IMAGE Has anyone taken the Ferry to travel to work?

I currently live in Suffolk and I use my bike to get to where I need to be for now until I can afford to get my car fixed. When I search the directions on Google maps I see that it’s shpwing me that I’m gonna have to get on a ferry in order to make it to Norfolk if I’m traveling by bike.

Has anyone had to do this before and is it easy to get on the ride?

Did anyone else hear the 104.5 Radio Disturbance??

At around 7:10am, I was on the road and listening to the radio. There was a was a woman speaking about homecoming weekend. She made a statement saying that we survived homecoming weekend and spoke about her son breifly. Then randomly, I start to hear a mean yelling. It wasn’t normal yelling though, it sounded like he was in serious pain. The type of yelling was very disturbing to be and I was very confused. Another man came in and asked what was going on and the yelling man replied and told that he was stuck in a glass box. He began yelling again and then it just cut back to the woman talking about homecoming. I’m not sure if the frequencies blended together or what but I’m just wondering if anyone else heard this?? I think I’d be able to sleep better knowing exactly what that was.

IMAGE Ticket resellers are causing chaos at box offices in Hampton Roads. Arts organizations want lawmakers to step in.

Arts organizations across Hampton Roads report an increase in third-party ticket resales that leave patrons paying steep markups and facing customer service issues at venues.

Representatives from the Virginia Opera, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Hampton Arts and Virginia Stage Co. say that third-party sellers frequently fail to transfer registration details, missing critical show updates and venue information for buyers.

Officials say the problem has intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic because of digital ticketing, often leading frustrated patrons to misplace blame on local box offices.

IMAGE No one filed to run in a special Isle of Wight election. What happens now?

Post image

Isle of Wight County voters will see an empty line instead of candidate names for the District 1 school board seat this election season following the recent resignation of former board member Brandi Perkins.

Because the resignation occurred so close candidate filing deadlines, no one could submit paperwork to get their name on the ballot.

Three candidates previously considered for temporary appointment — retired school finance official Jeff Ryder, civil engineer Greg Brown and nonprofit director Candy Hayes — are now actively running write-in campaigns.

Recommendations for event DJs?

Hello! Planning a wedding and I have a long list of local DJs I've been provided, but I wanted to get real recommendations. We have a very good sense of the list of music we want played, we might even provide a pretty full playlist, so priorities really are around someone who can take that and curate a great energy through the party. Our wedding will also have an afterparty at a second location, and we are highly considering a combination of DJ+Karaoke for this, so any recs for folks who can accommodate that are greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

Short-term furnished rentals near downtown Norfolk?

My brother will be in Norfolk for a few months for work, and everything he has found for short-term furnished rentals near downtown is either an extended-stay hotel or an apartment that requires a year-long lease. There has to be something in between for a few months without committing to a year. He has mainly been looking at Ghent and downtown. Are those good areas for someone staying temporarily who wants walkability and restaurants? He need to be close enough to base that the commute is manageable.

good afternoon! just a reminder that if you need any help with any household chores, cleaning, pet sitting, babysitting, etc, please let me know!

we sign the lease this week & move into our new place next week. unfortunately, i’m still roughly $200 short on the first months rent (needed to move in) & my check won’t come in time to make up the difference for that week. i have paid the security deposit though! this is my first place on my own & with an 11/01 move out date, i can’t afford to lose this opportunity! i had no idea what we were going to do until i got the call for this place last week.

i have always been a hard worker & have no problems earning it myself. just scrambling trying to figure this out. we are already moving into a basically empty home but, as long as we have a roof over our heads, i am okay!

please, please reach out if there is anything i can do! i am pregnant with a high risk pregnancy & due in 3 months so, cannot do any heavy lifting. i have a special needs toddler so, i need to be home by 7pm for bedtime as well. & i do work a full time job so, i just have to work around my hours.

tysm for reading! 🫶

IMAGE Is nuclear fusion the future of energy in Virginia? Some officials think so.

Post image
17 Upvotes

Fusion has long been considered the “Holy Grail” of energy, able to potentially supply boundless electricity without producing climate-warming emissions or leaving behind radioactive waste.

It’s a nuclear reaction that powers the sun. It’s the opposite of fission, which powers traditional nuclear plants. Those plants split atoms apart to create energy, whereas fusion combines atoms.

But it’s proven incredibly difficult to achieve on Earth.

Scientists, students, government officials and local leaders gathered at William & Mary Friday to discuss how to bring the industry closer to reality.

WHRO News spoke with organizers of the Virginia Fusion Symposium: Saskia Mordijck, associate physics professor at William & Mary; Lane Carasik, associate professor of nuclear engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University; and Sean Agnew, professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Virginia.

I'm a local renter, looking for advice from landlords/home-owners

I got very lucky when I rented my house. It was right at the rent hike. I pay $1140 for a 900 sq ft home. I have been looking into buying a home and I can't do it. I don't hate my home now, but the fear of them wanting me to leave to make more money worries me.

So I'm thinking about making a proposal to them, that in exchange for a long term lease and maybe a rent freeze, I would be willing to replace the carpeting in the home. All of it. There is some structural damage that I also want to address in the proposal. The wall above my backdoor is "falling" I can't close the back door. They would need to handle that. The house is far from in great shape. But it's nice enough, and has a huge fenced yard for my dog.

In this economy, I'm finally able to make it on my own. I don't want to go back to being broke and housing is a huge part of it.

IMAGE In closing weeks of campaign, Rep. Jen Kiggans stumps with HHS Secretary RFK Jr. in Virginia Beach

Post image

U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans (R) and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. held a closed-door roundtable with medical professionals at the Regional Health Professions Center at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach.

Afterwards, they spoke briefly with reporters, where Kennedy blamed Pennsylvania officials for six deaths from an ongoing measles outbreak.

“They were politicizing the outbreak there. They didn't want our aid. They told us that they didn't want help from the Trump administration,” Kennedy said.

Kiggans is locked in a tight race with former Democratic Congresswoman Elaine Luria in Virginia’s Second Congressional District. The incumbent Republican has brought in several high ranking members of the Trump administration, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz and Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins.

Virginia’s Second District has one of the highest percentages of veterans and active duty military of any district in the United States. Kiggans is a former Navy helicopter pilot while Luria is a former surface warfare officer.

Kiggans defeated Luria in 2022 in the midterm election under President Joe Biden. A Christopher Newport University poll released this week shows Luria with a three point lead, which is within the poll’s margin of error.

Also in the race are independents J. Matt Baker and Bishop Staten.

IMAGE Virginia boosting guidelines for environmental justice when permitting projects

Post image

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has released draft guidance urging developers to evaluate and address the cumulative environmental justice impacts of proposed projects on low-income communities and communities of color.

The updated framework applies to facilities such as landfills, power plants and data centers. It uses a new methodology that combines census data, greenhouse gas emissions and existing industrial stressors.

To mitigate identified risks, the state recommends applicants provide local compensation or redesign, relocate or scale back projects.
