We've literally learned multiple times that pushing out immigrants hurts the economy.
Multiple times shithole states like Mississippi and Missouri have done this at a state level and had issues in the last 20 years. The problem is your average American is genuinely stupid and they're twice as smart as your typical Trumper.

This is not a new plan. It was the plan all along if we read between the lines and followed the policy positions to their natural conclusions. The goal is a smaller economy with less people, less GDP, less of everything. They never said that, but that's what I heard. Example 1: JD claims that high housing prices are the result of too many immigrants purchasing homes. Deport them all and stop immigration and Americans will be able to afford homes. How many people would need to leave to affect the housing market. Enough to shrink the economy! Example 2: Construction 🚧 Less labor= higher costs => less construction. If not for the enormous investment in A.I., we'd be heading to a recession.

They also don't grasp how those kind of politics turn out. They rely on the fact they created a bogeyman to stay in power. Once immigrants are gone, they'll start going after homosexuals, the disabled, the poor, the unemployed, political adversaries and anyone they think they can get away attacking. It's very likely it will come a day they will turn against the very people who voted for them.

“The people here can do the job.” Then why is it that so many farmers do not have anyone to work their crops? That’s just one industry.
“Immigrants don’t assimilate.” Most first generation immigrants don’t assimilate as well (ie it’s not easy to learn a new language when you’re old”). It’s usually the second generation (American born) and every successive generation. Every American is a descendant of an immigrant, unless you’re Native American, and most Americans have assimilated by now.
“Form enclaves throughout the country.” Every single American does the same thing. Most people want to live around “their own kind” because they feel more comfortable around what is familiar.

There is also the demographic aspect. The only population growth that the US anticipates is due to immigration. Fertility is well before replacement in the US. If immigration is curbed to the point of reversing population growth, that will recess the economy.
Nobody considers Japan a world leader economically even though they were the second largest economy in the world 30 years ago. The US stands to go exactly down that path.
All the Americans salivating over more jobs and cheaper homes if we were all to magically perish? They have a terrible work-life balance and a near broken social security system to reckon with. You think healthcare insurance is a crisis now? Wait until bankrupt seniors who make up 30% of the population happens.

I helped to manage a restaurant for many years. I paid full taxes on all our illegal labor and no one ever complained. Tried like the Dickens to get legal labor to wash dishes and bus tables and prepare food; never even got any legal applications for those jobs. Illegal immigrants are a source of free money for the government. We need to punish employers rather than employees before real change in immigration can happen.
3
u/Skete_5959 3d ago
While it is true that increased immigration leads to economic growth, generally speaking, the economic benefits described by increased immigration are captured by 1%, billionaire, corporate, interests. And while it is true that increasing immigration would lessen the burden of the national debt, I am unconvinced that this is more significant than investing in productivity gains. In fact, despite my earlier views, I am increasingly concerned that the trade offs involved in immigration are not worth it at the present time.
Republicans are representing the worst forms of just idiotic racism-based reactions to immigration while democrats are doing their best to 1. Boost what they hope, probably incorrectly, will be a reliable voting demographic, and 2. Increase the labor reserve to reduce their donors labor costs.
I think a general formula for immigration policy in the future should be to clamp down on mass migration, legalize those who are already here without a criminal record, end the H1b program and replace it with a (this time actually, not just “someone cheaper from abroad”) genuine talent program to recruit the best and brightest. Student visas should be handed out like candy for both the immense economic and foreign relations benefits.
This is of course all an economic perspective, ignoring the fact that the country is a tinderbox and immigration one of the most contentious issues.

This does not have any dire consequences for our economy. We have an excess of labor, which is why people can't negotiate their pay whatsoever. We want housing costs to go down? We need less people wanting to buy houses. Immigrating in 15 million people every 4 years, legal or not, is not the way to fix our economy for the American tax payer. Just because the gdp goes up, does not mean the actual economy for the middle class or lower class is improved. In fact, it is probably just the super uper class that it actually helps.
3
u/Over-Support-7086 7d ago
>We have an excess of labor, which is why people can't negotiate their pay whatsoever
I mean sure, if you deliberately ignore the history of labor struggles in the US so you can make your pro-Epstein Class point. it's definitely just a supply and demand issue and has nothing to do with years of crushing organized labor. In that graphic you can see how ilegal immigration was around 140k (guessing monthly?) in Jan 2024 to around 10k in Jan 2026, that is 130k less. Now legal migration went from 150k on Jan 2024 to 40k on Jan 2026 that is 110k less. Also the graphic caption says, “The Trump administration has cut more legal immigration than ilegal immigration.” So ilegal immigration is 130k less and legal immigration is 110k less. That caption is not accurate, and if something so simple to deduce is inaccurate, what can we expect of the data?
3
u/JurgusRudkus 7d ago
Sigh.
Do you see how the chart shows immigration numbers over both the Biden AND the Trump administrations, but the sub heading is only talking about Trump? By Jan 2025 illegal immigration was already falling to 60k. It plateaued around 10k for a net loss of 50k. Now compare that number to the net loss in ALL THE OTHER types of legal immigration (students, asylum seekers etc. )
Now do you understand?

