serious hot take Referring to AI/LLMs as 'Super Intelligence' makes you sound unintelligent and like a Trump supporter.

This evening, my university had an event with a guest speaker in our Department of Economics (of which I am an undergraduate student). While the guest speaker and the department chair were having a conversation on stage, naturally, the subject turned to the prevalence of AI/LLMs and the speaker began to refer to it as 'super intelligence.'

The first time it was said, it felt abrasive. I sat up in my chair a little bit.

Then the two of them just... kept saying it! And it kept bothering me!

I remember when Trump announced that he wanted people to start referring to AI/LLMs as 'super intelligence,' my only thought was "this is ridiculous, it sounds stupid, and nobody is going to do this." Why is this catching on with these evidently serious and successful people?

serious hot take I really dont care if a person is filming themselves in public

Reddit acts like a person (usually a woman) filming themselves in public is the absolute worst thing ever and how it makes them horrible and conceited and how much of a drain they are on society and etc etc, they always get REALLYY uptight about it. I just dont get it. being in the background of a video im probably never going to see doesn't matter to me whatsoever and 99.9% of the time they arent remotely in my way.

People need to learn how to write short.

Nobody wants to read anything you write. Whenever I see a giant block of text, it says you don't care about me or my time or experience as a reader.

Cut filler words. When you talk to people, filler words are verbal pause to think about what you are going to say next. When you write, you have time to think about what you want to say so use it.

Write short sentences. Run on sentences are a pain in the ass to read through. If you are going to just rant in a post or comment, im downvoting it.

People who speed in towns often don’t understand math.

I get that on a long trip, going fast saves a lot of time. In town, it generally just means you wait at red lights longer because here they are timed.

Where I live, speed fines are doubled in school zones. The school zone is 1/10th of a mile long. Maybe a $350 ticket for going 15 over.

At 20 MPH (the speed limit) that is 18 seconds to cross.

At the absurd speed of 200 mph, it’s 1.8 seconds.

The odds are REALLY high you’ll have to stop or get stuck in traffic in that school zone.

No matter how fast you go, you can likely only shave 16 seconds. How big of a hurry is that?

TL/DR speeding only makes mathmatical sense on open roads.

Social media should have mandated AI fact checking on every post and picture

And immediately label posts as "Misleading," "False information" "missing important context" "False equivalency" etc..

The labels could even cover the whole post, and ask that you make a choice to view the post despite being misleading before exposing the post.

If this century has taught us anything, it's that the majority of people are too dumb to separate fact from fiction. We are addicted to simple narratives, memes, our own echo chambers.

People will always use the defence "it's free speech!"

Well okay. Keep having your free speech. Keep posting your gaslighting meme about how Trump actually lowered gas prices, or stopped 50 wars or whatever.

But if it's dishonest, it must, by law, be labelled by an AI trained on credible, factual sources of information.

Why is this important?

It's in the national interest. It is necessary to protect democracy.

The other thing this century is teaching us is that our collective minds (not yours, I'm sure..) are highly vulnerable to manipulation campaigns by foreign agents. I think even the best of us can be caught off guard every once in a while.

Russian bot farms exist for a reason. They work. People in Russia are getting paid to flood our social media pages with highly sharable disinformation, memes smearing the other side based on lies in order to serve their political interests.

The Social media revolution has been too much change too quickly. And it has created enormous vulnerabilities in our democracies. Countries like China know this, therefore set strict rules about who can and can't post about certain topics amongst other safeguards.

I say AI because there are obviously too many posts for humans to vet. AI is getting more and more sophisticated every year and this could be an important application much to the benefit of society.

casual hot take The Babygirl movie is unironically super trash. Like what’s even the point.

Ok so I’m a professional hate watcher of modern romance, they are so bad it’s funny. But this movie just makes no sense. The ending is so bad, she cheats, cucks husband with some genius kid with a smoking addiction on par with Lip from Shameless with an unknown motivation to basically dog train his CEO boss out of nowhere on his first day of work. And then cuck husband takes her back and at the end and does what the dude did earlier in the movie and she gets off, but what the fuck is even the point I thought she got off on power play not cuck play so the ending made no sense to me. It’s not like her husband just became what the young dude was lol. And then young dude figures out how many balls fit in a room in two seconds and that was the most of his intelligence we saw. Then this black dog comes out of nowhere at the end. CEO woman was in the same position in the beginning as she was in the end, no change. No point, no learning, no inspiration just a weird story of some dude taking back his cheating wife. Anyways this is why I only read early 1900s romance.

Movies trash that’s my take, the plot is nonsensical.

serious hot take if you watch the “teen” porn category you are a disgusting pedo and you would go younger than 18 if you were legally allowed to

i mean im not gonna type multiple paragraphs i said what i said but the older men who enjoy this type of porn are disgusting creeps and i think they would go for underage girls if it was allowed. i dont think any teen should be making porn content even 18 and 19 year olds and i feel like any teen who does that is being groomed. i searched “girls” on reddit trying to find a womens community and all the first things that popped up were porn subs, which is misogynistic on its own but the first one was “teen girls” lewd subreddit. do so many people seek that content that its the first thing to pop up? disgusting

Tipping for a service you’ve yet to receive is a scam

DoorDash is the biggest offender. I’m supposed to set a tip before I received food? I remember tipping well for an order and it’s just some guy, and they don’t care, at all. And it’s subpar service on a good tip. That’s rightfully upsetting.

