And immediately label posts as "Misleading," "False information" "missing important context" "False equivalency" etc..
The labels could even cover the whole post, and ask that you make a choice to view the post despite being misleading before exposing the post.
If this century has taught us anything, it's that the majority of people are too dumb to separate fact from fiction. We are addicted to simple narratives, memes, our own echo chambers.
People will always use the defence "it's free speech!"
Well okay. Keep having your free speech. Keep posting your gaslighting meme about how Trump actually lowered gas prices, or stopped 50 wars or whatever.
But if it's dishonest, it must, by law, be labelled by an AI trained on credible, factual sources of information.
Why is this important?
It's in the national interest. It is necessary to protect democracy.
The other thing this century is teaching us is that our collective minds (not yours, I'm sure..) are highly vulnerable to manipulation campaigns by foreign agents. I think even the best of us can be caught off guard every once in a while.
Russian bot farms exist for a reason. They work. People in Russia are getting paid to flood our social media pages with highly sharable disinformation, memes smearing the other side based on lies in order to serve their political interests.
The Social media revolution has been too much change too quickly. And it has created enormous vulnerabilities in our democracies. Countries like China know this, therefore set strict rules about who can and can't post about certain topics amongst other safeguards.
I say AI because there are obviously too many posts for humans to vet. AI is getting more and more sophisticated every year and this could be an important application much to the benefit of society.
