Question For Genx What is your bedtime?

Gen X here, in our 50's, adult children grown and flown, my husband and I have found our bedtime routine keeps getting earlier and earlier. I mean, we make an excuse and say it's just because we want to watch our series on TV, but honestly its not unusual to be in pajamas, in bed at 8pm, then asleep by 9:30pm. What happened? There was a time we wouldn't even get into bed until 10:30 or 11:00. Are we now officially old? Geesh, how early will bedtime get by the time we're 80?

I really want to be in bed by 9 or 930 now. It just feels so much better

u/I_Make_It_Awkward_ 2d ago

I’m 50 and my husband and I watch shows from 7-9 then he goes to bed and I play video games until 11pm. I can’t lay down and go to bed early I’m too hyper of a person.

u/Mindless-Editor-4809 2d ago

I’m in bed by 7 . It’s my me time. Doesn’t mean I’m sleeping though.

1

u/bedtime-browser 2d ago

Exactly. My bed is comfortable. Tv, book, music, dog, husband. All my fav things

u/VirtualOldGuy 2d ago

Ideally, bedtime would be 9:30pm at the latest, reality is 11pm-midnight bedtime and up between 6-6:30am, because life just won't allow for anything else. There aren't enough hours in the damned day.

My partner and I are retiring this coming February, maybe that'll change things.

I don't understand the lamenting going to bed earlier. People talk about it like it's some kind of personality flaw or something. I stayed up all night in my 20s because my body could take it, and I had a hell of a social life. That was 30 years ago, and I'm not that person anymore, and not interested in the same things anymore. I don't see the problem with getting more sleep.

I work a Panama style 12 hr rotation, so I get up for work at 4:30a to get dressed and out the door to be there at, and checked on duty, at 6:00a. I don't get off work until 6p. Usually home at about 6:45 - 7p.

My ass tries really had to be in bed and on my way to asleep by 9:30-10p at the latest. Might stay up until 11p on a day off w/o with the next day to watch a little TV with, or get frisky with, the wife...

Two pre-teens (late start on kids) who think it's entirely unfair to go to bed at 9p, but they get up at 6:30, have to be at school NLT 7:30, and have a hard time getting moving in the morning. School is 1.5 miles away, so short drive.

Edit: At 50 I usually survive just fine on 7-ish hrs of sleep just fine due to a raging case of ADHD. Today? Zin, Bang, and misanthropic disdain. Just had my quarterly epidural shot of dexamethasone into my L5 on Thursday. Two nights of insomnia and hiccups. Night before last I got to sleep around 10 and woke up at 2:30am.

Last night I managed to a "solid" six hours of sleep. I feel like I've been beaten with a hangover stick and simultaneously still ready to crawl the walls and ceiling.

Love the fact my back feels better, hate the quarterly 2-3 days of 'roid rage.

I have to be to work at 6:00 AM. I’m in bed by 8:00 PM.

I'm 59. I usually get into bed at 8 pm and read for about an hour. I'm usually asleep by 9 pm 🤪

1

u/Mysterious-Fig-8972 3d ago

Usually around midnight, but if I'm into a good book it could be 3am

3

u/myblackandwhitecat 3d ago

I go to bed usually between 11 and 11-30. Am in my sixties.

4

u/sdinvest 3d ago

In bed usually around 1130 and sleep around 1230. Wake up around 630/700am.

3

u/kittyshakedown 3d ago

I still have teens at home. I would like to go to bed at like, 7:00.

But 10:15, in my bed, not getting up again, sleep mask on, cold room is non negotiable. If my sleep is iff, even for one night, i feel like I’m recovering from a bender fir a few days.

If I’m out in the evening i get super cranky by 8:00. It seems unnatural, unnecessary and dangerous.

I have no idea how I did it all with so little sleep just 10-12 years ago.

2

u/OkieJinjerSnap 3d ago

Remember when we would go out at 10:00 ? It’s takes me longer to get ready for bed due to all the hair and skin products. I start at 8:00pm.

3

u/Ok_Economics_5292 3d ago

Same here for my husband and I. I want th be in bed at 8 but struggle and extra hour to feel less old...we're in bed by 9 usually. I have insomnia menopause though so the 3am wide awake thing is driving me insane.

4

u/Patient_Philosophy_1 3d ago

I'm retired so I don't have a set bedtime. It is currently 3:53am and I am still awake. I can't remember when I have been to sleep before midnight unless I was ill or took a sleeping pill.

