I never understood this. Why build all the skeleton, muscles and all the layers? Is it just for presentation?

Because muscles will stretch and squash, and the skin on top will follow or slide on the bones and muscles, and simulating an approximation of those interactions gives a more realistic look to CGI beings

Funny, one well known VFX house was making these just for their making of, pretending to have used all of this while the actual character was just rigged without any underlying structure driving skin deformation. Just amusing the things you come across in your career.

So good, really looking forward to getting into Houdini to learn its muscle sim workflow. The learning curve is steep, but wow are the results worth it.

I understand muscle system conceptually when the animal/monster is bald, but it has very little point when you cover them with fur.

It's rare to see a nice turntable submission but this looks really great and professional. Nice work
