Read the books.......
Okay, I know this has already been discussed plenty of times on here, but this has been on my mind for a while now, and I thought that just putting it out there and sharing my thoughts might help.
So, just to give you some background, I was introduced to Harry Potter pretty late. I mean, I knew there was something called Harry Potter and that it had something to do with magic, but for some reason, I kept avoiding it. Eventually, in 2020, with COVID going on and not much to do while sitting at home, I finally convinced myself to watch the films.
And boy, was I hooked! I watched the entire series in a four-day marathon, and then started another marathon the very next day.
Now, mind you, I hadn't read the books at that point, so the movies were my first introduction to the world of Harry Potter. And, well, Dan and Emma had such insane chemistry in the films that I instantly started shipping them. So, naturally, I was pretty disappointed and, frankly, shocked when Hermione ended up with Ron and Harry ended up with Ginny.
Naturally, I went deeper into the fandom to see what people thought about the relationships. And, as you can probably guess, almost everyone in the main HP fandom was like, "Ah, go and read the books" or "Average movie watcher." So that's exactly what I did. I borrowed the books from a friend and started reading them with an open mind.
And while I do agree that the books provide more buildup for Ron and Hermione's relationship, as well as Harry and Ginny's, something about both pairings still felt wrong to me. I just couldn't wrap my head around why Ron and Hermione would fall for each other, or why Harry would fall for Ginny. Even in the books, Harry and Ginny's relationship felt like it came out of nowhere.
And here's the funniest part: as I was reading the books, the one thing I couldn't help but notice was the ABSURD amount of effort JKR seemed to put into making sure Harry and Hermione didn't fall for each other. It was almost as if, between the lines, I could feel the story naturally gravitating towards them ending up together, only for JKR to constantly steer it in the opposite direction.
And by "an absurd amount of effort," I also mean the sheer number of free passes Ron seems to get throughout the series.
He abandons Harry during the Triwizard Tournament, and all Harry seems to think about is how much he misses Ron's company. Then, when Ron finally comes back, he's welcomed with open arms, with virtually no consequences for his actions. The same thing happens in Deathly Hallows.
But when Hermione tells McGonagall about the Firebolt, suddenly both boys turn against her and ignore her for months. Granted, Ron is primarily responsible for this, but Harry doesn't exactly go out of his way to reach out to her either.
Or take the second book, for instance. Harry helps Dobby gain his freedom despite Dobby having repeatedly put him in danger, even though Dobby's intentions were ultimately noble. Yet, when Hermione starts SPEW in Goblet of Fire, Harry shows practically no interest in supporting her. I remember reading that and thinking, Come onnnnnn!
And don't even get me started on the Yule Ball. It genuinely never crosses Harry's mind to ask Hermione to go with him. I mean, she was the only person who stood by him during the first task, even when his so-called best mate accused him of cheating and abandoned him out of jealousy. Hermione believed in him, supported him, and helped him prepare for the task. And yet, asking her to the ball doesn't even occur to him?
Then there's Hermione's behaviour in Half-Blood Prince, which, to me, feels completely out of character when it comes to believing Harry's suspicions about Malfoy. In Chamber of Secrets, she was the one who helped brew the Polyjuice Potion, a highly complex and illegal potion, just to investigate whether Malfoy was the Heir of Slytherin. And they didn't even have any conclusive proof that he was responsible for unleashing the monster! Yet, in the sixth book, she has so much trouble believing Harry when he suspects Malfoy of being a Death Eater.
I mean, I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.
Ultimately, I just feel that if JKR had allowed the story to develop more organically, rather than forcing the pairings she had already decided on, Harry and Hermione would have ended up together. I mean, there's a reason so many people, even in the books felt that there was something more between them. Viktor Krum noticed it, Rita Skeeter certainly tried to make something of it (although we can probably ignore her), and even Ron thought so too (as evidenced by the vision the Horcrux shows him).
And honestly, I think allowing Harry and Hermione to end up together could have given us not only one of the best fictional romances but also a richer, more compelling story overall.
Think about it: Harry would have spent more of his time with Hermione instead of spending nearly all his free time playing Wizard's Chess, playing Exploding Snap with Ron, or playing Quidditch. He would have had more opportunities to learn about magic, develop his skills, and become a more knowledgeable and competent wizard. Perhaps he wouldn't have been quite so unprepared in so many of his encounters with Voldemort, either.
Of course, I'm not suggesting that being with Hermione would magically solve all of Harry's problems, but I do wonder whether it would have made him a more capable wizard and reduced his reliance on the plot armour that seems to save him at the last possible moment whenever he's up against the most feared Dark wizard of all time.
I just feel that we could have gotten a far richer story had the narrative been allowed to unfold more naturally. And perhaps that's one of the reasons why I haven't revisited either the books or the movies since. I still vividly remember the feeling I was left with after finishing the films and, eventually, the books. I was equally happy and sad, happy to have discovered such a beautiful, immersive world that I had grown so attached to, yet sad to think about all the missed potential, all the possibilities that could have made the story even more compelling. It's a strange feeling, really, to fall in love with a story and its characters, only to be left wondering what could have been.
Anyway, these are just some thoughts I've had on my mind for a long time, and I figured that putting them out there might help. I'm curious to know if anyone else feels the same way, especially those who've read the books and still believe that Harry and Hermione would have made more sense together.

