GLOW UP! 60 days sober from alcohol [38]
Just 60 days alcohol free. No filters on both. (I got lip filler a week ago which is why my lips are more plump in the after picture.) I look scary in the first picture. Morning, hungover, on a bender - probably already had some Tito’s before taking the picture. I did originally take it so I can look back at how disgusting I look in case I ever tried out the sober thing.
*Edit: I didn't expect this post to blow up so much. I appreciate everyone's kind words and encouragement! I cannot respond to everyone, so for those asking for my skincare routine: First and foremost, HYDRATE. I drink water from a 40 oz tumbler, I drink about 3 of those a day. I cleanse my face with Cetaphil cleanser. Then I use COSRX OneStep Peptide Collagen Toner Pads. I apply dermastart clear choice sport shield spf 45. Then I apply KrX Mela Defense Whitening Serum. I repeat the same before bed minus the sunscreen. Before bed I also add Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Lift + Sculpt Eye Cream. GOOD LUCK to everyone on your journey! #ODAAT
PSA: Can all the people that don't know how to discipline themselves and put in their 110% stop projecting and nitpicking every detail of these pictures? And trying to convince themselves and others that this isn't possible or realistic, that it's the lighting, that it's the camera lens, the position of the photo, that my freckles are darker in the first picture, or anything else you're trying so hard to justify yourselves with? Lol, clearly you've never been a full blown alcoholic that decided to make a 180 - not only by putting the bottle down but adding a lot of other healthy things to your new routine. I purposely posted a picture without a filter, edits or make up and put my bare face out there even though the first picture was embarrassing. I did it so others can get some motivation because I used to LOVE seeing others progress pictures and it gave me hope to be there one day too when I was ready. There is no benefit here for me by posting some unrealistic picture lol. Yes, it is very possible. Please don't let people like that make you think otherwise or discourage you.

Thanks everyone! Too embarrassed to post on my social media accounts for now. I want to add, I have also lost 16 lbs since then. Have been more aware of what I’m putting in my body/calories. Taking all my vitamins/supplements for things I was low on after I got my blood work checked. Drinking lots of water. Doing my skincare routine nightly instead of passing out drunk without even washing my face.

I’m currently in an outpatient program. Therapy. I’m on Wellbutrin for depression, adhd and help with dopamine levels. It’s my first time being medicated, it’s helped tremendously. Also, I’ve seen numerous people writing about how Wellbutrin stopped their cravings for alcohol. That was not given to me with that intention, but it may have happened. I’ve never been able to make it past 3 weeks. I gained 50 lbs. I was depressed. Sick all the time. I stopped getting dolled up. My hair was falling out and very dry. It hit me really hard after 35. I hated looking at myself. I was just done feeling and looking that way. My liver enzymes were also elevated and had bit of fatty liver happening so that also helped me to get serious for once. I felt like I was in a loop of misery and I started acting worse and worse and I kinda felt like it was just time to say goodbye to that part of me.

Really proud of you! Wellbutrin is good for stopping alcohol cravings as well as nicotine (Its sold as Zyban to stop smoking). It also has a weight loss component to it - which could be a good unintended side effect.

You have to want to. And you have to get over the "hump." Sometimes you need new friends.

u/JustLurkCarryOn 5d ago
Not OP, but currently four months sober after 20 years of drinking too much (past six years it was every single day).
I won’t generalize but, for me, the first month or so was very difficult and I removed myself from social situations where it was around. After that I could feel such a difference that I became essentially afraid to have a drink. I don’t want to feel the way I did before so even when I have a craving, the fear of not being able to stop at one is stronger (and I know I definitely won’t stop at one).
Interestingly, I have also become hyper-aware of people around me when they are drunk and find their behavior extremely annoying. Either they can have one or two and function normally (which I know I can’t do) or have too much and sound stupid/annoying (which I am sure is what would happen to me). I have found myself in plenty of social situations with alcohol since the first month and it has been a lot easier to abstain during them than I thought it would be. YMMV though, just my experience.

