FOSS home surveillance?

Hi,

Since Karl has mentioned that he has worked in information security, has InRangeTV ever discussed FOSS home surveillance options that don't involve Amazon, Google, or the other tech cartels / nerd reich? To better safeguard my collection, I am researching a surveillance system options with remote monitoring, alert notification, and maybe cloud backup capabilities.

I self host Frigate NVR, and I highly recommend it.

I bought a few cheap PoE cameras and a used PC to install Debian on for the server. I use some local AI models on my own hardware for object detection and descriptive notifications. You can wire it all in to Home Assistant too, if you wish.

Do not buy random WiFi cameras since they are full of security holes. Reolink is the only brand that I trust, but I still block Internet access, and the cameras are only accessible on the LAN.

Create a local NAS server with remote encrypted backup. TrueNAS community edition is the leading FOSS option.
