Media The French protests are no longer about schools or the cost of living
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The protesters are saying it's about the cost of living and schools, but this is just looting and vandalism. The poor woman is pleading for them to stop and they just ignore her. This will fix nothing.
•
u/Crimson_Boomerang 10h ago
Parasites pretending to be protesters. Always there at every protest. Good causes get smeared by people like this. And I'm sure some of them are also desperate from the cost of living but that's no excuse to steal from small businesses.
•
u/EgoistHedonist 10h ago
And there is also a reason why mostly these few specific videos are in heavy circulation. They are used as a scapegoat to invalidate the actual reasons for the protests. US especially has strong reasons to make their citizens believe that protesting will not work and people that are doing it are bad.
•
u/lord_hyumungus 10h ago
Maybe they wouldn’t have to protest if all the rich oligarchs and billionaires weren’t hoarding the wealth
→ More replies (49)•
u/Crimson_Boomerang 10h ago
Exactly. I believe a decent amount of these are people doing this with malice, using a technique called "anchoring" that makes you associate the protests with looters.
•
u/EgoistHedonist 10h ago
I agree. And the faster you can spread the content at start, the better. Usually the first take wins and is considered as truth and later corrections and debunks are mostly ignored
•
u/General_Lie 1h ago
If you are a protester in a crowd and poeople start looting and vandaliaing. You are not in the crowd of protesters but in the crowd of looters and vandals ...
•
u/ImmigrationJourney2 1999 10h ago
The reason is that many French people are fed up with this. Every time the big protests are announced, we know that disgusting behaviors like this will happen, and it keeps getting worse. Had to tell my grandparents to stay barricaded in the house the whole day, it’s just too dangerous.
They burned down a historical building, a priceless piece of our patrimony. They looted countless shops and brutalized innocent civilians. Hard to stand behind the cause, when every single one of these massive protests ends up in fire.
•
•
u/Pass_The_Salt_ 9h ago
Honestly delusional take. I have seen many many different videos of these “protests”. Its not like a one off thing that keeps circulating. In all these videos there are piles of trash all over, evidence its been happening for a while. Have also seen videos of people driving around and there are several bus stops completed destroyed.
If they don’t want the reason for their protests to be invalidated then the protestors need to stop associating with these losers that trash and loot at every opportunity.
If no one holds them accountable then they will continue to taint every cause.
•
u/Ok_Cockroach8063 3h ago
“If you ignore all the looting, school burning, town hall burning etc the protests are mostly peaceful” 🤡

He did. That's a big part of the reason those people attacked him. Of course, the anti-rittenhouse people try to ignore that part.

The biggest issue is more inflaming the situation with a rifle.
•
u/khmergodzeus 10h ago
he was just holding it. he got attacked by pedophiles who got wrecked and killed.
•
u/TheMadMunchkinATL 10h ago
I’m a Democrat as are most of my friends and relatives, and the discourse around Rittenhosue was insane.
I remember getting into an argument with my dad about it, and he said “this kid went to a protest with a rifle and shot peaceful protesters” and I was just blown away that the articles he’d read had left him with that impression.
I showed him the video and he was stunned seeing this goofy little fat kid being friendly to everyone and just trying to put out a flaming dumpster get attacked, only shoot the people attacking him, then disengage and flee as soon as he could. And I had that same interaction with multiple friends
•
u/trafficnab 1996 8h ago
In my opinion the only person really guilty of a crime that night was the first guy who attacked Rittenhouse, tried to grab the rifle, and (understandably) got shot for it
From that moment on, Rittenhouse was defending his life from an encroaching crowd of people while attempting to retreat, and everyone else was under the impression that they were stopping an active shooter
They're all idiots, no doubt, but I wouldn't categorize their actions as criminal, two people can, in the moment, both believe they are acting in self defense
•
u/ChadWestPaints 7h ago
I absolutely would categorize their actions as criminal. Genuine belief isnt sufficient - *reasonable" belief is. And if you look at the info available to Huber and Grosskreutz, what they did was completely unreasonable. They essentially heard a mob rumor about a potential shooting and on that basis alone chased down and attempted to assault and/or murder a fleeing child who, as far as they saw, wasnt hurting or threatening anyone.

He crossed state lines with an assault rifle as a minor and killed two people injuring a third. Then he fake cried about it at the trial like a man.
•
u/thomasrat1 9h ago
He was a minor, crossing state lines is a nothing deal, it was like 30 mins from his house, he got attacked by 3 people, and yeah he probably fake cried at trial.
Guys an idiot, but he was never going to get charged
•
u/WestStatistician2936 6h ago
He didn't cross state lines with a rifle. He crossed state lines and then a buddy gave him a rifle.

