How did this nerd even end up on a sub dedicated to answering questions about baseball for new fans?

My guess is they think their opinion is so important and correct that they feel compelled to turn people against sports and the best way to do that is go after those that are just starting out. Spawn camping, essentially.

I love sports actually, I wish to turn people away from hate.

I’m like a shit yoda.

Turn people away from hate, I shall. Like Yoda, I shall be.

.....do they think sports fans genuinely dislike players on rival teams?

Like, there are players I genuinely dislike. But I dislike them because they're awful people, like Deshaun Watson. I don't dislike them because of their socks lmao.

I root against Ronald Acuña Jr. because of his socks color. There's a difference lol.

Even when rooting against a rival team, I think a lot of people can still appreciate and respect the skill and talent of the other players.

I mean, for me, that's part of being a sports fan. It's great if the OKC Thunder go blow up the Jazz by 35 points and all, but it means a lot more when they beat a team with great players like the Spurs or Knicks.

I mean, I think it's pretty clear they do. Look at the way people discuss Ronaldo vs. Messi, or the way fans behave at Manchester derby. I've also seen some properly heated freakouts in online communities.

That’s Europe, though. There’s nothing like that in the proper North American sports world (I’m specifically excluding El Tri for their racist bs though)

You may not hate opposing players, but many people do. Do you know what the football firms in Europe and the UK do to each other at big matches? It’s not exactly peaceful.

That's fair, there are some downright nasty people out there. I guess I just don't associate with those types.

Can you see how your comment may not of been truthful now?

Sure. I can also see how you're a condescending prick now. Piss off, I'm not a child.

That's fan on fan, though. All of them would happily accept a good player from their rival onto their team if it made them better. They hate the other fans, not the players.

At least, this is the picture I get of it from the outside.

The racist and threatening chants the worst of them shout should tell you otherwise.

I’m not sure why this subreddit is trying to push the rhetoric that some people don’t hate the players on the opposing team. It’s almost like you’ve never been to a sports bar or stadium before.

You’re painting with some very broad strokes there, buddy.

I’m something of an ethical impressionist myself.
