Man, I bought one last year before prices went crazy and now it's basically an investment/collector's item. I gotta take damn good care of this thing now. Honestly should probably add my PC to my home insurance policy. Sounds insane, but it would cost more to replace than almost every other appliance if there was some kind of disaster.

I damaged my 4090 moving my computer and was luckily able to get it replaced with a 5090 through insurance… the value of the 4090 was 11,000 Aud. I bought it for around 3k when they came out.

Good to hear a success story. That is my main concern since I bought my 5090 when it was still $3000, I'd be worried about insurance saying "that's what it worth" when it's going for $7000+ now.

Then again, I don't know if insurance companies in Australia are as evil as they are here in the States. Glad you got your replacement!

3k is insane, but 11k!? The Australia tax is surely an extra factor as we always get stung with higher prices as-is...

Good thing I'm happy with my 3070 and 2k monitor!

Yeh it was shocking when I checked. I was not expecting the 4090 to have actually gone up in value. Very strange stuff but completely makes sense with the ram shortages etc.

Also in Aus here. Worried about the same thing. Do you mind telling me which insurance product you bought specifically for this?

Budget home insurance. They are pretty good. They helped me get it sorted. Because they stopped making them and the cost of the 4090 was so high I suggested replacing it with a 5090 and they agreed. Not bad.

Thanks! As in Budget Direct?

On a side note, used to love watching your videos ages ago! Pretty sure me and some mates bumped into you on rust and then you introduced us to your channel and watched a heap when youtube was in my daily routine :)

Anything of any significant value should be on your home insurance.

You would never make a claim on that though. You'd end up spending way, way more on insurance vs just replacing a video card.

I'm thinking along the lines of if everything gets destroyed in a fire, rather than claiming for just a computer.

I should also add my computer to my house insurance policy. Thanks for the idea.

Definitely not an investment (collector item is up to you). No GPU has or will hold its value over the long or even medium term, unless we’re talking about the end of history of technology (which means we have far bigger worries than GPUs). Short term you could make some money if you sold it though, sure.

The investment comment was meant in jest, I have no intent of selling it since I'm actively using it.

No I figured, I was just being pedantic. I’m on a 4070 super, so not even in the same universe lol

Some retro GPU’s already cost more than what they were new. Buying them now could be an investment as they continue to rise.

True, but it’s a very small number of the old dedicated cards, and it’s a niche market. I guess I should rephrase then that GPUs are a very poor investment.

If the 5090 is the last high end consumer GPU for the next 3 or 4 years, it can easily continue to increase astronomically in price. Especially as local models continue to improve

I doubt it'll be that long, but for the next 1-2 years yes, it very well could, but that's why I said in the short erm you could make some money.