u/iama_bad_person 5h ago
He crossed state lines with an assault rifle
Congrats, you have shown everyone you don't know a single fact about this case, because he didn't actually cross state lines with an assault rifle, or any rifle at all, hell it's like the first thing you learn if you actually do some research.
•
•
u/casinocooler 8h ago
You must not be familiar with the area. If you have ever lived in an area that spanned a state border you would understand.
•
u/Either-Medicine9217 2002 8h ago edited 6h ago
Man. You can just tell you have no clue what you're talking about.
First off, Rittenhouse didn't cross state lines with a rifle. The rifle was at a friend of his. Who was already in Wisconsin. Meaning as soon as you started typing you were already wrong. You would know this if you had bothered to look into the trial rather than just running your mouth.
Second, he was at the protest doing things like putting out fires. The people you're more concerned were convicted pedos and felons setting those fires. Real interesting how hard you're identifying with them. But I guess you know, if it's a Republican minor you don't care if a pedo tries to touch him. Real big insight on your character.
And yeah he killed them. See, when you try to assault somebody who's got a gun and they put a hole in you; that's legal. Maybe that's a lesson all the violent people who want to beat somebody because they don't let them set things on fire need to learn. If they hadn't assaulted him their corpses wouldn't be in the ground right now. And I bet it burns you up real bad that actions have consequences.
Edit: If this response makes you mad and downvote; Good. Stay mad. Doesn't change those people are rotting, and Rittenhouse was pronounced innocent.

He drove 30 minutes north to meet a friend who owned a rifle. He walked around with it before being attacked by a child molester for no apparent reason. He was then chased by a mob and shot only those who attacked him.

Here's a clue. If you want to stop black people from being angry about police killing black people, maybe get the police to kill fewer black people.
But you'd rather focus on people angry about cops having effective immunity from murder charges then the cops committing murders and getting away with it.
Cue the regurgitated Fox News Russian bot bullshit about how every petty crime deserves a death sentence. Except when you do them though, right? Because you're special for some reason that definitely has nothing to do with the color of your skin.

Same thing happened here in Northern Ireland with the race riots, this year, last year and the year before. It was basically an outlet for loyalists to get young people to riot.
Although I don’t think the race riots we had are comparable to what is going on in France right now tbh as the reason they happened here was much different. But they were hijacked by fools just like what’s happening France.

What irks me is that the so called “good protestors” don’t stand up or say shit, allowing this kind of behavior to spread. What’s the idea then, try to have your own protests while someone else takes advantage of it, ruins your image AND causes property damage for someone else..?
If you want to be respected the why not at least try to get organized?? Over the years various clips have surfaced where it’s only one person trying to stop the looters while no one else cares. Since they are supposedly are a small minority then why not stop them?? This kind of vandalism literally achieves nothing cause the politicians just don’t care cause they’re not affected, neither are the CEOs. But hey historical landmarks like that church mean nothing i guess•

•
u/SafeImpressive4413 9h ago
Also, during the French Revolution there was a constant looting of high end businesses (clothes specially suits, fine jewelry, watches, wallpapers, wine, books, paintings things made out of gold and silver…) and that didn’t mean the protest wasn’t successful or that its motives were getting off track.
•
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 7h ago
I’d very much argue that the French Revolution wasn’t successful. I don’t know why everyone loves using that one as an example, the Republic immediately fell apart, everyone got their heads cut off, and it resulted in the rise of an Emperor who then waged war against all of Europe
•
u/paulhack45 4h ago
All Europe waged war against France first, even before Napoleon came to power. And it has been successful long term in exporting illuministic and liberal ideals to all Europe and so leading to the second half of the 19th century revolutions
•
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 3h ago edited 3h ago
Sure, in some regard the rest of Europe forced France in that direction because the other monarchs were outraged by the execution of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, and because they saw opportunity in France’s destabilized state; but still, my point is the French Revolution is touted as the example for liberal democracies to follow, when in reality it was quite messy from the get go, and went off the rails pretty quickly. There were so many different factions that were infighting that none of them really had a solid hold on the Republic, which is what led to them turning back to despotism in the face of so much chaos. It’s really more an example of what not to do than what should be done. The beginning of the French Revolution is inspiring, I’ll say that, but the lesson learned should be that revolutions need clear leadership and a united front on what should happen afterwards. Also that it is very hard to maintain Liberal ideals in the face of conflict and instability, eventually people will turn to whoever they perceive as the stabilizer, no matter how they do it.
As far as influence goes, it’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation when it comes to France. The wider Enlightenment, much of which came from French thinkers, is what inspired the American Revolution, which the French supported, which then proved the concept of Republican Democracy without a monarch was achievable, which then influenced the French Revolution. So while I’d argue the American Revolution was the blueprint, the French had their hands all over that blueprint.

