Working on Aleph Bet Calligraphy and my wife pointed to "Shin" and told me that it was her favorite letter. I wrote her name "Shela Miriam." The stick figure is a "Shin stretch" honoring the guided stretches that my wife helps her massage therapy clients with. The interpretation of Shin reflects my wife's personality and spiritual beliefs.

As a native English speaking Jew with Dyslexia, I’ve never been able to read Hebrew. Could someone please translate the Hebrew on these platters? I found them at the thrift store and thought they would be perfect for shabbos.

Does anyone know what this says? Is it a quote? I can’t even tell what some of the letters are (because they’re so poorly done)

A alguien le interesaría ayudarme en mi hebreo?

Hablo poco y tengo vocabulario básico, hablo español y quiero hablar hebreo con fluidez pero no soy nativo ni vivo en Israel.

Así que busco un compañero o compañera que me pueda ayudar a hablar.

Me pueden contactar por Discord si es que quieren hablar conmigo :3

I am F (24), looking for an Israeli language partner to help me learn Hebrew. I come from Germany and am at the beginning of my Gijur. I always go to the community on Fridays for Schabbat. I'm really still a complete beginner, and just can't get any further learning the Alef-bet.

Among other things, I love Jewish cuisine, Hebrew music and the warmth of Israeli culture

I would prefer it if you also know some German, and are a native Hebrew speaker.
I would be grateful for any help, and maybe a friendship will also arise from this. I hope this is the right sub for this

Schabbat Schalom🤍

My name is Samuel, and I'm a hobbyist learning about Semitic languages, so apologies if this is basic.

I've learned that the biblical vocalization is something like Shemuel, with a quick vowel at the start, and modern Hebrew shortens it to Shmuel. I also read that the Greek Septuagint writes it Samouēl, which seems to suggest a fuller vowel there at some point. And I've seen that "El" may have been pronounced more like "il" at earlier stages.

So my questions are:
What's the best guess for how it sounded back in Samuel's era? Something like Shamuʾil?

Is there any way to know the first vowel, or is that mostly guesswork?

Any accessible reading on how Hebrew pronunciation changed over time?

The guy makes himself out to be Hitler but is Israeli and speaking Hebrew so I assume it's some sort of satire but not sure at all since don't speak much Hebrew at all.

If anyone could help would be very appreciated! :)

How did I do?

Hello,

I would like to share an interesting free event taking place on Thursday, October 22nd, at the Gelber Centre in Montreal and live on Zoom with 2026 Canadian Jewish Literary Award Winner, translator, and Harvard professor Adi Mahalel.

This event will discuss Mahel's scholarship and his publication of the first ever English translation from Yiddish of the controversial novel Boom & Chains by Hanan Ayalti.

Due to its explicit portrayal of class struggles, political disillusionment, and ethnic tensions, Ayalti published the novel in Yiddish instead of Hebrew in 1936, anticipating that it would be deemed too controversial for Hebrew literary circles of the time. Boom & Chains offers a deeply nuanced, rarely seen perspective on early 20th-century kibbutz life.

Here is the registration link:

Hi, could anyone help me recognise this letter? I marked a few of its appearances in the text with a purple arrow. The text isn't mine, it's just an example

I've been writing ך in a similar way for the past few months, but now I think it may be ק, and I'll need to change it:/

Hi!

Both words translate to my native tongue the same (to study/учиться). Could you please provide examples on when I would use one over the other?

Hello, everyone.

I’m Brazilian and I’m looking for a children’s cartoon called “לוֹטִי דּוֹטִי מִינִי.” It was a Brazilian cartoon that was dubbed into Hebrew in 2018, but the original videos have been made private and are now considered lost media. Can anyone help me if they have any archived episodes? I’d really appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

Are these sentences actually used in real life???

Hi! We’re deciding on our son’s Hebrew name and would love your insight. We’re torn between:

1. שלמה (Shlomo) = 375
2. נהר שלמה (Nahar Shlomo) = 630

With patronymics:

• שלמה בן ברוך גבריאל = 901 (Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel)
• נהר שלמה בן ברוך גבריאל ולאה = 1198 ( Nahar Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel V'Leah)

His English name means “river,” so Nahar would mirror it. His second name will be Solomon.

Is there anything meaningful about these values, or about adding Nahar to Shlomo?

Any connections to other words or verses with the same gematria?
Thank you!

Hello everyone. I wanted to take the next step in my career so I need to learn Hebrew in order to do so.

Does anyone know a good school or recommended courses in Zurich that I could join in order to learn Hebrew? I'd need it to be in after work hours. My level is total beginner.

Tnx
