Don’t be discouraged

It sucks that we lost that game Hoover missed many open throws, marsh could’ve toe tapped victory. But Cig is obviously the coaching beast and it sucks our streak is over but we did all this without ever having a five star high school recruit which Ohio State has overflowing (people are quick to forget where they came from)

I’m not discouraged. I’m a bit irked because we beat ourselves. I think this is the necessary post championship loss they need though. They aren’t going to get to the next level until they experience some adversity. It’s a “good” loss. They have been playing far from optimal all season. I’m confident this will be a wake up call for the team.

I agree. It wasnt just one thing either - Hoover didnt have good eyesight - overthrew or missed targets, FGs missed, penalties, and last play lacking situational awareness all contributed. Surprisingly kept it close all considered. Hats off to our Defense. Better lose now than later.

I will be joining you eventually. I am not that quick however.

if we just play better than today and Hoover gets his head out of his ass for three quarters, we will be in the Big Ten Championship.

Why exactly would i be discouraged after that? Marsh’s foot is 3 inches to the right IU wins. Cooper’s foot 3 inches to the left last year and there is a scenario where IU doesn’t even make the B1G title game or playoffs.

Winning is hard. Winning against a good team is harder. Streak is over. Defense played as good as they have all year. Win out and they are in the playoffs again. I’m encouraged if nothing else.

u/iuheadcoach 1h ago

We held Jeremiah Smith to 4 catches for 68 yards

5

u/browne84763 1h ago

And 50 of those came on one play

3

u/jaghutgathos 1h ago

One a play that from my vantage point was the least aggressive defensive back play by two guys on a duck of a throw that I’ve ever scene in 40 years of watching football.

I, for one, am not daunted

I don’t feel bad about that game at all. If luck went a bit differently then we win. The secondary was excellent & defense in general. We are National Championship contenders this year & we still have Cig at the helm to make improvements.

We didn’t play Ohio State until the B1G Championship game last year… would we have beaten them Week 7 last year? Who knows….

I’m optimistic.

u/Useful_Fee_2875 1h ago

I’m extremely optimistic about this year’s Indiana team we outplayed Ohio State. It took two fumbles to miss field goals, and inches away from 1 foot being in bound for us to lose. They really do need to dial things in though. Hoover has got to work on his decision-making and the run game needs to step up. Marsh and Becker is probably the best wide receiving tandem in the country.

today. Show that we have a very good defense once again and if Hoover can make the adjustments moving forward I think we could be a good candidate for the playoffs.

2

u/Brew_Wallace 1h ago

Agree. Clean up a few things, like QB hitting open receivers and open field tackling, and get back to not hurting ourselves and we will be really tough to beat

20

u/hoosiergamecock 2h ago

Marsh could have been an Indiana legend on that play but he flat footed it. Youre allowed to be upset. That was a slam dunk play. Ball was right where it needed to be. He forgot about his feet.

That was a game winner and even though we sucked on offense all game still had a chance to win. Those 2 inches keep OSU in the top 5 and kick us out to a 9 or 10.

12

u/sferrand22 2h ago

I’d even say we outplayed Ohio state and just completely beat ourselves. I do disagree with the coaching decision to kick the long field goal in the second half. At this point kicker is a liability and it’s something Cig won’t put up with.

4

u/bippy404 1h ago

Indiana lost the game for Indiana. SO MANY missed opportunities. You can’t play a team like Ohio State and make that many mistakes and get away with it. Bummer!!!

3

u/digitaldigdug 1h ago

That kick was simply out of his range. The first was just a fluke doink. Radicic is usually money.

2

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

I can see how you disagree with the call. But I am not turning on Niko yet. It would be great if he had longer range but I think nearly everyone knows that was outside his.

2

u/sferrand22 1h ago

I’m more concerned about the chip shots he missed . It’s a 1 point game if he makes the first . Again, Indiana absolutely beat itself , defense was lights out , Hoover has to get the ball down on those throws over the middle to Becker . 2 fumbles were awful. Thought Hoover recovered nicely late with a chance to win it . However gotta be better earlier and hit the slants .

1

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

I am going to agree but not go as far. A Big Ten kicker should have made that chip. No question. However, do to the hashes, that is one of the hardest angles in kicking. By that I mean there is so little room for error. You have to say such a small amount of degrees. And he the upright, that shows you how easy it is to be a hair off.

