Had my first brew day in 364 days, my first double brew day. Finally made the Can You Brew It version of Hobgoblin brown ale, but split between Verdant and Windsor. Also brewed a yellow lager split between Novalager and E-30 hoping to find an estery dry lager yeast.

Oh, I am so looking forward to hearing tasting notes on this one!

Have you used either of the lager strains? All beers are done fermenting and are settling out, but during fermentation E-30 was blowing a little sulphur like you’d expect a lager strain to do, while Nova just kind of smelled slightly sweet. Curious if Nova ends up apple-y and E-30 banana-y like they’re supposed to.

I used Novalager, split with S-23, and found it to be estery comparable to a pseudo lager made with US-05. I don’t recall it being apple-y, which I would remember because it would make me think of Bud and ethyl hexanoate. So it was probably generically fruit-estery like ethyl acetate. Never used E-30 and I only recently even learned about it.

They’re not truly ready for comparison yet, but E-30 I don’t get banana from, or really anything yet other than some normal lager sulphur (kinda disappointing, I was hoping for more). Nova on the other hand is tough to pin down other than sweet and subtly eclectically fruity? With no sulphur of course. I could probably convince myself of apple but it’s definitely more than that, yet it’s nondescript like juicy fruit gum at the same time. I’ll give it a few weeks before posting.
If people who think lagers must be ester-free enjoy Nova… this has way more going on than most non-Belgian ale strains I swear. There is no way I would think this was a “lager” going in blind.
To add: with E30 I easily pick up a bass almost toasty note in the beer, but Nova makes it too sweet to pick that out.

Several of my brews are nearing completion, and I have too few carboys and too few bottles. Mead, wine and cider going on, and I'm itching to start something new before I've even tasted any of them, they're not even clearing yet. I was thinking a pitch black bochet braggot might be worth a try. Get some DME, and figure out what hops pairs with caramelized honey. I've never even done a beer kit recipe before.
Deep breaths... calm down. Maybe plan ahead this time.