2

u/NoticerEnthusiast 3d ago

Same

1

u/Patient_Philosophy_1 3d ago

Still woke, haven't been to bed yet. Insomnia SUX.

We try to be in bed by 10. If we are in bed by 9:30, we are really impressed with ourselves. 😂

1 AM ... unless my wife and i are ya know ... feeling a certain way.

1

u/MattFoley00 3d ago

I’m a moon goon so I get to bed around 4 in the morning. When I’m on vacation it’s typically 9pm.

2

u/ProfessionalEven296 4d ago

If it wasn’t for having to lock the chickens up, I’d be in bed by 7:30 each night. Darned Velociraptors keep me up til 9!

1

u/Character_Problem_93 4d ago

Im still a night owl but I have to go to bed by ten if Im going to be able to get up in the morning. It was sometimes 8:30 when I was still working.

5

u/Conscious_Dealer2706 4d ago

At 82, my father is up all night looking at Facebook reels and eating junk food. He's a 13 year old girl on summer vacation. I'm not sure what happened. Up until a year or so ago he was still calling it "The Facebook", and couldn't figure out how to read his text messages.

1

u/heysoundude 3d ago

I can relate to this - my 76yr old mamabear is on FB to follow the news, her girlfriends and their families/children, the grandbabies on the other side of the country, the cousins across the ocean…and politics. Good lord the politics and what she’s being fed by the media have stolen her critical thinking.

  1. I got to bed at 7 so I am up and working at 5 am.

3

u/CharlesOnStage 4d ago

I’m usually in bed by 9 but I may read for a little before I go to sleep. I’m also up by about 6:30 because of the light in the room at that time. I used to stay up until all hours of the morning. That life is gone, I think.

2

u/MusicSavesSouls 1971 4d ago

I work nights and go to sleep at around 9:00 AM and wake up at 4:00 PM. So, if I didn't work nights, I would likely be in bed by 9:00 PM. Yep, we are getting old.

1

u/DueLoan685 4d ago

Well it's 4:14 am here. I hope to go to sleep around midnight every night. Never works.

2

u/CplSlicks 4d ago

Yeah, I'm in bed about 7 or 8pm, asleep between 9:30 and 10:30. But waking up a half hour after the bars close to be at work at 5am is really tough otherwise.

1

u/No_Struggle3220 4d ago

I'm in my late 40's and partner is in his late 30's. I'm a caretaker and I'm not done with that till after 10 each night so then it's time for partner and I to watch TV and relax. He's usually asleep around midnight and it's 2 for me. I have Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, though.

1

u/Helpful-Squirrel9509 4d ago

He will be your caretaker for a good 10 years. How do I find a milf 10 years older than me?

1

u/No_Struggle3220 4d ago

Who says I'm a MILF? LOL. Motherhood wasn't kind to my body. And my partner has medical concerns of his own, we take care of each other.

1

u/Helpful-Squirrel9509 3d ago

Lol, thanks for the reply. And I wish you the best. You and your partner are soldiers. Keep on keeping on. I bow to you 🙇 😊

u/mc_homeroom 4d ago

Age 51, lights out between 10 and 11 pm, up between 6 and 7 am. I've definitely transitioned from the night owl I was most of my teen/adult life to a morning lark and I'm kind of delighted with that, actually. Mornings are nice, turns out! I like waking up with energy and a sense of purpose, but I could definitely do without the evening exhaustion.

2

u/whormongr 4d ago

I usually fall asleep a little after 1am and wake up around 6am

6

Age 51. Getting in bed around 8:30, usually asleep by 9 and still can’t seem to wake up at 5:45. Multiple snoozes required. Can’t wait to retire someday.

6

u/Ineffable7980x 5d ago

61 yo. I am usually in bed by 9:30 and asleep by 10.

This is totally fine with me because about 5 years ago my body decided it was going to wake up at 5 am every day.

2

u/Few_Scientist5381 5d ago

Mid fifties, in bed by 11:00pm, up about 8:00am

3

u/Admirable-Aside-5013 5d ago

Don't worry about when you're in your 80s, it's called nap time 🥱

3

u/_danigirl 5d ago

55 & 58, in bed by 1130, lights out by 1230. Sleep till 800-900. Tried to go to bed by 1000 for a month, and lights out by 1100, it failed.