Looking For Looking for a DH
Everyone,
The author of Harry Potter and the Secret Pact on AO3 had this to say on their latest chapter. It is about a fic they read at one time which involved Harry and Hermione apparating away from the wedding without Ron after losing him in the chaos. I am curious myself to read this story. Does anyone know what story he is talking about?

Self Promotion Something new
I finished writing the first chapter of the new and my first ever fic, it's something new, well sort of since there are a few fics about wandless magic out there, I thought of the concept and thought of this idea and wanted to chime in on it, a idea of the concept is given in the description,
To give a bit more thorough idea here, throughout the entire canon story, the Death Eaters hid behind their money, their names, and the Dark Lord to treat the muggles horribly. They were villains who relied on the other side following Dumbledore's soft rules of mercy, giving Harry these powers and the ability to use his bare-hands for magic rids the story of their power to an extent, the Death Eaters watching a teenager cross the room in a second to take apart the heaviest hitters of the dark side turns their arrogant pride into trash and is a bit satisfying as well, I hope you like it, feel free to drop any feedback if you want to.

Fanfic Discussion What's some of the most hilarious cases of Ron-bashing you've seen in a HHR story?
I've long forgotten the name of this story but it takes place after DH and not only did Ron use a love potion on Hermione but Ginny also used one on Harry. The part that cracked me up the most was that Molly used one on Arthur as well. I thought it was a parody but no, it was treated with utmost sincerity that the entire Weasley family is full of loveless, vindictive psychos because of Molly Weasley.

Looking For Help with looking for a fic
In the story, Harry is, iirc, immortal and met a Hermione-variant years back into the past(Medieval age, I believe). He loses her and decides to go into a deep sleep in hopes of finding her reincarnation, underneath a Black family home(Can’t remember if it was Grimmauld or not), as the progenitor of their magic. It was Hermione and Sirius who managed to find where he slept.
I don’t believe it was completed. Thank you!

Fanart Just trying out a new rendering style
I was looking at some artists online and tried to learn abit from how they render, also I saw how my skin tone was a bit too pink for them on a lot of my drawings so I tried to change that habit and actually make a reliable and consistent palette to use for their skin tone. Lwk I am quite happy with how it turned out at the end, really like how I drew Harry's eye.

Harry As An Abuse Victim
I only recently started to get into H/HR, after over a decade of having little interest in Harry Potter before it was abruptly rekindled earlier this year. As a child I sort of accepted that "ah, well of course Harry ends up with Ginny and Hermionie with Ron, because that's what happens" but as an adult I've turned a critical eye on that state of affairs and, like many, realized there's a good deal of evidence and subtext pointing to the notion that perhaps that is not how JKR should have written things.
the last couple of weeks I realized one of the reasons I do enjoy the ship–apart from the fact that it's very much there in the source material!–is how Hermione often seems to be the only one who is good at really empathizing with Harry, which is especially important in the context of the fact that Harry is basically a victim of decade-long child abuse by his legal guardian and her family. I know I'm far from the first person to think this, but I believe a close reading of a lot of Harry's actions support the idea that the Dursleys left him with a very low sense of self worth even if he isn't aware of it (hell, I'm sure someone has made a compelling argument Dumbledore probably intended for this to happen to make Harry more willing to sacrifice himself at the end!). Which brings me to why I find this a key component of Harry/Hermionie: her ability to empathize with him. It often makes her the only person able to care about him, especially as Harry struggles to care about, or even love, himself.

