For anyone looking for a job

Post image

Saw this at the Safeway at Centerplace so I thought I'd pass it along since folks occasionally ask about jobs on here.

$17.50/hr? Is that a fucking joke?

Idk why I keep seeing Greeley subreddit pop up when I live in Salt Lake City, but we'd kill for that over here. Cashiers range from 13.50-16.00 starting, I've literally never seen anything starting at 17.50

I’m in Aurora. I work for Sam’s Club where the starting pay is $21/hr

My wife is a team lead at Sam's and makes $27, she's been there almost 4 years

I’ve been there 8 years, but I’m only at $22

I think that's in the typical range for cashiers in this area. Hopefully the wage goes up quickly. But, as desperate as folks are right now, hopefully it helps someone.

It's an entry level job, not one designed to be the only job or income! Why is that so hard to understand?

You get into a job like this, and then move up in the organization into jobs that have more responsibility and pay.

Besides, the benefits are nice and there is advancement opportunities. See this for more details: https://eofd.fa.us6.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/CandidateExperience/en/sites/CX_1001/pages/Safeway

It makes no sense that anyone should start an entry level job without skills and experience and expect a primary source of income.

Lmfao how much do you think these jobs should be paying?

Something you can live on if you work 40 hours a week. That's the whole damn point of working, doesn't matter the job.

Jobs like these are for teenagers working part time

And who runs the grocery store when they're in school? It's just a bad faith argument. You go to a grocery store. You use their services. I guarantee it.

That's a line trotted out by people who don't look at the actual people working the jobs. Those people are convenient for corporations because they vote like that and since as a society we don't want people on the street, the rest of the tax base winds up making up the difference while the corporations have record profits.

Every job between the seed in the dirt and the food in your belly is necessary and I'm tired of people insinuating that people working those jobs are inferior and shouldn't earn enough to survive.

As a society we need balance, not financial extremes.

I'm not saying everyone should make the exact same, but if a person works 40 hours a week they should be able to afford food and a roof over their head. It would be nice if they could save some too so they don't feel like they exist just simply to get back to work and serve people who view them as a lower caste.

Yeah but also $17.50 an hour is great pay for a job that requires 0 skills. If people want to make more, then learn some valuable skills.

You're still working with the belief that a job shouldn't pay a wage that allows a person to live in society. You should really think deeply about this because when the elites replace everyone with robots, how will society survive? The more desperate people are, the more desperate they will act and desperation on a national scale turns into bloody revolution. How many times do we have to see it play out before people see other people as people?

Do you want your future kids and grandkids to have to fear for their physical safety just so elites with bunkers in New Zealand can have extra numbers on a screen? Or would you rather society actually function?

I’d recommend you get off the internet and start living your life

Indeed I am. About to go into work on my day off haha.

But seriously--ruminate on the logical outcome of the trajectory we are on.

It’s definitely scary, no arguing there!

Have you ever relied on a job such as this as your primary source of income?

1

u/AdhesivenessBasic162 2d ago

Nope I wouldn’t let my life get to that point

Then perhaps you should keep your mouth shut about things you don’t understand.

Do you think a job that requires 0 skills should make more than 17.50? We live in the land of opportunity if thags not enough for you then get some skills and find a different job

"No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country."- President Franklin D. Roosevelt

The way I see it is providing a living wage is both the moral obligation and the cost of doing business in this country for any profitable company. We are all one misfortune away from having to rely on a job such as this and I pray that if that is to happen to you, that strangers show you more empathy and compassion than you have displayed here.

Well considering 50 years ago, a man could work at a grocery store and afford a house, a car and the wife could stay home. Not to mention the price of a house has doubled in the last 10 years. Wages are well behind inflation. Mind you I'm also a conservative.

u/AdhesivenessBasic162 2d ago

Oh I for sure agree that wages are behind inflation. But I still think 17.50 an hour is fair for a job that requires no skills

Lots of people here looking at the pay poorly but im considering hopping by and using it as a second job
