Regarding the state of this subreddit

Hey everyone,

Thank you so much for browsing and sharing posts here in /r/gooddesign. When I created this sub, I honestly didn’t expect it to grow this much, and I’ll admit I’ve been learning how to handle it as it grows. It’s been awesome seeing what you all bring here.

I’ll continue keeping an eye on reports and doing my best to maintain the quality of the sub as we grow. I care about keeping this a place for genuinely good design, not low effort posts or spam.

With that said, I’d love your input. What would make this community better? What would you like to see as we move forward?

Some ideas I’ve been considering are artwork/branding for the subreddit, as well as an AutoMod setup to help filter low-effort content.

This subreddit has gotten big because of all of you, and I want to build it with the community, not just on my own. So drop your suggestions in the comments. Your input genuinely matters.

Light bulb with glow-in-the-dark pole cord so you can find it in the dark

this Japanese light socket has a glow-in-the-dark pull cord way you can find it if the room is dark. I brought this back to North America after my trip to Japan (I collect electrical devices) and have this set up in my bunkbed because even with the lights on in my bedroom it’s still dark underneath. Interestingly enough, the lightbulb in the socket is a Vietnamese 220 V 50 Hz rated bulb running at 100 V 60 Hz. (I have a voltage converter that converts the mains 120 V 60 Hz of North America into 100 V 60 Hz because I also bought a radio that plugs into the wall while I was in Japan and it needs 100 V because that’s what Japan uses instead of 110 or 220.

Need some advice

I'm a graphic design student working on a project around this problem:

People often find animals in public spaces but don't know whether they need help, what to do immediately, or when to contact a professional.

If you encountered this situation, what information would you want immediately?

If you were given this problem, how would you approach it?

Any thoughts, critiques or completely different directions are welcome. Pls I need help😭🙏

You don't have to be an animal expert, I'm mainly interested in how you'd approach this as a graphic designer/ as a design problem.

The Spiral Staircase

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to share a little bit about this spiral staircase that I posted in another sub because it received so much interest and questions.

The design process alone on this piece was an undertaking, working in three dimensions on a sloping spiral while following the building code, is extremely challenging.

This staircase is made from solid black walnut slabs and fully handcrafted for the entire process. This project was extremely time consuming, taking over 1,000 shop hours to complete. The treads are each individually textured with a gouge to achieve a “hammered” finish and the handrail is laminated with 23 strips of wood for a continuous curve up the staircase. The entire piece is finished with a traditional Tung oil for a classic timeless feel.

I have only two more openings for 2027, so if you’d like a custom spiral staircase in your home reach out for a free consultation and estimate!

I hope you enjoyed this, follow for more https://www.instagram.com/emerald_forest_furnishings?stkn=YTd3a29pcHh4OHNy&utm_source=qr

On a flexible metal band, different sized screw holes. So obvious, so simple. They could have made them all the same sized holes and no one would have noticed.

What’s one product design you’ve noticed is majorly flawed in everyday life, but we keep using it because everyone is just used to it?

Unorthodox Typographic Review of Snap Specs

Wrote a new piece on Snap’s upcoming Specs, but not from the usual hardware angle. It looks at what happens to reading when text leaves the page and starts living inside the world, and why things like contrast, depth and undisclosed display specs quietly decide whether AR becomes useful for real work or just impressive demos. If you care about type, AR, or the future of reading, you might find it worth your time.