3

u/IrregularTeam 5d ago

51 here, in bed daily between 1-2am. Sleep immediately. Up for gym/ work 6-7am. Weekend no bedtime, usually skip sleeping one day due to EDM/ rave party or close down our local bar … loving life

4

u/jenwenfen 5d ago

So, 4 to 5 hours of sleep/day, every day? How long has this been your pattern?

2

u/IrregularTeam 4d ago

Sleep pattern is the same since I was a little kid gratefully

1

u/Ocotollotillie 5d ago

Mid 60s - in bed by 8 and up at 4 am. I wish I could stay up later like a big kid.

4

u/Flashy_Ad_2310 5d ago

55yo. 9 or 930 pm. Out like someone turned off a switch. Up at 4 or 430 am. Coffee, gym, work. Or coffee, work, gym depending on work shift that week. Spouse is a night owl. She has a totally different schedule! And who cares what others do? What works for you, works for you!

1

u/seagullsondeck 5d ago

Ha zzzzzzzzz. I’m 79. Beddy byes 3 bacardis. Early supper, ???? Don’t care. Off to bed. 5 pm some days.

3

u/-Crazy_Plant_Lady- 5d ago

I prefer the quiet and solo time I get at night. I go to sleep usually 4-6am and wake up at 1-2pm. Sometimes if I’m really tired I’ll go to bed earlier but I don’t like getting up before 12. The morning is full of people who are in a hurry and it is loud and bright. All things I dislike lol. At night, it is quiet and dark and no one bothers me.

1

u/IrregularTeam 5d ago

I love this. Love your body clock. And night people know what you’re talking about

1

u/ravenouskit 5d ago

I cannot wait to have a similar routine. I fucking hate mornings

1

u/SultansOfVinyl 5d ago

Weekdays between 9pm and 10pm. I get up at 4:30am. The weekends usually around 11:30pm and I wake up whenever I feel rested.

Everynight I take all my meds, including nerve pain medication. The nerve pain medication makes me sleepy. Also take half a gummy, and on the weekends I use more.

1

u/guineapickle 5d ago

Mid 50s with 2 teenagers. I'm in bed by 11and I read a book or get sucked into social media, then around midnight my kids become chatty so I put a guest chair in my bedroom for them. They're in bed by 1, then chronic pain, insomnia, worry for our future and more book reading keep me up until 2 or 3. Incredible spouse gets up with the kids so on a good day I sleep until 9:30 when he brings me coffee. On a bad day pain keeps me up until dawn.

1

u/Monstrissimo Older Than Dirt 5d ago

60 and mine is usually sometime between 2 am and 5 am. Time spent asleep depends. I have chronic pain and insomnia which means I might sleep a full 8 or it might be 4 hours.

2

u/Wyldfyre1 5d ago

Up right now it's 11:23 that's my usual. Be asleep by midnight probably. Up around 7 or 7:30

3

u/KoleBigEars Bicentennial Baby 5d ago

50yo, in bed at 12am, usually going to sleep around 1am, and up at 7:30am.

2

u/Medium-Special-1411 5d ago

I feel like it is an hour earlier per decade for me. 20’s 2 or 3 am sometimes. About 50/50, 30’s 12-1am, 40’s 10-11 pm, 50’s 9-10 pm (although my HRT needs work so here I am at 11 pm) and my husband is 60’s and he is 8-9 pm sometimes I figure I will end up at around 7 pm in my 70’s and 6 pm in my 80’s. I am okay with it. I prefer morning anyway.

2

u/Spiritual-Fruit8348 5d ago

11 pm and wake up around 6-6:30 . The earliest I go to bed is 10 pm

1

u/AuraGlow22 5d ago

Probably normal. My inlaws (early 80’s go to bed between around 6pm lol

5

u/Nephilimn13 5d ago

Retired at 55 last year. Between and 1 and 2:30an, up around 8 to 930 am, sometimes later. No clock is a great way to live!

0

u/GoinMinoan 5d ago

as a fellow daylark (*not* a nightowl), I go to bed by 8.30 so I can wake up at 5am for work.

7

u/MDEnce 5d ago

Wtf? 🤯

I try to be in bed by 12:00am, and am lucky to be asleep by 1-1:30. I'll wake up ~ : 45 later, and again about 3:30-4:00.

Sometimes I wish I could go to bed earlier, but I've always been a night owl and can't do it even when I try.

c'est la vie.

