Discussion Does Any Data Exist RE: Propeller ON/OFF Rate Limit?

It’s pretty clear to me by this point what I’m dealing with in the Propeller / Juney interaction practically amounts to Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). The footage of the Motor Forward Position in the comments exhibits an alternating ~5Hz pulse / steady ON - and I hypothesize a perfectly concentric setup would eliminate or drastically reduce this alternation.

To me, this data suggests the Propeller is turning ON and OFF about five or six times per second, give or take a bit. I’m now intensely curious if that’s some sort of hard limit. I’m assuming absolute maximum would be the 60Hz framerate.

If this pulse rate can be varied (it clearly can), then Juney Boost thrust calculation might just be a simple measure of the percentage of time Propeller OFF.

Anyhow, curious if data about this exists. If not, mine might be among the first! 😆

I have seen a build in the past that used a "Big Wheel" equipped with a shock emitter to toggle a propeller on and off.

Since the Big Wheel rotates at 42 RPM, some adjustments are necessary to achieve an ideal speed.

The motor runs at 140 RPM, so using two shock emitters results in a frequency of 4.66 Hz.

As I recall, these tests were based solely on the subjective impression that the speed had changed; there was no quantitative data to back it up.

4.66 Hz is suspiciously close to the ~5Hz I’m bumping into on this build. I’m more or less convinced that’s what I’m seeing - that is, a rapid switching ON/OFF of Propeller thrust. The range of Steering Stick inputs to bring it about tends to be very narrow - so its usefulness may be limited; but I’m quite interested in pursuing it, so pursue I shall

It’s funny, I work with PWM all the time; it just didn’t occur to me until today that’s what I’m dealing with in this build 😆
