I know literally everyone that does IB hates how arbitrary TOK is, but I think it's a great way to get easy marks, so here's some tips from someone with a modded 9/10 on their TOK essay!
I wrote on the M26 question [4]: "In the acquisition of knowledge, can we only understand something to the extent that we understand its context?"
(1) Picking a question
Q: Are there "easier" or "harder" questions? Is there any question you should or shouldn't pick?
A: This is a bit of a myth (from my TOK Coordinator who's done it for 10+ years), but there are technically "harder" questions. Obviously, don't pick the questions that involve AOK that you're not familiar with, and make sure you are comfortable with using examples. Our coordinator also mentioned that if the question is '"XYZ claim", do you agree?', then unless you are confident in your writing skills, it is quite dangerous to tackle it.
(2) Coming Up with Examples
DO NOT USE AI. I know that it is tempting, but don't use AI for examples, it genuinely gives you the most overused examples and it's horrid because it is your job to put together a cohesive essay.
Anything can be an example, and if you pick AOK that you are interested in, you can really come up with good ideas. It might seem random at first, but for instance, I used a school of literary analysis in my essay. It is important to know the theories in depth or at least have a lot to say about it.
Mentioning theory, in my opinion, was how I got a high score. Show genuine interest and I feel like it makes a difference, one of my friends wrote on Hatsune Miku I'm pretty sure.
(3) Composing a Good Response
Make sure that you structure the essay in a way that there is active back and forth -- this is why it is so important to to not use AI. Try give it your all and write an argumentative essay, this is the format I used, very simple:
Introduction - include thesis i.e. answer to question
AOK 1: FOR your thesis
AOK 1: AGAINST your thesis (rebut this)
and then rinse and repeat for AOK 2. It's not a long essay, so just make sure that everything is tightly packed.
Good luck!