1

u/PetuniaPacer 5d ago

In bed usually by 10, might read another hour. Honestly this is pretty similar to how I’ve been my whole life. Sometimes a little earlier but usually not much later

1

u/Zealousideal-Lie7255 5d ago

I’m 57 and I go to bed at 11pm on weeknights and around 12:30am on weekends. I almost always fall asleep within 30 minutes of getting in bed.

5

u/1leftbehind19 5d ago

Up until 2-3 AM and get up at 630 on work days, and make it up on my days off. I’m pushing 49 and that’s getting harder to pull off though.

1

u/TheVelveteenCapybara 5d ago

It's not much easier at 56 lol!

2

u/Scared-Middle-7923 5d ago

Can I suggest HRT or magnesium glycinate or both — was experiencing this and save my sleep

1

u/PumpkinBeautiful4345 5d ago

The same schedule here

3

u/Kingbus155 5d ago

Was between 2 am and 4 am but would get up by 9 am for decades. Started Zepbound 15 weeks ago and now can’t stay awake past 10. Who knew good sleep was a side effect. But, I’ll take it.

4

u/bethiec1976 5d ago

I’m 50 and am falling asleep by 9:30pm and have to get up by 5:15am each day. Yawn.

2

u/freakythrowaway79 5d ago

🤣 I'm in bed by 6pm sometimes earlier BUT I also get up at 245am. 4am-12pm schedule.

3

u/rivenshire 1972 5d ago

I aim for 10/11, but 11:30/12:30 in reality. Still determined to turn from night owl to early bird, and aging seems to help with that if you let it. I want more reading time before I get sleepy and more creative time in the day before I get tired.

Not drinking much liquid after dinner helps with sleeping longer stretches, as does taking magnesium glycinate and not drinking caffeine or alcohol at night (or much at all).

1

u/Mysterious-Taste-804 5d ago

Asleep by 8 - but we get up at 3:30.

2

u/rivenshire 1972 5d ago

That's a bit too early for me. We also still have young adult kids who live with us all or part of the time, and the late night talks are important. Ideally, I'd like rise with the sun. I love light.

4

u/bluewarbler9 5d ago

Mid-50s. We’re seldom in bed before 11:30 and after midnight is common.

3

u/DisastrousWalrus9527 5d ago

I go to bed around 9 and I am asleep in minutes. But then I wake up hourly to pee.

2

u/SignalSleep8979 5d ago

Mines about the same time with the hubs and yes it got earlier and earlier all the time. Can totally relate to this

3

u/lazyloofah 5d ago

We get up between 4 and 4:30, so early to bed it is! One of us is usually down before 8, and the other really should be and often passes out on the sofa. LOL

2

u/Brilliant-Option-526 5d ago

You will eventually wake up yesterday.

I wish I could fall asleep so early.

The wife gets up at 5AM. And I don’t generally fall
Asleep until 10:30-11PM. So I’m not getting my 8 hours in.

2

u/Blue_Falcon1594 6d ago

8pm, but I often wake up at 4am.

3

u/NaughtyLittleDogs 6d ago

Just be grateful you can sleep. My lifelong insomnia got 100% worse after menopause. These days, if I'm asleep before midnight (even after taking a sleeping pill) it's a miracle. And my husband is nodding off on the couch by 8:30. So that's fun...

7

u/OilComprehensive6237 6d ago

I'm in bed by 2AM.

2

u/obievil 6d ago

I've never been able to sleep well or consistently. However the closer I get to 50 the more tired I get earlier in the night. I often don't go to bed before 12:00 but over the last couple of months I'm finding myself tired enough to sleep earlier. I went from average of 5 hours of sleep to 7

3

u/couchcaptain 6d ago

For me, it doesn't even matter what time I go to sleep anymore. I'm awake around 4-4:30 am and no I don't want to.

2

u/Cute_Bug_808 6d ago

Yes that’s me !

2

u/shwh1963 6d ago

In our 60s. Bedtime is 10:30-11:00 and asleep by midnight. Wake up around 8

3

u/Grand_Lie3286 6d ago

We’re in our 50s too - bed is normally 10, and I’m up by 6 in the week, 7 at the weekends.
Afternoon/lunchtime naps tend to happen too
I’d say just listen to your bodies & go with the flow

2

u/hakedy 4d ago

The afternoon naps are becoming more common, only on the weekends though. Might doze off around 8pm for 20min during the week.