No one is saying it is "only" about illegal immigration, it is about all immigration. If you have not noticed, the number of people getting laid off, and put out of work is increasing rapidly, and as AI adoption grows, that is only going to accelerate every year at a staggering pace. We are about to see massive increases in unemployment numbers next year. That means that the number of accepted immigrants must be reduced. That means ending all H1B, massively decreasing lottery numbers, etc.
It also means the need to radically increase enforcement of immigration laws has never been more important.
2
u/Swimming_Path3353 6d ago
The problem is welfare and indiscriminate benefits.
Immigration to a place where you need to work really hard to survive and later thrive, has a positive selection bias. That’s the kind of effect that built America.
When you have people migrating to a benefit welfare state, you have the opposite effect of attracting the wrong type of people, with the opposite effect: destroying America.
→ More replies (17)2
u/notmyrealnameanon 6d ago
What welfare state are you picturing, exactly, when you say 'indiscriminate benefits'? Are they coming here to abuse the free healthcare we don't have? The paid sick leave and paid family leave we don't have? Our child care, which costs more than college tuition in a lot of states? Or the at-will employment where you can be fired for basically anything?
Undocumented immigrants are barred from SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, and ACA subsidies. Even legal permanent residents face a five year wait for most federal benefits. Meanwhile, undocumented workers pay payroll taxes into Medicare and Social Security they'll never be able to collect.
If anything, the US is the opposite of a benefits magnet. It's a place with thin protections where you work long hours, often for low pay, and hope nothing goes wrong. And they do it. Your own "selection bias" argument describes today's immigrants perfectly. You just don't want to admit that because it undercuts the welfare story.
2
u/rootshootsimaging 6d ago
You’re kinda making the point. “Long hours with low pay” benefits ONLY the billionaires and rich. Instead of hiring an American for a job for decent pay, they hire H1B or illegals and work them to death for less money so they become richer. And that doesn’t even take into account all the illegal trades that they get pulled into like sex work or drug trafficking.
2
u/notmyrealnameanon 6d ago
Okay, so we've moved from 'they come for benefits' to 'they're being exploited by rich employers.' I'd say that's progress, because I actually agree with the second one. Wage theft, unsafe conditions, and trafficking are real problems.
But look at why employers can do it. A worker with no legal status can't report unpaid wages or an unsafe site without risking deportation, and that fear is the employer's leverage. Mass deportation threats don't remove that leverage, they strengthen it. H-1B workers have the same problem. Their visa is tied to one employer, so they can't walk away from a bad deal.
If you want to stop billionaires from undercutting American wages, then really go after the employers. Real penalties for hiring off the books, strong wage enforcement, a higher minimum wage, and work permits that let people change jobs. Make exploiting immigrants expensive, and the incentive to prefer them over Americans disappears.
As for sex work and drug trafficking, trafficking victims are exactly who we should be protecting, not punishing.
→ More replies (4)2
u/EMNofWA 4d ago
First off we have all those types of benefits and definitely more of them then Mexico and guatemala.
It’s just that you as a regular wage earner don’t qualify for them, but under the table workers absolutely do.
States like California explicitly advertise all these programs in foreign languages to illegals and refuse to ask questions about nationality. Or they assign welfare to Children who are the Wong Americans and then redraw the benefit based on the child’s household. The federal bars on foreigners receiving these benefits are on paper only.
The final claim is dumb. You’re essentially saying they should exist to be exploited for social security taxes and get no benefit? How will that be a politically viable solution long term?

They’re the same ones that say, “I don’t mind them, as long as they come here the ‘right’ way”

what the h1b was made for skilled labouere payeed , and thmost nworkeeat par , but exploited today, by the body shoppers, hiring h91b for less pay, make more money for the comapny And secondly why didnt it stop at h1b , why green cards became the big thing. Green cards should have been cautiously handed out, not to every h1b on eztension, and why this unhindered extension, after 6 years, what is now usa doing, shouls have done long back. For the americans.

"Cut more illegal immigration" what the hell does that even mean? Now you guys are mad that he hasn't completed the wall? His focus is on the millions of illegal immigrants within the country. And yes, we should slow down immigration as a whole for now while we straighten the illegal immigration process out. Ooga booga big orange man bad for having his own process that isn't exactly what you hate-addled psychos expect.

I think people say deportation is just about illegal immigration. The others are just reducing the number of legal ways to immigrate currently.

Less immigration, less government funding for those immigrants which equals less spending. This is why inflation has taken hol, I know small businesses are aren't able to hire anyone right now because there's noone around willing to take these cash paying jobs, their businesses cannot support full-time benefit earning employees.

Extend the graph back pre-Biden and it’s clear this isn’t a change so much as a return to normalcy

“Normalcy” I.E only whites in huh? Why don’t we deport the whites that immigrated 100 years ago. They don’t get the scrutiny and apparently consider themselves “white natives” which is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

It was never about illegal immigration and has been, and will always be about non-white immigration, really.
Trump rallies don't talk about French or British immigrants. Their rallies talk about Mexicans.

With automation, AI and soon to be robotics the US does not need unskilled labor. To import unskilled labor is just importing another unemployed person that will drain safety nets.
Germany and france are proof of this. Poland is the complete opposite and is succeeding economically despite a falling population.

After basically not having a border for four years, we kinda need to have a reset.
Trump won the popular vote on mass-deportation rhetoric. Sorry, bro.