I know I'm not the person you asked, but for me personally taking a GLP1 has really helped with my cravings. It does something with the reward system in the brain idk how it works exactly. Plus Naltrexone as needed. If you want to stop, you can do this❤️ come over to r/stopdrinking!

Congrats! Your liver is healing and you are reducing your risk of breast cancer!
The basis of good skincare is an L Ascorbic acid vitamin c serum and sunscreen every morning, and prescription tretinoin followed by moisturizer 30 minutes later every night after you get your skin retinized.

Literally everything. I can't remember it all. But let me TRY to list what I take every day now as best as I can. I take Electrolytes/debloat (from Promix) every morning. Magnesium, Iron, B1, B12, Pumpkin Seed Oil, D3, Probiotic+Prebiotic gummies, Zoyava Multi Collagen Peptides Capsules, Potassium - and a couple days a week I take some fish oil, milk thistle, grass fed beef liver capsules.

Something that's been really helpful in my sobriety is telling absolutely everyone. I tell people all the time that I'm sober. I tell people I was an alcoholic and I was ruining my life. Recently I was tempted to drink, I told like five people immediately. This disease is something that thrives in the dark, force it into the light at every possible moment!!

What's the nightly skincare routine? I need help
8
u/Coyote_ugly_88 6d ago
I truly used to drink until I was dried out. I didn't do any skin care 95% of the time, I'd just go to bed with a dirty face with not even as little as a moisturizer. I buy a lot of Korean skin care, serums, moisturizers. I use KRX aesthetics mela defense whitening cream before bed. It's brightened my skin. I try different things to see what works. Hydrate/drink lots of water!

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
6
u/ThatsaFishBarcode 6d ago
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

I hit my year Oct 1 and I don’t look or feel different which shocks me because I was a full blown alcoholic drinking a 12 pack and mini shots every single night for decades. I’m more depressed than ever, my eating habits suck, and I’ve gained weight. I am so proud of you for your healthy and positive changes - please keep going!
13
u/Coyote_ugly_88 5d ago
Congratulations on hitting a year, that is so BIG and I hope to be able to say that one day too. The picture on the left is one of my worst ones... which is why I took the picture bc I thought I looked RIDICULOUS. Alcohol affects everyone different. I was very inflamed, swollen, I cried a lot. I puked a lot. I was dehydrated. I was binge drinking and binge eating at night before bed. Alcohol made me gain 50 lbs. So I think that's why me cutting it out is making me lose weight (a lot of people gain weight) and also I've started intermittent fasting/calorie counting. I've been taking better care of my skin and my body. I struggled with pretty bad depression, I'm taking Wellbutrin now and it's seemed to help with that a lot. Wish you the best of luck!

Don't take this as some sort of evidence that things suck because you quit alcohol.
Healthwise you've taken a big step. It's ok if you get caught up in a bad habit here and there. Take it one step at a time.

Alcoholic here that’s been sober for about 6 years. Seems like you beat the substance that was holding you down but never battled the reason you were using in the first place.

Only removing alc won't fix things. You need to replace that consumption and habit with other, good things. Work on your diet and your exercise consciously with discipline and you WILL see improvement.

1000000% agree. Alcohol is just the first step. You have to do the work for whatever your main goal is.

Time to start exercising. No excuses. You don't need a gym to workout. Start with 15 mins a day. You already did the hard part, now you just need to focus and do the easy fun work. Everybody is cheering for you.

As detrimental as alcohol is, it only makes up so much of your health. One of the best antidepressants there is is exercise. If you start eating proper nutrition and get away from bad foods and start exercising you'll start to see major benefits.