1

u/TOXicOx18951 6d ago

I’m 60, wife is 64. She works 2nd shift and gets home around 1am. We’re in bed by 2, but I’m usually up by 8. She sleeps to around 10.

2

u/redhotbeads 6d ago

60F, and I’m an early bird. In bed by 10, asleep by 11 after I read, up at 6:30 for work or 7 if the dogs let me sleep in, every day of the week. Works pretty well for me. I used to really love a good nap, but not so much lately.

1

u/fabunobo 6d ago

No shame in the 8 o'clock bedtime! Usually I read for an hour or so before I go to sleep.

2

u/DaveTheYguy 6d ago

Wife and I are in our early 60s. Both retired, so whenever we want, but generally in bed by 8:30, asleep by 10:00, up at 6:30. Rinse & repeat daily.

3

u/Sanitordkb92 6d ago

I have no set time of going to bed or getting up. I'm 52 and on permanent disabilty due to having stage 4 rectal cancer. I'll often take a couple of naps during the day as well. Chemo and radiation have contributed to my unusual sleep times. My whole life I've been a night owl. There's something about the quiet of the night I enjoy. If I'm up super early it's generally because some pain has woken me. Either that or I haven't gone to bed yet. I do a great deal of walking and physical exercise which tires me out for those frequent naps. Routine is my enemy anyway.

2

u/Cute_Bug_808 6d ago

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through that. I wish you the best.

3

u/Sanitordkb92 5d ago

I really appreciate you saying so. What a very kind, thoughtful thing to say. Thank you. I wish you the best as well.

3

I go to bed by nine and I’m up by five. It works for me! 56F

8

No, I'm going in the other direction, staying up later and later. I don't fall asleep most nights until 4am lately. But I've always been a night owl.

5

Same, 4 or 5 am. Ive always been a night owl as well.

2

I have a long window of when I can go to bed, but I cannot wake up earlier than 5:30 in the morning anymore. No matter how important it is I cannot get out of bed before 5:30. It’s like my body doesn’t work.

2

u/pandorumriver24 6d ago

I wish I had that problem. I can’t sleep past 4:30 even on the weekends. It’s making me go to bed at like 8:30/9 or else I’m dragging ass all day.

74 here and have always been a night owl. Bed between 12-2am up at 9am. Perfectly fits my routine. I struggle through the day if I have to get up earlier. The last time I was awake at 5am was because I stayed up through the night before.

Same here. Have known to be in bed by 6:30pm in winter and asleep at 7pm. Am up for work either 4am or 5am depending on work. I love an early night - showered and relaxed in bed is great for our mental health!

3

I felt a bit weird about going to bed before about 8 but now I just go when I’m tired. Last night that was 7pm. I do try to wait until dark at least

2

Sounds like you're winning. What happened is that the definition of "winning" changed.

I work in a nursing home and some people go to bed at 6:30

6

u/PeacePufferPipe 6d ago

Wife and I are 60. I have to awaken at 430 am for work and she gets up with me to help and spend time because she truly loves me. We are also lifelong lifters and exercise enthusiasts and have a 2x per week decently brutal workout in the home gym. We watch very little TV and are Orthodox, so that means we are up early on the weekends too. So bed time for us is usually 830 pm.

u/AutomaticStory7440 6d ago

We in the bed rn as I read this! 🤣🤣🤣 it's 6:27 pm est

1

u/DifficultJellyfish 6d ago

Same! My husband (71) and I (60) go to bed around 6:30, up at 4. Same hours we kept when we were working for 30+ years so really hard to change habits.

2

u/MichPM 6d ago

Same! 😂

2

u/demonofhersoul 6d ago

34 and I'm in my pyjamas and in bed by 7.30/8pm most nights 🤣 Doomscrolling usually keeps me up until 11/12ish though. Not good! It's a habit I need to kick lol

2

u/juleeff 6d ago

I got to bed between 9:30-10. But I always have, even in high school and college unless there was a specific event. I get up at 5:30am. Same as when I was in high school and college.

2

u/Hogwarts_Grad_1 6d ago

59 and we go to bed around 11pm. When we try going to bed before 10:30, we end up not being able to fall asleep until well after 11 anyway. (Edit to add that I don’t nap at all.)

