

2

u/planetarial 4d ago

Selling shovels during the gold rush as they say

6

u/KrombopulosMichael 4d ago

Chip companies are posting real record profits. Look up Nvidias Q2 results, they hit $89B in data center revenue.

1

u/metal079 4d ago

No.. Nvidia is making cards, companies are buying these cards, therefore, Nvidia is making money. It's not hard to understand. Whether ai companies fail or don't, it doesn't matter.

-3

u/TampaPowers 4d ago edited 3d ago

Both those companies exist for profit making.

I hate this so much. Corporations do not or should not exist just to generate ever larger revenue. The idea was they add something to society and we reward them with profits for that. Not that they own all the money and fuck us over without buying dinner first.

Edit: The level of propaganda you all have already bought into thinking the rewritten history of all this is the truth is staggering. If this unchecked capitalism idea is so great then you should all be hating on the Costco hotdogs and chicken and boycott Bosch for being a non-profit yes? The stock market was literally setup to allow corporations to get investment and what they did with that benefited us all, not just them.

2

u/SukiPhoenix 4d ago

When was that ever the idea? You're just making up shit now, companies only priority has been to increase revenue and profit.

1

u/TampaPowers 3d ago

That's how much history has already been rewritten and propagandized into this unchecked capitalism idea.

1

u/SukiPhoenix 3d ago

Okay comrade

1

u/johnniebalkany 4d ago

The "western" world was built on capitalistic ideals (extracting value for the owners i.e. those with pre-existing capital at the expense of those generating the "excess").

It's been like this for hundreds of years, sadly.

1

u/TampaPowers 3d ago

Try reading a bit of history, specifically why the stock market was setup in the first place. Certainly not to extract more value from people. To buy into the idea of unchecked capitalism being the status quo since always takes a serious lack of understanding on how we got here.

1

u/johnniebalkany 3d ago

The modern stock market began in early 17th-century Amsterdam with the creation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1602.

And what was the VOC used for? Exploting people by all means possible in the name of pure profit to bring home to.

15

u/--THRILLHO-- 4d ago

But what do you actually want them to do? You've just said they're offering a decent card at a decent price. So they need to...do what they're doing?

4

u/gamas 4d ago

Actually push FSR tech as the primary gaming upscaling solution. At the moment AMD invest nothing into actually getting their tech stack out there which means we have a situation where 1000s of games have DLSS4 whilst FSR4 is only on like a few hundred.

Since they released their equivalent to Ray Reconstruction in December, there have been literally 9 games with Ray Regeneration support.

3

u/Bagged_Milk 4d ago

Produce reliable drivers. I had a 7900XTX that I eventually sold so I could buy a 4080 because I'd simply gotten fed up with the instability with the drivers, and constant crashes.

I truly believe the only thing holding them back in gaming is their poor software.

3

u/tapo 4d ago

Valve is porting their RADV open source AMD driver to Windows, so there is hope.

9

u/kikimaru024 4d ago

AMD exists to make a profit.

They won't lower the prices of their consumer GPUs when faced with rising costs on their own end.

7

u/gamas 4d ago

At the moment they don't need to. You can get a 9070 XT for $600-$700 whilst the 5070 Ti is going for $1400.

2

u/Nacroma 4d ago

I mean, they did outplay Intel in the CPU department by heavily leaning into gaming processors. Maybe they do know.

1

u/Bierculles 4d ago

AMD will once again fumble the ball like they always do

1

u/Soprelos 4d ago

Why would allocating resources to a lower margin market be sensible for AMD?

4

u/DoorHingesKill 4d ago

AMD's data center revenue is like twice as big as Nvidia's highest ever gaming revenue (including Nvidia's 24 consecutive years of dominating consumer GPUs), yet you'll find these people on Reddit telling you AMD is sleeping through some crazy opportunity, lmao.

"Just ditch AI, think of all the money you could print selling low margin GPUs to gamers!!!"

2

u/SukiPhoenix 4d ago

These people are so funny, AI is the best way for these companies to make money they don't give a fuck about gamers lol.

1

u/teremaster 4d ago

The problem is that the rest of Nvidias line is still in production. The market segment of the 5090 isn't open for AMD, because they've never been able to compete at that level anyway.

-1

u/Jwagner0850 4d ago

They're working together brother. That's why