Have you had blood work done? I just came out of a 5 day stay in the hospital after 3 transfusions and a ferritin infusion for anema caused by bleeding gastritis. My D2, B12, Hemoglobin--everything at rock bottom. My doc said my bloodwork looked like someone's from a third world country. Six weeks out and I can't believe that I thought the way I felt was "normal." Just an idea. And, BTW--AWESOME to OP. You were beautiful then, and your beautiful now--but more importantly you feel good again!

This is so fucking difficult ! People that didn’t walk this road can’t even grasp.
I was a drug addicted teen 14-22 on the needle , and I had alcohol problems 26-29 years old.
Not gonna lie personally kicking alcohol was harder than anything. 3 year black out.
I am so very proud of you! Keep going ! And you look amazing , well done
Edit: thanks for the award guys, greatly appreciated. Myself is 5 years sober now, if I can do it, so can anyone! Life is good!

u/Coyote_ugly_88 6d ago
I think some people that haven't been there fail to realize how bad it was and how extremely we were damaging our bodies from the inside out. I used to drink vodka for breakfast. Alcohol is very hard to quit. Also, not everyone abuses it as hard so I feel like the more abuse you did the more drastic your physical results will be. As well as mental/health wise of course! I am proud of you as well, that is huge. Congratulations!!!

u/808Da_Bears 5d ago
I’m very proud of you. Sixty days is a huge accomplishment, and as someone who is still struggling, seeing your progress means a lot.
My struggle started with alcohol. I went to rehab and stayed sober for 17 months, but after a bad day, I started drinking heavily again. One morning, with a terrible hangover, a friend introduced me to heroin. I used it for a short time before an overdose involving heroin and cocaine left me in a coma for ten days. When I woke up, I tried to change my life. I moved out of state, started taking kratom, and eventually convinced myself I could drink socially. That didn’t work. Now I’m dependent on kratom and drinking about a third of a bottle of vodka every night. I don’t drink during the day, but only because I rely on kratom to feel okay.My wife left me about a year ago. We both struggled with alcohol addiction, but she didn’t use kratom. I spent a lot of money on it, and that really upset her. From the outside, I probably look like I’m doing reasonably well. I’ve built a career and make a decent living, but between my high rent and my addictions, there’s very little left. It feels like an endless cycle, and honestly, I don’t know how to get out.I’m sharing this because I understand how hard what you’re doing is. Your progress gives me hope that change is still possible for me, too. Congratulations on those sixty days. You have every reason to be proud of yourself.
I can’t believe I just put my shame online.6
u/Hides-inside 5d ago
No shame in your honesty. I respect you for being open and honest.I wish you well x

I've heard multiple people say stopping drinking is harder than heroin and the withdrawal can be worse.
3
u/Coyote_ugly_88 6d ago
This is correct. I tapered myself off. The correct way would be to go into detox. If you don’t have health insurance, go to the ER, they will have no choice but to detox you. It’s safer. I’ve been to a 5 day detox before when I attempted to get sober. This time I didn’t, I didn’t want to explain the time off for work, I was mentally exhausted at that point. I joined an outpatient program instead.

7
u/QuantumPotato49 5d ago
You don't look disgusting in the first picture. You were hungover and struggling. I'm glad you made the decision to stop drinking, but try to be kinder to yourself
3
u/subhuman85 5d ago
You're right, but sometimes that level of sheer disgust in oneself can be a serious motivator to change when nothing else has stuck. Looking in the mirror every morning and hating what I saw - or being afraid to look in the first place - was the final straw for me. Yes, pure vanity got me to quit drinking. In this case, the end justifies the means.
7
u/DrAsthma 5d ago
Man this makes me wish I woulda took some before photos. I weighed 300lbs+ until I was 30. The pictures I have from then are always trying to hide it. Same with booze. It's been over two years for me, and I wasn't expecting such drastic physical changes, but here we are. Good job on kicking the poison, keep it up and keep your defenses up, I threw away like 5 years of being sober the last time I decided I could have a drink and not be an alcoholic.