So you’re dammed all ways with the drivers. You don’t tip up front, good luck getting your order. You change the tip after because they were genuinely awful? It’s kind of scummy, even if it’s deserved.

No winning here. Tipping at a restaurant? Ok. Haircut? Fine. That makes sense. Doordashers are the lowest skilled with the most entitlement, and I’ll say it even though I drove for DoorDash during covid.

gender Ppl are still crazily obsessed with women's bodies just in a different form

And it's wayyy more people than we'd want to admit. I'll admit it, as a woman I am too heavily influenced by whatever is shown on the internet that people consume and start pushing onto real life.

I wanna say "who cares" in real life because that seems like a very obvious thing however it is just not. People do care whether or not iconic brands like Victoria Secret starts having plus size models and suddenly even women gang up to argue against it as if it's not damn bras.

People do care if you're a famous person and you appear slightly bigger/smaller at an event and suddenly they know everything that goes in your life.

People do care if you just posted a video and your skinny leg got in the frame, how dare you be skinny you're body checking!

People still do care about Eugenia Cooney even tho she shouldn't be a public person at all given her fucked up influence on young girls.

People do care if you're 2000's skinny enough to wear low rise jeans again.

People do care what shape your belly is, how you look postpartum, what shape your vagina is, how thick your hips are, how glossy and perfect your skin is and the shape of your bones and muscles.

And much more than that, that's just what I could think of from the top of my head. It still lurks into people's daily life if you use the internet like almost everyone does.

What I mean by "different form" is that the amount of insecurities that big companies and influencers profit off of has tripled in its amount pointing out the smallest things nobody gave a shit about and it's all in young girls heads now, as well as how horrible men are also catching up on this to widen their list of what a "perfect woman" is physically in their heads.

I wonder if we will ever get out of that.

serious hot take Religion started as a cult (Christianity)

hear me out, i really think religion started as a cult. But it got too big that it became the social norm and ppl who dont believe their "norm" is shunned. Take me for an example i was born into a devout christian family and am being shunned, yelled for not believing god, like its very unrealistic. A guy who created everything from thr beginning to the end? very unlikely. I think ppl couldnt comprehend everything (the universe) so they made someone/something to believe so they wont go crazy, and those who question them are wrong. So they teach their children and it went on for generations that it became the social norm.

casual hot take Burgers shouldn't come with fries and should always come with fruit juice

• Upvotes

I'm referring to a combo deal. Most burger spots offer a burger, fries and a pop drink as a combo deal but in my opinion this makes 0 sense.

First off, the burger and fries duo. WHY????? WHY WOULD YOU COMBO BURGER WITH FRIES???? Not only do the 2 foods have no correlation with each other, but actually have anti synergy because both leave you thirsty. They don't complement each other at all.

So you might be thinking: this is where the pop drink comes in, right? WRONG! Fizzy drinks actually make you thirstier. I saw this somewhere but I CBA to find the source again so you're gonna have to take my word for it. So you have 3 items that just make you thirstier and thirstier but for some reason this is the big 3 of burger combo items.

Now imagine this: you take a couple bites into a delicious juicy burger, but the fat leaves you a bit thirsty. So instead of those salty fucking fries or that can of pop that makes you thirstier for no reason, you have a nice refreshing glass of freshly squeezed mango juice. It also helps you cool down from the heat, if the burger is spicy, which adds another layer of synergy.

Edit: it's the sugar not the carbonation

Edit 2: apparently it's not. There's probably another reason, vonsidering it's higher on the beverage hydration index

casual hot take Gambling advertising should be banned

Outside of charity lotteries/raffles, actually advertising a gambling service should be illegal. I'm not saying gambling as a whole should be, but with how fun and interesting they make it sound and the near constant ads I would be surprised if it wasn't responsible for creating the current generation of addicts.

serious hot take Music fans are the most disrespectful fanbase.

You know those DJ videos where there's like a dozen people all in their business touching stuff? In what world is that ok? If someone was out busking with a $4000 violin or saxophone, nobody would be in their face touching their instruments. That's a $4000 instrument. Well those turntables are also $3000 dollars, and \*objectively\* more sophisticated.

If you break a string or reed, it's $20, you replace it and the show continues. Someone spills their drink on your console or thinks they're being funny and flicks a fader, that's thousands of dollars gone.

