The exact same thing can be said about the “best concert pianist in continental Europe”, but somehow I don’t think this person understands that

Hell a lot of sports are less arbitrary. The 100 meters or shot put or long jump aren't arbitrary at all. You run the fastest or throw the thing/jump the farthest and you win

Why is the race 100 meters instead of 90 or 150? Why does the long jump measure horizontal distance rather than vertical height? Why are shot put athletes required to use a specific throwing technique and a standardized weight? Those are all human-created rules with no inherent significance.

psst... they do long jump AND high jump

The shot put’s rules around technique are pretty loose and what exists is there to protect your UCL.

Cartwheel throws were legal until the mid-2000s IIRC, and that’s pretty much the only banned technique.

You can literally measure all of the things you just said objectively as well. What makes you think you can't measure who the fastest 90 meter runner is? You totally can and it'll be just as objective as fastest 100. Hell they literally have long and high jump stats. What's wrong with you lol

You’re literally proving my point. Of course you can objectively measure a 90-meter race. I never disputed that. My argument is that choosing 90 meters over 100 meters is arbitrary. The measurement is objective, but the parameters of the competition are human-defined. There’s no contradiction there. You’re confusing the objectivity of an outcome with the arbitrariness of the rules used to determine it. The fact that you can objectively measure both long jump and high jump only reinforces my argument, since we arbitrarily decided to make horizontal and vertical jumping separate competitions.

If that's the case then the point you're making is just useless even if it's correct and I'm not sure why you said anything at all

The point is that all sports have some arbitrary metrics. Every sport has rules that could be adjusted. The person above said a 100 meter run isn’t arbitrary but it is, because that’s an arbitrary distance. Doesn’t mean anything bad that it’s arbitrary. Instruments have way more arbitrary factors than some sports.

The fundamental is still not arbitrary. Someone better at running marathons quicker is also going to be better at other similar long distances.

And height vs distance in a jump? Both are not arbitrary inherently. Picking one non-arbitrary thing over another non-arbitrary thing is technically arbitrary, but so silly to care about. The choices are each very real.

This is clearly a joke, see eating the ripe plum part

By this logic anyone good at anything that's not the most basic, instinctual survival skills has no reason to brag about anything ever

"why not enjoy a ripe plum"

TELL HER WILLIAM. TELL HER WHY I CAN'T ENJOY MY PLUMS

Ok I’m not mad at this because it’s obvious she’s being self-aware with the “ripe plum” stuff

It’s people who get all serious about it and try to throw salt on everyone else’s good time that I can’t stand

13

u/MisterGreenWinter 3d ago

i don’t think that’s evidence of being self aware based on her replies in the comment section

u/lamstradamus 58m ago

It is funny though isn't it

15

u/Major-Material7231 3d ago

This is definitely a joke

People love to content farm and other people love to be upset for no real particular reason.

Ain't nuthin' new unda' da Sun.

i mean from her comments and from her profile it didn’t seem like much of a joke

7

u/ThePotatoFromIrak 3d ago

Does this mean she supports combat sports? Hitting another man in the face is the most primal thing I can imagine

9

u/Turnepic13 3d ago

What about hitting a ripe plum in the face

1

u/MisterGreenWinter 3d ago

i didn’t save the tiktok, but one of the comments specifically addressed this by saying “i’m the best at fighting someone without being able to kick”

How exactly do you become the best at eating a plum? What are the rules to plum eating?

1

u/SexualMetawhore 2d ago

Pro thunderball is the only sport that matters.

Steve Youngblood DA GOAT

3

u/althawk8357 3d ago

I think this is funny.

u/punkarolla 2d ago

I, too, just learned about post structuralist philosophy for the first time.

Also, plums are shit after the first bite. They go from sweet to awful in seconds.

u/MammothGlum 3d ago

Society has famously never rewarded being the best at a niche skill

3

u/Suitable_Matter_9427 3d ago

How about the most intellectualest poaster

2

u/TheEpiquin 3d ago

Now THAT’S a hotly contested field!

2

u/domlikessports 3d ago

Critical thinking is important and I’ve always thought we need more of it in society, but TikTok millennials and Gen Z/alpha should think less tbh

2

u/its_about_the_cones_ 2d ago

Dude, I’m so fucking good at enjoying a ripe PLUM

1

u/thecatsclause 3d ago

i've never seen someone so angry that someone else is being rewarded for being fit and good at strategy 😭😭

1

u/QueezyF 3d ago

It’s called being competitive.

1

u/itonmyface 3d ago

It’s ok to not understand some things are subjective, others have literal data.

1

u/kevthecoder 3d ago

I mean we kinda have that with the Nathan’s hotdog competition. Joey C is the goat 🐐

1

u/QuarterNote44 3d ago

Something real? Like...not that hair color?

1

u/Sapphfire0 3d ago

Because sports are made up, as opposed to other things that are real?

1

u/lamstradamus 57m ago

Yes like a ripe plum as she said

1

u/discreetarchive 2d ago

Everything is made up you mong

1

u/Patrickracer43 2d ago

Including the plum

1

u/No-Lunch4249 2d ago

This is that pure, unspoilt Sportsballing that I miss. She's just in it for the hate of the game and nothing else. Very reminiscent of the late 00s.

None of this ultra processed factory bot farmed "goybot" and "Bread and Circuses" Sportsballing we get today

1

u/spacetiger41 1d ago

What is the third made-up thing?

-3

u/StabilerDorsch 2d ago

I mean she's right tho. It's not a hostile statement to make.

1

u/MisterGreenWinter 2d ago

how are sports any more arbitrary and nonsensical than literally anything else

0

u/T206Collector 3d ago

I don't know I think Joey Chestnut (or any competitive eater for that matter) would be hard to beat at eating plums
