Discussion No Trade Clause -Four Big Leagues- Very Interesting
NHL:320
MLB: 35
NFL: 8
NBA: 2
Why? Do the NBA and NFL have it right?
Was listening to the 690 this afternoon and they were talking about this. When a Hellybuck or a Larkin situation arrises the teams loses leverage. It’s a self inflicted thing that the owners do to themselves. They were talking about changing a clause in the collective agreement and if suddenly a person wants to be traded they would give a lost of 10 teams. The no trade clause in a contract just ties teams hands! You than are in a compromising sitution!
I thought it was an interesting
take. Even Bettman said that No Trade clauses were not meant to work the way they are. Do you like the idea of the player providing a list of 10 teams? What do you astute people think?

They have more money to pay their players. NMC/NTC are a way to sign players for less money, as the player for the remainder of their contract doesn't have to worry about moving.

The salary cap is going up. Crosby's first extension Contract in 2008 was 5×8.7 million 15% of the salary cap, the same contract today would be 5×15.6 million. You can't look at the Habs contracts because their team friendly.
The Salary cap in 2008 was 56,700,000 today the salary cap is 104,000,000.

teams use nmc to get cheaper deals, players take less money for stability. nothing wrong with that
owners complain about leverage but they offered the clause in first place. nobody forced them to do it

The problem is now players are weaponizing it, demanding a trade but only giving the team a few teams they are willing to play for, holding the team hostage in some cases as the other teams aren't willing to part ways with draft capital or players.

Yeah but this is something you négociate. GM should just say no. But they desesperatly want THE player so they agree for anything.
Blame the GM

Don't trade them. Let Hellybuck sit until he decides to honour the contract he signed.

If Bettman has a problem with it he should probably tell owners to stop giving them out like Halloween candy.
Some teams have such low tax rates im shocked they need additional 'selling points' like NMCs to attract players.

NTC/NMC clauses are fine, but they are included as restrictions on actions by the team. If a player asks to be traded, then, in my view, these clauses shouldn't apply.

When a player the damands a trade and then enforces his NTC the GM should not trade him.

In Canada the players get recognized everywhere they go. In a lot of US cities they can be left alone away from the rink

The nba pays a lot more, the nfl has a lot shorter careers and less trade activity overall.

Blaming the GMs is reductive and incorrect. GMs will use whatever tool they can to sign a player and prevent them signing with another team. It needs to be regulated.

Disagree here are the mean salaries.
NBA $11.9 million
NFL $5.2 million
MLB 4.0 million
NHL $3.9 million
Even closer when we look at the median salaries
National Basketball Association ) NBA $6.3 million
NFL $1.2 million
MLB $1.3 million
NFL 1.2 million
Not much different in three legues! It cripples a team like Detroit and Winnipeg when a player that wants out and has a no trade clause it cripples the team

Easy solution would be if you request to be traded ur NMC Shoudl automatically be waved or changed into a 10 team list. These American players have really abused it. I have no problem with a player who wants to make sure he gets stability but when you abuse your clause to request a trade it doesn’t sit right by me especially when everyone’s clause looks the exact same “Florida, vegas and Minnesota”.
Also Gary should be looking at a way to get around the tax disadvantage. He really ignores it but it’s a huge deal. I remember seeing something like Sam Reinhart makes more than Auston Matthews despite a 4 1/2 million dollars difference in AAV. I also wouldn’t blame a player not wanting to lose half their salary due to taxes…

Players that asked to be traded should be required to negotiate new contracts with their new team. They shouldn't be allowed to sign a sweet deal with one team and then ask for a trade.

Hockey players value stability more. They routinely shoot themselves in the foot when bargaining, but they'll fight hard to keep NTCs and fully guaranteed contracts.
The other leagues pay generally better money, especially for star players, at the expense of control and stability for the players.
Considering the average length of a professional hockey career, I don't blame them for wanting some amount of control over their lives.

NHL has a hard salary cap, significant parity, and places greater importance on depth players.
Means lots of teams without cash flexibility are competing over lots of players in the hopes that it will put them over the edge, NMCs are a way teams can make more competitive offers without going over the cap.
