This looks so stupid. He looks like he went to a Witcher school in Beverly Hills. Bro has so much plastic surgery

Looks like it's based on the Netflix animation but yeah I get where you're coming from. It's funny that Geralt being the outlier of the hot witcher turned all witchers into hunky badasses. Ah well. Cool faux hawk tho

Geralt is supposedly pretty ugly, coming from him in the books. Enchantresses find him attractive, but I always thought it's hinted that his looks have nothing to do with it and it's rather a mix of him being charismatic, interesting to them as a mutant and also to spite Yennefer.

In general, the vibe in the books is that Witchers are anything but hot.

I think the idea that book Geralt is ugly is a bit of a misconception in itself personally, the community overcorrecting from how comically handsome he is in TW3. The only person who ever refers to Geralt as ugly in the books is himself (and maybe the narrator if you count the mentions of his nasty smile) as far as I can remember, woman (both commoners and sorceresses) constantly find him attractive, he's just wildly insecure. Milva even outright calls him strapping when she first saw him in Brokilon.

Been a minute since I read them so I probably missed that detail of Geralt being chopped like the rest of them, but yes, I think the games turned witchers from ugly mutants that nobody wants to look at into poster boys from the covers of steamy fantasy romance novels. Personally, I think it's fine to do either, it just lends itself to funny things like Vesemew

He’s certainly not Prince Charming but I don’t believe he was ever called ugly, just the mutations giving him a thin and sickly appearance

Geralt is his own worst critic. He is consistently rates as attractive by women in the books.

Sure. I'm a very avid book geek on the Witcher, but I'm open to changing my mind.

Can you show me three places in the books where Geralt is "rated as attractive by women?". Enchantresses don't count for the reasons I mentioned.

I do not agree that enchantresses don't count, I don't agree with your assertion that it's for purely non-physical reasons.

But beyond that, we have Milva, who's internal monologue describes him as:

A strapping lad, she had thought, thin, yet sinewy... His hair’s white, but his belly’s as flat as a young man’s; hard times have been his companion, not lard and beer...

We also obviously have Essi Daven who falls head over heels for Geralt.

Whereas, on the other hand, the only person who describes Geralt as being actively unattractive, as far as I recall, is Geralt himself.

Strapping means strong. Even here, it's something of an exaggeration since I think we can assume Geralt is probably somewhere near 180-190cm tall, which is tall but not far out of the ordinary. Strong he obviously is, yet again he's to my memory never described as impressively muscular outside of this dubious passage. As far as I can tell, we can safely assume Geralt looks like a normal, slightly above average sized soldier.

Belly's flat as a young man's, hard times have been his companion - she's describing how Geralt looks like a fighter, this scene is her recollection of the first time she meets him in Brokilon in Baptism of Fire if I'm not mistaken. She connects this to him being a rebel. Clearly exposition for how he looks like a poor soldier, "game recognizes game", not some notion of beauty.

Essi Daven, once again, never describes his looks. Geralt assumes she's into him for being a mutant, but he's wrong. Let's notice however how this is outside of the ordinary for him. He's surprised, bitter and taken aback by her treating him like a person and not just a mutant (whether positively or negatively). Essi clearly fell for Geralt's charisma, whether his looks are important here or not is unclear.

There is also Shani. Similar story, although we don't know their history whatsoever. Entirely up for assumption, my assumption has always been that Geralt's charisma and fame thanks to Dandelion's poetry carry him very far.

Geralt creeps people out with his deep ugly and numerous scars, mutant eyes and overall uncanny presentation. Most instances in the books show us the exceptions in my opinion - the people who value Geralt for something other than his body, or alternatively value him for being a particularly interesting body at that. And that's pretty much the best we can go off of - women being attracted to him is something of an exception, at least in his own opinion. Not the rule.

Ultimately though, it's all up for debate so I can't say that you're right or wrong. I just think that the books play in much subtler colors if you assume Geralt is at least partially right about being unwanted. And Sapkowski has demonstrated that he's one to introduce a lot of that gritty contrast between beauty and repulsion whenever possible.

No, "strapping" has definite connotations of handsomeness. Calling someone a "strapping young man" is always a compliment towards their looks. Nobody has ever called someone that and meant "in a strictly neutral sense, he is muscular but I would not consider him attractive."

I don't know why you just dismiss Essi and Shani without any evidence. It's not typical for someone to fall in love with someone they consider physically unattractive. Physical attraction is a core part of human romance. It is more reasonable to assume she does find him attractive until proven otherwise.

Many people being creeped out by his scars is in no way incompatible with women finding him attractive.

Again, the only person who actually describes him as ugly is himself, and Geralt has a ton of self-hatred issues in the books.
