Review 🦸♂️Kingdom Come - Mark Waid & Alex Ross : Review
After the heavy non-fics last month, I decided to read something lighter, like a comic book - always a great way to reset one's reading habit I feel. And what better way, than to start with this masterpiece!
Premise:
The age of idealistic superheroes is long gone, and opportunistic metahumans now run the show. People have lost hope for a better future. And then, in Kansas, a calamity occurs so bad, that the Justice League (led by Superman) have to return - to "restore order".
But another faction, doesn't agree with Superman's totalitarian regime. The battle between these legions, shall determine the fate of the supes, and humans. All this, seen through the eyes of a Possessed Pastor!
What I loved:
- Goddamn the art is so beautiful. Holy shit! Each panel a masterpiece. 🙌
- The themes explored are brilliant too - Rehabilitation vs Retribution, Hope vs Despair, Faith vs Pragmatism...with the armageddon biblical backbone.
- Wonder Woman ❤️
- Batman 🖤
What I didn't like:
- My own lack of knowledge: didn't know many of the supes mentioned -Hawkman, Spectre, Captain Marvel?! etc. It doesn't cause any hindrance to understanding the story at all though.
Conclusion:
- Really nice exploration of "Rule by Hope vs Fear" theme, through the supes narrative. Regarded as one of the best superhero comics, this truly deserves that recognition.
- Just for the artwork alone, I'd recco everyone to give this a chance.
Rating: 10/10. Absolute blast.
P.S. This is part of DC Compact Edition comics - cheaper and smaller, but good enough to enjoy great comics the old style - on a rough paper, instead of glossy sleek ones that cost 2-3x more.
