North Uist Trip | Last week of May

I’m visiting North Uist during the last week of this May with my partner. Unfortunately I’m still recovering from an ankle sprain, so the more active aspects of the holiday are ruled out.

This will be my fourth time on the island and every time I leave thinking I should’ve made more of a conscious effort to spot wildlife, although plenty of animals have introduced themselves without much effort on my part already (sea eagles, porpoises etc!).

This time round I’d love to see as much wildlife as possible: sea eagles, basking sharks, dolphins, otters, anything really. I’ve got a decent pair of binoculars, enough patience, but one unreliable ankle.

Does anyone have suggestions for good wildlife spotting locations or drives where you don’t need to walk too far? We’ve got a car, so getting about isn’t a problem.

And if you have any other suggestions about things to do that don’t require a lot of walking - absolutely anything, not picky!

Thanks! :)

I was travelling in the Hebrides last year and met the owner of Wild Harris. Didn't end up going out kayaking with them because of calendar issues but she was very accommodating (I'm a wheelchair user) and lovely. I think kayaking would be a good option, and if you don't want to travel to Harris to do it with them, surely there are other companies closer to you.

There are some good boat trips: https://www.ladyannewildlifecruises.co.uk/ from Grimsay or https://www.uistseatours.co.uk/ from Eriskay. I've been on the latter and they are good value, and the skippers know what wildlife is about and where to find it. But in my experience in Uist, you don't have to go searching, it comes to you!
