👋 Welcome to r/Hasselt - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hallo iedereen,

  • Leven in Hasselt: wonen, werken, verhuizen, mobiliteit, buurten, praktische vragen
  • Foto's & geschiedenis: mooie plekjes, oude beelden, verhalen over vroeger

I recently moved to Hasselt, and I need to plan a work dinner for my colleagues on Monday. Does anyone have any suggestions of places we can go in Hasselt or the surrounding areas with parking nearby? I will need to make a reservation for 10 people. Please help! Thank you!

  • ±€320/maand, alles inbegrepen (incl. btw, wifi, nutsvoorzieningen, poets, …).

Moving to hasselt, any tips?

Hello , i’m moving to hasselt and will be working in sint truiden , i am still waiting for my work permit but it should be ready by end of october and if everything is good with visa i should be in belgium by mid november, i’m expected to start work in december , meanwhile i will be living in a temporary house provided by the company for two weeks.
So as you can see i still don’t have a final date in which i will come and i’m at the same time looking for rent , which advice would you give me regarding securing rent in those two weeks should i contact them from now or wait until beginning of november? How do visits work please?
Also do you know affordable addresses to buy furniture (bed , mattress, sofa etc…) are those in marketplace reliable ?
Thank you very much !

Meet people

Hi everyone!

I moved to Hasselt to continue my studies and I would like to meet new people since I will be here for a while.
I’m in Belgium for a few years now, so I’ve been studying Dutch but I still don’t feel comfortabel to interact with people, that’s why I was wondering if someone has tips or know places to meet international people.
My first language is Spanish, I know that in Brussels there are some Spanish comunities, is there something like that in Hasselt or nearby?

Thank you!

Taking the train at night

Hey guys. I’m planning on going somewhere but I’d have to take a train at night and arrive pretty late in Hasselt station (12:00-01:00). I am a young women, would it be safe? I’d get picked up there but do you think it’s too unsafe or not. I’ve heard a lot of bad stories about Hasselt having violence / dangerous ppl at night and I’m just a bit scared :/

The visitor centre in the Begijnhof gatehouse opened this weekend

The visitor centre in the gatehouse of Begijnhof opened today, free, with info panels, audio stories and small tasks for kids. There are more listening points spread through the garden as well.

The new tower is 30m, built from 130,000 bricks, and the height is deliberate, the same as the St Catherine's church that was bombed in 1944. Its hexagonal shape comes from the old church's stair tower. And the architects apparently were the only ones in the 2018 competition who proposed leaving the ruin as a ruin instead of rebuilding the church.

Not the best day for a visit and opening today to the rain, unfortunately, but should definitely be worthy a visit any other time with food weather.

I wrote a longer version for visitors over on r/BelgiumTravel with the opening hours and practical details, in case it's useful.