u/jake_burger Millennial 3h ago
So France isn’t a republic now?
•
u/flaming_burrito_ 2000 3h ago
Yes, they eventually got back to being a Republic, but you’re skipping over a lot of context. The 1st French Republic lasted for about a decade after the monarchy was taken out of power; mind you, the first couple of years was the Reign of Terror, where anyone suspected of being an “enemy of the Republic” was getting their head cut off, then the Directory for about 4 years, which was overthrown by Napoleon and other members of the directory to form the Consulate, which consolidated more and more power into Napoleon’s hands until he declared himself emperor. So even the brief life of that Republic was pretty fucked. Then France was an empire, then a monarchy again for several decades (though to be fair it was more a constitutional monarchy), then a Republic again for about 4 years, after which, quite hilariously, Napoleon’s nephew Napoleon III proclaimed himself emperor just like his Uncle did, then 3rd French Republic came about in 1870. So it took them 70 years, 3 kings, and 2 emperors to get back to being a Liberal Republic like they are now. I wouldn’t exactly call that a success
•
u/BakingAspen 10h ago
idk as an american when i compare the protest tactics of the french and americans and the response of the government in terms of actually giving protestors what they want, seems like riots work
•
u/CTRexPope 10h ago edited 10h ago
Indeed. Americans have been told over and over that protesting forcefully will get them nothing. And they have complied. They have given over the country to fascists and oligarchs.
Perhaps the French will fail. But at least they tried.
America gave up before they even tried. A man that attempted a violent coup against America is president. We are a failed state, and any American clutching pearls in response to the French are pretty pathetic in my view.

•
u/BakingAspen 9h ago
I can see your logic feels sound to you but in real life things work the opposite of the way you are describing. If you don’t like it then get on board with building direct democratic systems instead of republics

•
u/BakingAspen 9h ago
Yeah I didn’t say I like riots though I just said that they’re the only thing that works when you have a government hell-bent on conspiring with the rich to screw over the poor. All the damage done to those small shops should be blamed on the government and not the rioters because the government gave their people no other choice.
•
u/AntonioVivaldi7 1h ago
How would riots be stopped in a direct democracy?

u/BakingAspen 42m ago
In a republic the political class is necessarily bourgeois and will try to screw over ordinary people, leading to riots. In a direct democracy, ordinary people control policy and are less likely to screw themselves, so less riots.

The problem with these pillaging 'protesters,' with majorily a (Maghrebi-/)African immigrant and/or ultra-leftist background, is an inherent hate of white/capitalist/Christian/secular culture, a lack of a proper upbringing by their parents in terms of discipline, values and self-reflection. These youths consider themselves post-colonial entitled inheritors. Did we forget most of Africa was colonised by Arabs, disrupting the indigenous Berber and other tribal cultures? Not to mention the Palestinian flags who have no business whatsoever in a school protest. Why not the Sudanese flag, where we now have over 150 000 deaths? Because a Sudanese, or any other flag, can't be exploited to stir up aggression and social turmoil. They throw all sorts of discontents together as an incentive to cater to their own materialist gratifications. All these poor kids with black Under Armour gear, Nike-running shoes, and iPhones to film their 'frustrating' lives with... Why not read books and pick up a hobby in stead of hanging in the streets until late?
Rightist parties don't have to do anything. They don't have to look around to make their agenda come true: these youths are literally gefundenes Fressen. And if they get the power, a lot of these youths will ultimately get a better future in their emerging home land economies.

Hello, french here, this is not the protest about schools anymore this one ended and this video is from yesterday.
This is a more global one which is more about cost of living (as you said in the subtext)
While I think there's people taking advantage of what's happening (obviously, and there's nothing to defend) on the video they're not attacking a random store but a brand selling overpriced living items
Fun fact but you can even hear one of the protesters saying "oh there's even shampoo !", this is a little silly to say that this way, but I don't think you should be happy to find shampoo, this is basic health/cleaning items everyone should have and afford
Lastly for my rant, people never made the government change by doing pacific protests (and the police is still throwing gaz grenades and hits pacific protesters so in the end, who cares)

Those are "casseurs" (breakers) taking advantage of the situation, not true protesters who were also actually there in way larger numbers, peacefully. Signed: a French person

Like most protests, it started with simple demands about funding school and education. But students are not stupid, they know the lack of funding comes from end-stage capitalism and is linked to the awful cost of living, the ecological crisis, structural racism of society and that there are absolutely no perspectives as an adult in that kind of society. That's why students have been joined by farmers, teachers, syndicalists and revolutionaries and the movement is growing to tear down that world that offers no future.

Now there are less taxes to go towards schools as the state now needs to repair this destruction. Well done children. You’re right. You do need better education.

I will still support the complete solution of the problem of the cost of living and schools and I will not let the broader movement be delegitimised by the media focusing on the looters and destroyers.

Unfortunately we live in a world where vandalism of private property is about one of the most effective ways to get politicians to listen. I mean just look at the no kings protests, or the ice out protests, you think they give af? A bunch of people walking through the street with some signs and chants? They only start caring once you go after their wallets.

Capitalist wallets or the wallets of some first generation immigrant trying to make a living

Although I don’t agree with looting: peacefully protesting accomplishes nothing.
Until the wealthy and the politicians are disrupted and start to feel unsafe then nothing will change

To sit here and say because people are stealing food from a store, the protests are no longer about CoL or school is beyond ridiculous and this feels like an attempt to discredit the entire movement. Literally exactly what mfs like say about things like the BLM protests or the Civil Rights protests. Did we forget the number one cause of stealing is a rise in poverty which is a direct correlation with cost of living? Or are we being intentionally ignorant? Not saying it’s cool that they’re looting, but yall are kinda ridiculous.