Translation is such a fascinating thing. It brings your words to life in an entirely different language.
Translation is such a fascinating thing. It brings your words to life in an entirely different language.
Recently, I’ve been asking Harmony authors for permission to translate their works into my own language. And honestly, it’s incredibly difficult. Extremely difficult, in fact, because Vietnamese has a very complex system of pronouns and forms of address. It’s something that can be surprisingly hard to explain.
Given Harry and Hermione’s relationship throughout the books and beyond, translating fanfiction presents a major challenge, and the first obstacle is how they address each other.
In English, characters simply use “I” and “you.” But in Vietnamese, those pronouns carry entirely different nuances. Lý Lan, the Vietnamese translator of Harry Potter, elevated the series to another level with her translation. At the same time, she set an incredibly high standard for future fanfiction translators, because it’s so difficult to replace the versions of these characters that her translation has already established in our minds.
In Vietnam, our system of personal pronouns is extraordinarily diverse and complicated. It encompasses regional dialects, age and social hierarchy, and the nature of relationships, whether between friends, lovers, enemies, or husbands and wives.
For our trio, I’ve decided to use “bồ” for “you” and “mình” for “I.”
“Bồ” is a relatively uncommon form of address, used primarily in southern Vietnam. Its origins are somewhat debated. Some sources trace it back to a French word, while others suggest that it evolved through several linguistic changes before becoming an affectionate way of addressing a friend.
So, our three characters will call one another “bồ” instead of “you” and use “mình” instead of “I.”
When addressing the Malfoys, however, I’ll use “mày” for “you” and “tao” for “I.”
So, what makes “mày-tao” different?
It can sound rude, crude, or impolite, but in everyday life, it’s actually quite common among close friends. Many people who know each other well use these pronouns when speaking casually.
However, because Harry Potter is a children’s book, the fact that the characters address their friends as “bồ-mình” makes the “mày-tao” used with the Slytherins sound much more hostile and confrontational by comparison.
These choices of address affect how readers perceive the relationships between characters in our language.
Here’s another example: Dumbledore.
In the English books, Harry addresses Dumbledore as “Professor.” In the Vietnamese translation, however, he calls him “Cụ,” an honorific used for a much older person.
Similarly, when professors address students using “Mr.” or “Miss,” the Vietnamese translation often uses terms such as “trò” (both) “cậu” for boys and “cô” for girls, depending on the context. These forms of address establish a clear distinction between the teacher and the student.
Because of all these differences, I sometimes feel that Harry and Hermione’s relationship comes across differently when I read the Vietnamese version compared with the English original.
When I read the English text, the characters use “I” and “you,” and I can fill in the emotional nuances myself. But when I read the Vietnamese version, I find myself following the emotions and interpretations shaped by Lý Lan’s choice of words.
And this is where things get interesting.
Because of the pronouns, Harmony can sometimes feel less intimate to Vietnamese readers. Harry consistently uses “bồ-mình” with Hermione, which establishes a relatively neutral, friendly dynamic. Yet with Ginny, he uses “anh-em.”
In Vietnamese, “anh-em” is a common way for a man to address a younger woman, with the woman addressing him as “anh” and herself as “em.” It’s somewhat comparable to the Korean terms “oppa” and “hyung” in terms of the age-related nuances, although the actual usage and meaning are different.
This choice of pronouns can make a relationship feel more intimate, even before the dialogue itself explicitly establishes romantic feelings.
“Anh-em” is also used between biological siblings, of course. But there’s a significant difference when it’s used between a man and a younger woman who aren’t related.
Initially, “anh” can simply convey respect for someone older. However, once the two characters fall in love, the same pronouns can take on a much more intimate meaning. Every line of dialogue, every exchange between them, can feel considerably more romantic because of the way they address each other.
It’s different from Ginny using the same pronouns when speaking to her own brothers.