1

u/SweatyCockroach8212 37m ago

A 1 point game and then they kick another as the game expires for a 2 point win.

2

u/browne84763 1h ago

They wouldn’t have kicked it if Hoover looked capable. I have no idea what they gave him in that tent nor how it’s not a PED, because he was a new person after that. Why’d they wait so long!!?

2

u/sferrand22 1h ago

Something for pain I’m sure…

11

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

How do you say its right were it needed to be when he had so much open space to the right. Sure receivers have adjusted before, but its completely on Hoover’s inaccuracy, see all other incompletion from today.

3

u/hoosiergamecock 1h ago

Marsh was projected as a top 25 pick in the draft as of Friday. Hoover is a 3-5th rounder. He could have gotten his foot in bounds. When he grabbed his helmet he knew he blew it, not the QB

0

u/jaghutgathos 1h ago

Hoover had at least 7 overthrows. Marsh didn’t toe tap, fine, but Hoover doesn’t heave that ball into the boundary then we win. Period.

-1

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

You can’t run a successful offense on the basis of bailing the QB out.

2

u/hoosiergamecock 1h ago

When your skill guys are better than your qb yoi kinda have to.

0

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

Yes sure, but you would never deaign an offense to be like that going into season. Because you would now that is a losing strategy. The expectation should always be every one is great. Not a just better than good QB and phenomenal receiver. Josh failed to step up when it was his to deliver. Marsh was mislead and didn’t make a phenomal catch. Hoover is farther off expectations.

4

u/coppockm56 1h ago

Hoover threw it too far outside and led Marsh out of bounds. That ball should have been an easier catch for a TD. However, at the same time, Hoover was also about to be smashed. But as Knight always used to say, you don't lose a game on the last possession. There were a lot of overthrown balls and a missed chip shot FG to consider. And, a run game that couldn't go anywhere.

Hell, we could have done without that Isaiah Jones penalty for falling on Sayin after he slid. That gave them the possession back.

That's not at all on Marsh, and I hope that doesn't get into his head.

2

u/Brew_Wallace 1h ago

Marsh seems like the type of guy that will be highly motivated by that error. He doesn’t seem to shirk or shy from anything

2

u/bigchillguy 1h ago

No way we drop to 9 or 10. OSU and Bama stayed about the same after losing to UT and UGA. Yes it was at home, but the committee should’ve watched the game. BYU will drop after losing to ND, Texas will drop after they lost to UF, etc.

Bama jumps us, but if Ole Miss doesn’t convincingly beat Missouri we drop to 6

3

u/jaghutgathos 1h ago

You are underestimating how little they think of IU football.

1

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

Have you meant an AP Voter?

1

u/ZMarty85 13m ago

Helps indiana if georgia and/or bama lose too. Would enjoy both losing

0

u/Kbrichmo 1h ago

Hoover couldve thrown that ball anywhere in a 1 yard radius and as long as its in bound its a touchdown. Instead he put it out of bounds

8

u/317photo Cig’s Most Loyal Soldier 2h ago

Hoover really sold it. I’ve defended him all year but he blew it all game. Defense was really really strong given what they had to play with.

1

u/digitaldigdug 1h ago

I wouldn't even say he blew it. That was a decent throw considering he was running for his life

-3

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

Nearly every game I been he isn’t Fernando. Then I let myself or others convince me its an unfair comparison. That he just needs time. But you just can’t teach accuracy.

4

u/StokinManiac271 1h ago

Yes, he's not as good or accurate as Fernando, but expecting him to be Heisman caliber off rip isn't fair to him. He needs to improve to get us over the hump, but the Fernando comparisons have got to stop

4

u/emeraldepiphone96 Raised in Bloomington 45m ago

Definitely a tough loss, but it’s a tough loss because it was so damn close. After all the years of IU football being bad, I’ll take a loss that could’ve gone either way against a Top 5 team when the alternative is losing by 50+ at home like some of the games I used to go to as a kid.

2

u/slimbongdong 4m ago

Who would have thought this was possible 4 years ago

6

u/BoolinScape 2h ago

Our defense is stout no doubt about that. Charlie B is one of the best in College right now. Hoover is questionable if he can take us all the way.

