I’m glad I got all my hardware together before direct imports became unaffordable and companies started to collapse due to tariffs, fuel costs, and inflation. I think the next two years will be historically dark times for this hobby.

It’s the declining popularity of beer among the general public coupled with a growing economic holocaust that will result in an effective extinction event for many of our favorite brands and home brew stores. It’s hard to watch.

Health reasons or just different tastes?

If the economy gets bad enough it may come back!

When I started brewing 30 years ago there was an argument that it was cheaper.   Home brewing is not a cheap hobby any more; it is expensive enough that opting out becomes a real option.

Not quite your scale but I just pulled my kegerator back out of storage and reconditioned it for seltzer…

If it all collapsed,, hobbies will be the least of our worries.

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to endure gas lines and hyperinflation without beer.

Right?! If it gets bad enough prison wine and homebrewing will make a comeback!

The economy is in a strange good news/bad news place. But the consumption rate is all bad news for breweries and the brewing hobby. Legal pot has really eaten into alcohol overall. Sure tariffs hurt but they aren't the cause. The decline started long before 2024. Look at the lhbs closures and even the big online guys were closing their brick and mortar outlets.

The company explicitly stated that it was tariffs, shipping costs, and inflation that led to the decision to stop production. I wish it were just the consumption issue.

Also, what is mixed about these metrics:

  • Consumer sentiment hit the lowest reading in history May 2025
  • US public debt reached a record level of $31 trillion
  • Federal government debt hit a record level of $35 trillion
  • Diesel hit a record $6.29/gallon in Sep 2026
  • Corporate bankruptcies surged to record levels in 2025
  • Inflation accelerated to 3.5% in June 2026
  • Job growth slowed sharply over the past 2 years
  • Bilchmann driven out of business for the first time since Big Bang

The economic decline started right around 2024.

Surviving a homebrewing decline is difficult. Surviving a homebrewing and economic decline simultaneously is impossible.

Ohh, they got shipping, I'm 100% bidding on this and going to see what I get.

The main Blichmann site now redirects to More Beer, which it didn't earlier this week.

Im actually surprised by how little inventory they have.

More than likely tariffs spooked them from ordering a restock. This is going to be more common here as on hand inventory starts running out for all kinds of brands.

It looks like it's all the extra stuff Blichmann had from over the years like scratch and dent, returns, test equipment, etc... The main Blichmann page now redirects to More Beer and the normal stuff is up.

Sucks man. Blichmann bought by more beer, Spike is being sold, SS Brewtech closed. Lots of cool businesses i've supported are going under or changing ownership.

I guess for now I'll go back to spike if I need something new because they're still around? I dunno. I bought some stuff from Brewtech in their clearance. I feel bad and hope someone buys them up and gets their guys working in the space again.

There are some interesting kettles/systems listed, but it's not clear what the capacity is on all of them.

Oh No...need to find a spare gasket for my F3 14 Gallon fermenator...anyone know if the G series work?

1

u/BartholomewSchneider 29d ago

I’d like to know where I can get one for my G4 14gal. It’s fine now, but eventually it will need to be replaced. I doubt these fermenters will continue to be manufactured.

u/Grunge_Days 29d ago

Maybe.... I hope a source comes up for consumable parts that wear like the main seal. I have plenty of the o-rings, and those are easy to get from McMaster Carr (I got a bag of each when I bought my fermenator).

u/BartholomewSchneider 29d ago

McMaster Carr! If you can’t find it anywhere, you can find it there. An old engineer once told me, “whatever you are thinking about, someone else has already thought about it, and you can probably find it at McMaster Carr!”

It should be noted that the buyer has to pay 15% more than they bid and probably sales tax on top of that.

Also, you don't get to know shipping costs ahead of time.

If the hobby was growing, this would be a goldmine for LHBSs. Perhaps the online retailers will come away with some wins.

Buying a bunch of E-O-L stuff with no future support seems a little iffy.

u/adroc 29d ago

I would probably steer clear of the electronic components but not much can go wrong with a ss kettle.

u/schulzr1993 29d ago

I'm definitely looking at those 55-Gallon kettles. While I don't need one that large for brewing, it would be great to have for wool dyeing

2

u/Hobby_Homebrew 29d ago

Yeah I looked it over. I don't see anything for us.

6

u/BrokeAssBrewer 29d ago

Catch 22. If the hobby was growing they wouldn’t be in such a situation.

3

u/BartholomewSchneider 29d ago

There’s not much on there.

Great. plastic fermenters with no future parts/support.

The blank 55 gal stainless pots are interesting though.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a Brew Commander and have it shipped if I won. There is no disclosure (that I found) about the shipping costs. For all I know I could be paying $70 to have something shipped to me that I won for 20 bucks. And if you do win you can not back out.