Its like the more contemporary the music, the more acceptable it is to be a jerk. Image you went to a concert hall and there were just 30 people in the front, fighting and yelling at the performers. Those people would be crazy. But if it was rock concert or pop singer? Totally normal. Nobody should be near the stage ever. Nobody does that at a movie or other type of show. Why's it ok at a concert?

gender Dating trans people is just as dignified as dating anyone else and is neither better nor worse, but a niche

I feel obligated to do this because I see a growing number of posts inflating the egos of trans people. They are people just like anyone else.

You can express admiration or disdain, but the fact is that they are human beings capable of love and have the right to love whomever they reciprocate. So the idea that "trans women are better to date," as another post suggests, is simply false.

It's a niche. We are all worthy people, but we are not worse or better, just options within the range of other people. There are people who will agree to be with us, there are people who will disagree. Just grow up and get out of the 4tran

Btw, stop declaring yourselves gay or lesbian; that's not for you. Do I really need to explain why? Let's grow up and create our own circles instead of crying and projecting our frustrations onto others

casual hot take Being average is not an insult. People just hate being reminded that they aren't exceptional.

Post image
30 Upvotes

Being average is not an insult. People just hate being reminded that they aren't exceptional.

I think a lot of people's frustration with life comes from the inability to accept being average. They treat it like a personal failure to be of ordinary height, have an ordinary appearance, possess ordinary abilities, or live an ordinary life.

Some people genuinely become depressed over the idea that they're not exceptional, as if being a regular human being were some kind of humiliation. They want to be eight feet tall, look like a Greek god, be admired by everyone, and stand out in every room they enter.

But why? Why is being a normal person so unbearable to you?

I think a lot of people have built their self-worth around the fantasy of being extraordinary. They don't simply want to be happy, competent, or respected; they want to be superior. They want to be the exception, the standard, the person everyone notices. And when reality doesn't match that fantasy, they interpret it as a personal injustice.

I'm not saying people shouldn't improve themselves or pursue ambitious goals. I'm saying there's something deeply unhealthy about needing to be exceptional just to feel that your existence has value.

casual hot take Uber/Lyft drivers shouldn't wear strongly scented cologne/perfume

I'm currently in an uber. The driver is absolutely marinated in nasty cologne. It's hot in here, and his driving is very abrupt and jerky. Getting so nauseated. 🤢 Surprisingly it's not yet bothering my very sensitive-to-scents rhinitis (yet)

Why do people need to douse themselves in this shit? Especially if your job is being in a small enclosed space with people all day.

lukewarm take spoilers are needed regardless of how old the media is (if you’re commenting it on a irrelevant post) Spoiler

ok idk if my title makes sense, so for example—

commenting that a character dies in x movie, while the post was about y movie and the deaths in it.

this is fine, of course,…but they didn’t provide a warning and it was something I wanted to really watch but didn’t have access to. sucks knowing what character will die & completely ruins the twist of finding out authentically.

all in all, comment whatever about whatever, just for the love of everything on planet earth, say you’re gonna spoil it!!!! also lukewarm take bc I’ve seen many different perspectives on this. not sure which flair.

casual hot take White women are NOT the beauty standard.

• Upvotes

Okay maybe this isnt that hot of a take, i genuinely do not know, but i see way too many poc and whites saying ‘white women are privileged because they are the beauty standard‘ or something along those lines. as a white woman, idk why some people have this victim mentality over a white beauty standard when it is almost nonexistent nowadays.

YES, I DO BELIEVE WHITE PRIVILEGE EXISTS. YES, WHITE WOMEN EXPERIENCE WHITE PRIVILEGE.

but when it comes to todays BEAUTY STANDARDS, white women are at a significant disadvantage. as a white woman myself, this is NOT me calling white women ugly. im just pointing out the most important beauty standards are light-skin POC centered for example:

-big asses

-big lips

-tan skin

-upturned thin eyes

yes obviously some beauty standards are white centered such as colored eyes But overall, the modern day epitome of american beauty would be a mixed woman.

if you are over the age of 30-40 you’ll probably disagree with me because you are probably still influenced by beauty standards of your preteen- teenage years. because thats when most women develop an understanding of beauty standards and their own attractiveness level. 20 years ago beauty standards were EXTREMELY white centered!

im an 18 year old girl so I am heavily influenced by modern beauty standards. i am also white. i used to cry in front of the mirror in middle school because I was skinny and pale. i would tan for hour without sunscreen because i just wanted to be dark. I had a workout routine to build my ass since 7th grade. I used to look at the ass of every woman i knew and mentally compare her ass to mine. I used to use face tape to tape my eyes into an upturned shape because they are naturally very round. the latinas and the mixed lightskin women in my school were considered the hottest because they naturally fit all these standards.

overall i’m not saying this stuff to throw a pity party. I don’t want anyone takeaway to be “wow we should make the beauty standard available to these poor white women”. because not every woman can fit the beauty standard and it is meant be exclusive. POC have been excluded from it for thousands of years. im just saying that you would have to be blind to believe that white women are the modern day beauty standard.

serious hot take Posting videos of your children publicly online for content is child abuse.

If you use your children as puppets for your content, it should be considered low level child abuse.

Especially if it’s videos of the kids in emotional distress.