2

u/Unfit-ForDuty1101 6d ago

57 and anywhere from 10 pm to 1 am. We nap though

2

u/d3amoncat 6d ago

I take meds that knock me out so I go to bed about 1/2 hr after I take them

3

u/mike57porter 6d ago

I just go to bed when im tired. Which is issually between 9 and 10. 69 years old.

2

u/ayjaytay22 6d ago

I’m 50 and 9:30 is a glorious time to hit the hay

2

u/Ill_Cauliflower5348 6d ago

52F and my Apple Watch says my average bedtime is 10:59 pm. This is down from the 2:32 am average over the summer. I have to be at work at 7:30 during the school year so I need to sleep earlier to function.

u/AnotherBaldWhiteDude Huckle Buckle Beanstalk 6d ago

10pm on a school night

1

u/OutrageousCode2172 6d ago

From 8:30 until midnight

3

u/Signal_Reporter628 6d ago

56m, for most of my adult life avg was 2-3am (night owl) and up at 7am. More recently midnight at the latest as I have to be up at 6am for work after changing jobs. In my advanced age, I'm finding where I used to function well on 4-5 hours of sleep, I now need an almost solid 5.5-6. Otherwise I don't stay awake past 9pm if I stop moving which irritates the hell out of me.

1

u/Lab214 7d ago

56 here. I’m usually try to be asleep by 11 pm. If I’m really busy at work and get tired I can be knocked out by 9:30 pm. I don’t like going anywhere late on Sundays either and try to be home by 5 pm. Family sometimes will schedule get togethers on Sundays and I’m really not digging it as my older siblings are retired and ding ding don’t have to work the next day .

u/Dl3191 7d ago

55, I say I’m going to be in bed by 8:30. Usually don’t get to sleep until 9:30ish. Never set an alarm but I wake up about 3 to 3:15. So I get up about 3:45 and head to the gym. Pretty comfortable with my routine…

2

u/kittycat_34 7d ago

I'm 54,husband is 55. 10pm is our bedtime 7 days a week.

1

u/eddane1 7d ago

54, try to be asleep by 11, alarm at 5:15 on weedays. I am so not a morning person, though.

Before I had to return to the office after mostly teleworking for 20 years, I would normally sleep from 1am until 8.

1

u/HeartImpressive7964 7d ago

46-I go into bed for the night at 8 every night with a snack. Watch a little easy tv like the office or the middle and asleep by 830pm.

Retired, so bedtime is anytime… 😎🌴

3

u/Greeks_bearing_gifts 7d ago

48M here. Im typically asleep by 830pm. Up by 4 to 5am. Can't say its always good sleep, as that is up and down now. But No alcohol, and I love my 3 cups of coffee every morning. Wife wakes up about 90 min later, and brings the doggies with her. Love my quiet mornings.

5

u/BoroBlonde 7d ago

Usually in bed by 8 anymore, in the summer I can't wait for the time change when I can get into the bed even earlier. I think I'm recovering from all that sleep I missed from 18 to 25 when I'd dance all night and then go to class or work, and again from 30 to 35 when dealing with young children.

5

u/ProfessionalCamp9077 7d ago

GenX here, i can’t stay up passed 9:30pm-10:00pm. Wake up on work days at 6am, but on weekends sometimes i sleep in until 7:30-8.

4

u/FloorCultural3310 7d ago

Night owl (58M) here. Usually heading to bed by about 02:00. Wife heads to bed about 22:30.

2

u/Hotspiceteahoneybee 7d ago

I’m with you. My husband is asleep by 10:30 or 11:00. Some nights I go with him and lay awake on my phone, sometimes I stay in the living room, but I don’t go to sleep until around 2 a.m. either.

3

u/my_next_chapter 7d ago

55, brain puts me to sleep at 8:30-9:30, then gets it's a-hole on and wakes me between 4:39 and 5:30am

1

u/SharpnCrunchy 7d ago

We might be twins

4

u/dustandsmallrocks 7d ago

8:30 bedtime. 5am alarm during weekdays for work.

Of course, hubby and I both sleep in until 5:30am on weekends, lol

1

u/Big_Tie_8055 7d ago

I get up early in the morning for work and I go to bed around 8:00. I tend to go to bed when it gets dark this time of year. I’m also anemic so that may have something to do with being tired.