Meanwhile, some of Hermione’s moments of flirting with Harry can feel much more ordinary in Vietnamese. The pronouns themselves unintentionally reinforce the idea that THEY ARE JUST FRIENDS.
A LOT.
I still love Harmony when I read the Vietnamese version, but when I read the English original, it gives me an entirely different feeling. HAHAHAHAHA. =)))))))))))
So, let’s return to the question: why is translating Harmony fanfiction so difficult?
When Harry and Hermione are simply friends, I can translate their dialogue using “bồ-mình.” But when their relationship begins to develop, when things become a little ambiguous or emotionally charged, changing the way they address each other can suddenly make everything feel… much more romantic.
Far more intimate than the friendly “bồ-mình.”
Using “anh-em,” having Harry address Hermione as “tôi-em,” or having Hermione call Harry “anh” while referring to herself as “em” are all perfectly reasonable options.
But because their relationship begins as a friendship, choosing the right forms of address can be surprisingly difficult and awkward.
I think this is one of the reasons Harmony has a fanbase in Vietnam but relatively few translated or Vietnamese-written fanfics.
- They get attacked by "books fan".
This is something I encounter almost every day since I started translating Harmony fanfiction. HAHAHA.
- Translation is difficult.
Harmony fanfiction tends to adhere quite closely to the original canon, unlike Dramione and some other ships, which often venture much further into creative reinterpretation.
Staying faithful to the original plot, understanding the relationships between the characters, and translating all the relevant terminology are genuinely challenging tasks. I often have to open more than thirty tabs just to look up words and figure out how to translate them in a way that is both accurate and easy to read.
- Lý Lan’s translation has left a lasting impression on us.
Of course, fanfiction doesn’t have to follow Lý Lan’s translation. We’re free to make different choices.
However, some of her translations have become so deeply ingrained in our minds that replacing them feels almost impossible. And honestly, some of her choices are simply too brilliant to improve upon.
A perfect example is “Death Eater.” A literal translation might be something along the lines of “one who eats death,” but Lý Lan translated it as “Tử Thần Thực Tử,” a wonderfully evocative term that has become iconic among Vietnamese Harry Potter readers.
There are so many other brilliant choices in her translation, too.
But to sum it up, translating Harmony is much more difficult for me than translating Dramione. At least, that’s how I feel about it.
Reading and understanding the story is easy enough. Conveying it in another language, however, is incredibly difficult.
Western languages simply don’t have the same elaborate systems of address and honorifics that Vietnamese uses to express relationships, social hierarchies, and emotional intimacy. Or at least, they don’t express those things in quite the same way.
Sorry for rambling again, hahaha. I’ve been pretty bored while staying in the hospital.
And yes, Lý Lan is an incredible translator. But I think whenever a story is translated into another language, some aspects of the original inevitably shift a little, taking on slightly different nuances along the way.
That’s why I’ve recently become so interested in looking for details in the English original and carefully translating them again to better reflect the context.
For example, the fact that Harry often grabs Hermione’s hand when they’re in danger says a lot.
Sometimes, the smallest details can tell us so much about a relationship.
P/s: Oh, I started translating Harmony and correcting the way Harmony is portrayed in my fandom because I was honestly fed up with the way people... looked down on Hermione and Harry. And... a lot of other things, too.
But most importantly, I came across a debate about the Russian and English translations, which really piqued my interest. That led me to look up the Vietnamese translation and compare it with the English original. And honestly, the differences really do say a lot.

Harmony Fanfiction Fic Search
Hi! I'm looking for a well-written Harmony fanfiction on AO3. Harry and Ginny are married but have no children. Ginny plays for the Holyhead Harpies. Neville is away attending a conference/hotel when he sees Ginny stepping out of an elevator with another man, and she isn't wearing her wedding ring. Neville tells Harry, they get a divorce, and Hermione takes Harry into her home to support him. Harry and Hermione end up together. Does anyone know the title or have a copy if it was deleted?
