Dullahan. Durandal is a Sword (or an OP Mary Sue who gave herself a Codenamed based on the Sword. Depends on wether you play honkai).

Or an utterly insane rampant ai with a god complex and an almost pathological desire to teleport a cyborg around.

Tbf considering how the Iron Hands acted, I don't think they ever believed they had a father either

“Chaplin our primarch is going on a rampage”
“Ah well, drop him off by a chaos world, they’ll be more useful killing Deamons than us”

At least he has a new head to replace the old one.

Ah, so this is now a daemon Ferrus, who needs to replace his rotting head with a head of a dead IH marine... gotcha, gotcha... furiously writes in the notebook

We get a very good idea from the beginning of the book "Wraith of Iron" and he didn't want to "Write off" anyone as other commentis have said. Ferrus wanted to teach his Legion then the folly of their ways before it becane a mania.
You can read the Full quote here
Ferrus was the harsh but fair leader Pertarabo pretended to be and held none of Pertarabo's narcissism. If Ferrus saw the Iron Hands of 40k he would be saddened by it as the direct cause of them. His own failure to live to his ideals is what caused this.
Flying into a rage and murdering his own son's for actions that are his fault is Pertarabo not Ferrus Mannus.

It’s more the fact he was brought back to life in such a horrid way and in a he hated that’s why he’s killing his own sons

We actually see Iron Hands Characters brought back like this in several short stories two of witch "Riven" and "Keys of Hel" are some of my favorites across the entire Horus Heresy.
Particularly in the latter we see a character staunchly against the use of Cybernetic Resurrection end up having it used on him and his only response is
"When does the pain end?" And he is awnsered "When we Awaken no more."
The final line of that story "What are the Keys of Hel. The price of our weakness."

Well, i mean... Didn't Ferrus, canonically, wanted to, so to speak, “write off” his sons when he realized that they were, well, too far gone? But he didn’t do it only because, at the time of the Great Crusade, it wasn’t the best strategy and creating new Legion would be too much time. And he decided to do it later. It just so happened that the Heresy occurred.

No he wanted to teach them to be better.
You can read the full quote from "Wraith of Iron" here.
It's a good book and one of the few that gives spotlight to Ferrus's mind if only for a couple of pages.

Don’t worry guys, this is perfectly normal behavior for Ferrus. He does need to keep ahead of himself though