Hey, do you have any tips on how you did this? I’m struggling with a similar thing, drinking every day eating unhealthy and can’t get off the wagon for more than a few days at a time every few weeks
3
u/Coyote_ugly_88 6d ago
Read some of my other replies I’ve written more details. 😊 My first advice is to go get some help, I joined an outpatient program and started seeing a therapist first. Then the motivation came. I drank a few more times while in the program… until one day I just didn’t and kept it going. I’ve never been able to go past 21 days. I also told myself, I’ve never been sober for more than 3 consecutive weeks since I started drinking before the age of 21. I’m 38 now I was curious how I’m going to look and feel and that motivated me and is keeping me motivated. Everything is improving, it’s crazy. I can also sleep through the night and I don’t have demonic nightmares anymore. Still some nightmares but no more weird scary things like that. Tbh, look wise - it didn’t start hitting me bad until after the age of 35.
3
u/Critical-Extension66 6d ago
Thank you for responding, I’m 28 now and desperately trying to get a hold of the situation. 21 days seems like a pipe dream haha although I haven’t had a drink since Wednesday atm.
Your story is quite inspirational, I hope I can get through as well. It’s funny it inspires me but also makes me want to drink cos it makes me realize how deep of a hole I have to dig out of, I also gained a ton if weight this past year just from drinking and eating super unhealthy.
Anyways, appreciate the post! Wish you the best going forward, hope things continue to improve

u/bandbynurdz 6d ago
Your situation and mine are eerily similar. We are the exact same age and I really didn’t notice a lot of the signs until almost three years ago. Hangovers became brutal.
Working out became impossible. Bloat and weight gain became apparent. Work suffered. Relationships suffered until they just stagnated to nothing which may be even worse. Thankfully no legal problems but I was playing with drinking and driving and drinking in my car too much to be anything but one lucky asshole.Only difference (besides being a man I guess) is alcohol killed my REM cycle and I never dreamt for better or worse. I’ve had some vivid guilt and conflict nightmares to the point I wondered if I started drinking hard just to keep them at bay. Ex-GFs, old friends, colleagues, bosses, just about anyone I’ve disappointed is coming out of the woodwork. But there is something cathartic about it. Awful accompanying night sweats too. Glad I don’t have a partner at the moment if for that reason alone.
I got three weeks until a relapse but I noticed my tolerance has bottomed out and I got a splitting headache after even just a little drinking. I’ve been avoiding stress the best I can but still feel a strong psychological urge to drink when I’m annoyed, bored, lonely or angry. It’s a suffocating feeling but I guess I shouldn’t complain. Back up to two weeks and staying strong. Going to consistent therapy and considering outpatient rehab. Grateful I don’t seem to have severe withdrawal symptoms or organ damage according to my blood work.
You look great and I love your username.
This may inspire me to hit the addiction subs and go to some meetings. It’s nice to see someone as a relative peer working through the same process.→ More replies (1)

3.5 years sober, slightly heavier because I’m eating not just drinking which is good. I am still a highly addictive personality. I just changed my fixation while battling daily at first. It has become easier as time has passed. I still want to drink when football is on, or when the weather turns nice. But after seeing liver poisoning first hand, I never want to drink again. You should get the I AM SOBER app. It’s pretty cool to track progress and savings. I’m up like $15k haha

Good job.
I quit smoking over 30 years ago and I imagine I would have died a painful death.Quitting any substance is difficult when it’s highly addictive. I realized that I have a lot of willpower that will let me achieve most anything.
Smoked about 1.5 packs a day at my peak from 15 to 30 and quit in about 3 months. The trick here is to tap into that willpower. You already have by stopping your drinking now you just need to understand that only you are stopping yourself from doing anything.Get over that mental hurdle and let that willpower take over your life.

Well done. You look fabulous. The area around your eyes speaks volumes to the benefits of cutting out alcohol. I often take long breaks from drinking to give my body a chance to catch up and heal. It’s amazing what a difference it makes. All the best to you.
