Why would a recruiter call me their strongest candidate and then ghost me for 3 weeks?

I had a phone interview with a recruiter for an entry-level operations role.

It went so well that she literally said, “Honestly, you’re exactly the kind of person the hiring manager wants.”

She explained the salary, the benefits, the schedule, and even asked when I could start.

At the end, she told me I’d hear back within two business days.

I was obviously excited, so I checked my email constantly for the next week.

Nothing.

I sent a polite follow-up. No response.

I waited another week and sent one final email asking if there were any updates.

Still nothing.

The weird part is that she viewed my LinkedIn profile twice during that period.

Then, three weeks after our call, I saw the exact same job posted again.

I applied to it just to see what would happen.

The next morning, I got an automated rejection email.

So apparently, I’m their ideal candidate, their preferred candidate, and also not qualified enough to receive a human-written email.

I’m still applying elsewhere, but I genuinely don’t understand why recruiters make promises they have no intention of keeping.

How common is it for employers to request professional references AFTER you’ve already started working?

• Upvotes

I recently accepted an offer from a company in the US. My conditional offer states that employment is contingent upon reference checks and background verification.
I’ve completed my background check and they initiated my onboarding process.
However, I was never asked to provide professional references during background verification and no former managers were contacted about my work performance.
My question is: How likely is it that the company will ask for professional references after I’ve already started working?
To clarify, I’m specifically referring to references from former managers or coworkers regarding job performance, not employment verification (dates of employment, job titles, etc.). Thanks!

Looking for my next opportunity in AI, IT, or Tech Sales (Toronto) – any help means a lot

Hey everyone,
I've been lurking here for a while and figured it's time to actually ask for help.
My last role recently came to an end, and I'm now looking for what's next. For the past few years I've worked in IT at a large consulting firm and in the insurance industry, supporting everyone from new hires to executives, managing devices and assets in ServiceNow, and making sure things just worked for people.
The part of my last role that got me most excited was working with the AI team. I tested model outputs, flagged data quality issues, and helped improve what we were building. That's the direction I really want to grow in.
I've also always enjoyed the people side of things. I worked in retail sales before IT and I hold an LLQP license, so I'm genuinely interested in tech sales too, especially selling something I actually understand.
What I'm hoping to find:
Anything AI-related
IT roles
Tech sales roles with a base salary + commission
I'm not looking for commission-only. I want to put everything into a role, and I'd love to be somewhere that invests in its people too.
If you know of an opening, are hiring, can refer me, or even just have advice on companies worth looking at, I'd be really grateful. Happy to send my resume over DM.
Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone else out here searching too.

Applied to 100 jobs and haven’t received a single interview — how do I find roles that fit my background?

Thumbnail

I’m looking for some career advice because I’m struggling to figure out which roles are the best fit for my experience, and I feel like I might be targeting the wrong positions.

My background spans data analysis, market research, and financial services compliance and risk. I started my career as a Data Analyst at a market research company, where I worked with data and analysis, and later moved into compliance and risk-related roles within banking. My experience includes regulatory change management, risk and control assessments, governance, and compliance-related processes.

I’m now looking for my next opportunity in the US financial services job market, but I’m finding it difficult to identify positions where my overall experience would be a strong match.

I’ve applied to around 100 jobs directly through company career websites and haven’t received a single interview. I’ve been looking at roles across compliance, regulatory change, operational risk, risk and controls, governance, and related functions, but I’m starting to wonder whether I’m spreading myself too thin or missing other career paths that would suit my background better.

My biggest question is: What job titles should I actually be searching for?

I’d love to hear from people who have experience in financial services, compliance, risk, data analytics, or recruiting.
Given my combination of data analytics, market research, and banking compliance experience, what specific roles would you recommend targeting?

Are there roles that combine analytical skills with compliance or risk that I might be overlooking?

Would I be better off focusing on compliance and risk roles, exploring business/data analyst positions within financial services, or considering other adjacent functions?

How do you identify which job descriptions are a realistic match for your experience rather than just applying because the responsibilities sound somewhat relevant?

For anyone who has made a similar career transition, what job titles helped you get interviews?

I’m not necessarily looking to change careers completely. I want to identify the roles where my existing experience is relevant and where I can position myself as a strong candidate.

After 100 applications without an interview, I think I need to reassess my targeting before sending out another 100.

If you had my background, what exact job titles would you search for on LinkedIn? Specific suggestions would be much more helpful than general advice to network or tailor my resume.
Thanks!

Which portal, website, or tool actually gets you a job these days?

Need honest advice. I have 10+ years experience but I can't even get an interview.

Which job portals or tools actually work? LinkedIn hasn't helped most contacts just flirt or ask to meet up when I ask for a referral.

How do you find a job in this market?

I have a bachelor’s degree in English Studies, but I have never worked before. I don’t know where to apply for jobs or what kind of work I can do with my degree. I’m currently broke and have no money at all. Where can I apply for a job, and what should I do?
