Discussion What was a comic series that got you hooked on issue 1
Like it didn’t take you a whole volume to get into the series. I’m saying you read the first issue and thought it was so peak that you wanted to read more of it because that first issue was 10/10. For me it was haunt, the darkness 2025, hack/slash, and Dynamo 5

Black Science was the first non-DC/Marvel/basic superheroes comic I ever read and it is still one of my favorite comic runs. I followed that up with East vs West and I'm about to start a reread soon 😄

In the middle of the first Library edition of Black Science. Thing hits you square in the jaw like 3 pages in and just keeps goin. Loving it so far

u/BakaTensai Aug 14 '26
God, it’s so good isn’t it? And the art is just🔥🔥🔥🔥
2
u/YoungSkywalker10 Aug 14 '26
It just throws you right in. I spent the first couple issues catching up to what was going on, but once you know who’s who and the rules of the story, good lord it’s been a blast

Ice Cream Man. It's still the monthly shelf pull that I look forward to most.

u/GimpyPlayerOne Aug 14 '26
Silver Coin, Killadelphia, Black Magick, Ice Cream Man, Nail Bitter, Department of true, Bug Wars, Hyde Street, Geiger, red roots, and Battle Beast to name a few. Also looking forward to Hammerfist, and Chainkata.

Ex Machina and Scalped both have great first issues that will totally hook you on the last page

u/Adventurous_Soft_686 Aug 14 '26
Grommets. As an 80s/90s kid the first issue hooked me with the nostalgia immediately.

Saga, Low, Black Science, Bug Wars, Tokyo Ghost and Ascender/Descender (the artwork just blew me away from the first page.)
2
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
+1 Ascender/Descender - was awesome to get a full series with Dustin Nguyen watercolor art. He deservedly won an Eisner for it. And very cool world-building by Lemire.

u/thetokyofiles Aug 14 '26
“A Righteous Thirst For Vengeance” starts fast and keeps you hooked from the start.

u/Dr_Pepper_spray Aug 19 '26
I disliked this first issue so much I didn't bother reading anything after.

Recently, the first issue Remender's Escape made me go "yeah this is gonna be something special".

u/MiserablePositive934 Aug 14 '26
Lazarus , the Darkness , Gideon Falls , Stray Bullets
2
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
Lazarus was amazing when it first came out. Loved picking these up single issue for awhile, even when they went like quarterly “deluxe” editions. Rucka/Lark combo amazing. And ditto with Gideon Falls - the Andrea Sorrentino art here was so good and so unique, and the Lemire/Sorrentino tag-team was so good. Great storytelling, cool/unique art.

Spawn (yes i am a dinosaur), Dept of Truth, Do a Powerbomb, The recent Skybound Transformers series bit its kinda lost its luster, Exquisite Corpses, Murder Podcast.
There are more but those are the ones i can think of right now.

u/GLG123_ Aug 14 '26
exquisited corpses, still remember the feeling that i felt after finishing the first issue

u/caych_cazador Aug 14 '26
Department of Truth and Chew. lost track of how many times ive re read Chew.

u/luti01 Aug 14 '26
Saga. I had stoped reading cómics for almost a decade due to superhero and event after event burnout, i only read DC and Marvel back then. Then Saga #1 crossed my path, i got drawn just by the cover and was absolutely hooked by the end of the issue. That #1 lead me to EoW, Black Science, Descender, Hellboy and all the amazing cómics i missed before.
2
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
I was late to the Saga boat. But picked it up post-hiatus, in Deluxe Hardcover. Got hooked, and then when it came back, read it in trades. Just bought the 4th DHC just to have it and re-read it. The hiatus really took the momentum out of this book, but it really is/was a great series. And started so well.

I know I’m biased, but when I read the script to Morning Glories #1, it was like lightning in a bottle—I knew it was something special

u/BipolarPrime Aug 15 '26
Me too. I just wish they would have wrapped up what they began for all of us who stuck with it.

Bitter Root and Monstress for me. Both issue #1s were incredible. Unfortunately I ended up falling off Monstress but I stuck with Bitter Root all the way through and was never disappointed.
1
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
Same, I fell off Monstress too after reading it single issue up until the 20s. Stopped after that. Still pickup the trades, but I haven’t read the last 4 vols or so. Fell off, hopefully will pick it up someday and catch-up. But yeah, started absolutely with a bang

Fire Power was fun and beautiful art
2
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
Yes! Also loved this, and read single issue into the teens/twenties. Really loved Kirkman during this period, and followed a lot of his new series post-Walking Dead / Invincible (Fire Power and Oblivion Song)

Oh my gosh, too many to list. One of my more recents has been If Destruction Be Our Lot. Just incredible. Corpse Knight also got me right away.

u/Tastyfishsticks Aug 14 '26
Sin city. I love frank Miller but I didn't think I would like this series. One issue changed my mind.

Deadly Class. Rick Remender and Wes Craig were cooking so hard from the start

Everyone mentioned my most obvious ones: Deadly Class and Black Science. I loved the first issue of East of West for the art and the Hickman data pages.
Shout out to a more obscure one in Outcast and a more recent one in Blood & Thunder. First issue is awesome but it kind of fizzles out.

Rook: Exodus, Geoff Johns's writing and Jason Fabok's art. Give me more! The story and world building hooked me that I have it in singles and also the deluxe hard cover.
1
u/Odd-Fun-4 Aug 15 '26
Good to hear! I bought the DHC when it came out, but haven’t read it yet. Big fan of both Johns and Fabok separately. Heard good things, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. On the list to get to, with DHC on my shelf and took off the plastic wrap!

When Saga first released, MANY moons ago now, it was truly a creative breath of fresh air, unlike anything else on the shelf at that time. I’m extremely biased towards any BKV project, for sure, but combined with Fiona’s art, I was locked in from day one.

Invincible, I know that's the obvious answer right now but I took years off from reading comics. Just kind of slipped away. A coworker suggested the show and I watched the first season then went right back into reading. Got the three compendiums and read them front to back right away. Since then I've been reading super man, various Batman runs, Hellblazer, reread Hellboy, I want to start the og spawn run. Just about done monstress compendium 1. Now I'm up to date on battle beast, absolute Batman, absolute Superman, capes, tech jacket, crossed. 8 billion genies is also a gem. If anyone has any suggestions pleeeeeaaaaase let me know, I love finding finished runs that I can get on a compendium or collections that aren't too pricey

Spawn #1 had me hooked line and sinker, still follow the series, about to read #377!
2
u/BipolarPrime Aug 15 '26
I do like Soawn, and I have all the compendiums and intend to keep getting them, but I have to ask…how did you get through all of the early issues with the rough writing? For me it was Capullo. He was amazing back then, too.
But I kept having to put the book aside for a while, just to digest Todd’s writing.

Feral and Supergirl.
My two favorite comics coming out right now. I’d put Feral at #1, as every issue hooks me more and more.
I think Supergirl would have a better chance to be #1 if it didn’t suffer from all of the DC tie in stuff. Campbell does a great job with all of that, and I do still love it, but the book shines like no other when she’s seemingly not tied to so much from an editorial standpoint. But, hey, if the crossovers help it sell more and she gets to do a longer run because of it, I’m…all in.
This being an Image sub though, I will reiterate that Feral is and has been my favorite Wednesday pull since issue 1.

Radiant Black.
I bought the massive edition book one blind. Read the first issue and stopped because I knew I'd binge it and book two was releasing later. So I waited. Then I got massive edition book two.
Well last night I decided it was time. I re-read issue one...and hours later I finished book one. Now I'm going to start the next twelve issues. It's great!