8

u/MrWoodChuck71 7d ago

55-year-old Gen Xer here, and as a truck driver, I’ve pretty much given up on the concept of a normal bedtime. 😂
Some nights I’m crawling into the sleeper at 7:30 or 8:00, and other nights I’m still wide awake at 11:00 wondering why the hell I thought starting another audiobook was a good idea.
My bedtime is basically determined by three things: how many miles I’ve driven, what time I have to get moving tomorrow, and whether my brain has decided we’re going to sleep or spend the next two hours contemplating some completely useless historical fact from 1978. 🤣
But I do find it hilarious that when we were teenagers, staying up until 2 a.m. was practically a badge of honor. Now, at 55, getting eight uninterrupted hours of sleep sounds like winning the damn lottery!
And here’s the really frightening part. Remember when our parents would fall asleep in their recliners watching television at 8:30, and we’d make fun of them?
Well, congratulations, Generation X. WE HAVE BECOME OUR PARENTS! 😂
At this rate, by the time we’re 80, we’ll be brushing our teeth immediately after the 4:30 early-bird dinner special and calling it a night before Wheel of Fortune comes on! 🤣

1

u/SharpnCrunchy 7d ago

I’m 56 and have been a late lunch special /early bird dinner fan for the last 5 years and hitting the sack by 8pm. My wife bemoans our lack of social life at night. I do make exceptions but have now realized I can only eat a small appetizer so late (or I’m too bloated to sleep) and everyone thinks I’m being weird.

1

u/stillarockstar1 7d ago

That was great!

4

u/gr8Jedi_Val 7d ago

This year (turned 55) hit different. Boyfriend (65) is still somewhat a night owl, but his bedtime went from 2am to 11pm this year. I've always been early to bed (9pm) type. This year is bumped up to 8pm, and we both wake up at 3am then go back to bed at 6am for a nap lol

3

u/thewatchwinder 7d ago

im 53. i havent had a bedtime in...well ..forever. i go to bed when im tired. sometimes its 1030, sometimes 11...generally, its between 1230-2 am i get up by 530-630 to take my dog out to pee and make coffee. i generally get between 3.5-5 hours a night. its how ive always been. never needed a lot of sleep. sometimes (half the time) ill crash by 11, wake up at 1, stay up till 5, nap till 730, start work for 830. my body REALLY likes the split sleep. its something i do naturally. like taking a couple/couple hour naps a day. really works for me.

1

u/EBweB76 7d ago

12:30am for me… carefully discovered the ideal bedtime for me with help from my sleep therapist.
No being in bed more than 7 minutes god falling asleep (and not more than 9 minutes awake in the morning at 8:15am.

1

u/Valuable_Jicama8553 7d ago

In bed by 8. Alarm clock goes off at 4:10 for work. For the last 27yrs..

1

u/somethingforbec 7d ago

When I’m alone, I go to bed around 9:30-10 and am asleep by 10:30. I don’t always sleep well and am tired by early evening.

When I’m with my guy, we go to bed any time from 8-11 and are awake til after midnight having fun times. I’m never too tired for that 😂

u/JEG1980s 1980 baby rejected by GenXers and Millennials 7d ago

My wife (47f) likes to be IN bed by 8. I (46m) vary, if I’ve had a long day and am tired it’s not unheard of for me to go to bed before 10 these days, which never happened before a couple of years ago. But on average, according to Apple Health, my average bedtime is 10:55. I used to be quite a night owl, but I have been prioritizing my sleep more the last few years. The problem is if I go to bed too early I just get up super early. For instance I fell asleep at 9:50 last night, so I was awake by 4:17… on vacation!

7

u/Abstrata ☢️ 7d ago

I’m still a night owl of the highest degree

2

u/East_Vivian 1973 7d ago

My husband and I love to stay up late. We keep saying we are going to get more sleep and go to bed earlier but we just don’t want to! If we try really hard we can get to bed by 11, but usually it’s more like 12. I’m currently writing this in bed at 1:15 am.

5

u/Agitated-Brick-8026 7d ago

Gen x. 57. It ranges but usually between 11pm and 1am. Sometimes 10ish but thats rare. Alarm is always set for 6am, but usually up at 530. And usually fully awake and rested

1

u/flyinb11 7d ago

Between 8 and 9:30 at the latest. I'm up between 3 to 4am and get to the gym by 5am though to start my day.

4

u/Curious_Kat4 7d ago

Gen X and it’s 2:13am right now. I usually go to bed around 12 and get up at 7:30 or 9 am depending on my work schedule. Would happily stay up til 2am all the time if I could. Lifelong night owl.