Nick Marsh was one step actually inbounds from being an Indiana legend. Heart breaking loss I think I would've preferred Ohio State just scoring on us again than that.

2

u/pray4NYR 1h ago

Hoover accuracy/reads for sure… the the broadcast pointed out that first hat Brock schott wide open. Hoover. Get in the lab if you wanna win a natty it’s still in reach lol

2

u/WreckinBawl 1h ago

Recorded the game to watch later, had to listen to it on 105.1. A lot of nuance & substance can get lost in radio play-by-play so, as much as it'll suck, I'll watch it later.

Things that immediately come to mind 1. Losing count of how many times Don Fischer said "Overthrown by Hoover." 2. Missed chip-shot FG that came back to bite us. 3. Trying a 55 yard FG after the missed chippy. 4. Two roughing the passer calls.

It really sounded like we were our own worst enemy today.

2

u/Anonymous___0522 1h ago

I was worried about this team going in. I was worried that this years team just wasn’t good enough compared to last year. But this game proved me wrong. I believe we’re gonna run the table and end up a top 4 seed in the playoff. If Hoover locks in and makes the easy throws this team has a good chance of repeating the same success from last year. Hoover HAS to get better though. He has not been that great this season

2

u/Historical-Olive5538 20m ago

All  I could think about at the end was Penn State in 2025. Just the subtle differences 2 young men’s feet had on each game. Season not over, never daunted!

2

u/Longjumping_Taro5336 1h ago

Run game non-existent, Hoover way too inconsistent and Nico has not looked the same since his injury. Tough battle but a few concerning trends. Gotta rebound after this.

2

u/SonnyC_50 2h ago

I'm more concerned about the play calling than anything else. There were a lot of WFT calls there.

2

u/Kbrichmo 1h ago

Didn’t run a single time on that last drive and relied entirely on a mediocre QB on 3rd and 10 constantly

1

u/SonnyC_50 1h ago

Exactly. That was my point. We had plenty of time, why rush it?

1

u/hoosierheadBSU 1h ago

You get WTF calls when can’t lean on your QB to make the throws.

1

u/EastNice3860 1h ago

Not discouraged..But I saw this loss coming after last week's performance..Ohio St are no punks..

1

u/NoJaguar5942 1h ago

My thoughts are Ohio didn’t beat us we beat ourselves.

1

u/Tonight-Unlikely 1h ago

The tough part is accepting that our ceiling comes down to one singular player. Defense played well, offensive line held up in pass protection, receivers were open. Replacing Mendoza was going to be an impossible task, but it just sucks to see that if we had someone close to his caliber, we would be rolling along just like last year. Proud of this team and what they’ve done, but it is discouraging that their shortcoming is so glaringly obvious.

1

u/manmythlegendhoosier 55m ago

Hoover and the kicker cost IU the game. Argue a brick wall.

1

u/jcmiller210 47m ago

Hoover has to be better. Just too many missed throws today. The missed field goal can't happen. Should've probably went for it, instead of kicking the deep field goal, but the offense was so bad today, I can understand the decision. Defense was good most the day, except that TD pass where two defenders just watched the play happen in front of them. Frustrating loss cause with average play on offense we win today.

1

u/I-like-CRIME 44m ago

I’m not discouraged, but I am a little pissed that I nearly yelled myself into cardiac arrest just to find out we lost. Tough way to lose but a great game.

1

u/SweatyCockroach8212 43m ago

If Nico makes the FG that hit the upright (I don’t fault him for missing from 55) then they kick the FG at the end and win by 2.

There is blame to go all around on this one.

1

u/Long_Decision_317 13m ago

I think its a good loss for them. They beat themselves not the otherwise around. Im more worried about how everyone will vote. They will probably knock them back to 13th because they are IU

1

u/Mammoth-Ear3490 0m ago

Heartbreaker because we should’ve won, but we’ve still got everything to play for this season.

Beat Michigan.

1

u/NovelExamination5431 2h ago

So how is Hoover missing open throws and reads not supposed to make me discouraged

1

u/Brew_Wallace 57m ago

He’s shown he can do make the reads and throws, just need to get him doing it more consistently. And even after making a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes this team still had a chance to win against a top 5 team. It’s impossible to win every game
