Stuck in the bathroom because the handicap door broke

Post image

The University of Southern Maine Portland now only has TWO wheelchair accessible bathrooms on campus. FML. I had to cross the street from the dining hall to find a building with an accessible bathroom because the dining hall does not have one.

I will now be late to an exam. I called campus police because nobody uses this bathroom. It has been 10 minutes.

Edit: 15 minutes and counting

Edit: rescued after 20 minutes. Still missed my midterm.

It doesn't help with your immediate problem but I would make absolutely sure your professor understands what happened here and that they absolutely can and must not penalize you in any way for being late due to this.

This is a failure of the university's accommodations

Yeah this is a lawsuit waiting to happen, if the emergency button doesn’t call anybody in a timely manner, and there’s no way to open from the inside, this is a fire hazard. Someone could die here.

It’s not an emergency button, it’s a button to automatically open the door.

There are often emergency cords that can be pulled dependent on location, I’ve not been in this specific bathroom. Regardless the fact that the autoopen button doesn’t function, nothing of what I said has lost its meaning.

Call the fire inspector. And you better make a goddamn racket in the office about missing your midterm because the only ada bathroom was so far away and then it trapped you inside

I went up to the presidents office and had a meeting for over an hour with the facility managers, vice president, and my accessibility coordinator because the entire campus is a death trap

Call the fire inspector NOW. Do not give them warning. The fire inspector will march down and tear them apart if they're even remotely decent

That thumb turn lock is also not ADA compliant.

Call the state fire inspector. That shit will be fixed and upgraded by tomorrow.

The university i go to, spent $5million on a renovation and making it "more accessible" now there is no way for someone in a wheelchair to go directly from The Student Union, to the library. They have to go all the way around the block to get the ramps, and in the winter it's almost impossible.

Plus there are 4 buildings they cant get past the first floor because the elevators to the walkways are no longer accessible. They put stairs in to get to one and the other the doors to it are too narrow.

Name names. What’s the school?

Pretty sure it’s RIT. They added a new building a few years ago called the SHED, and it is exactly as described. Can’t actually go between buildings* without using elevators if you’re a wheelchair user, cuz there’s only stairs and elevators connecting the landings. Also those stairs are like, 5 steps or less, not needed.

*while staying indoors

My best friend of several years is a wheelchair user and also an alum, and goddamn was that campus hard to get around in the winter.

Is this RIT? Gotta be RIT with the SHED addition.

Just... Let me fucking do it! Technology doesn't need to be here...

My guy.. the technology in this case is there so people in wheelchairs can open the door. It’s a wheelchair accessible bathroom that OP specifically sought so I assume they are unable to open the door without the button working functionally.

You have your phone to take pictures so call the university and tell them to get let out.

Did you read the post?

The bigger issue is that this is a big safety hazard. If there was an emergency shelter couldn't exit the room or building safely. That's a big deal. It should be made a big deal before it literally becomes a death trap.

I can’t exit most of my classes by myself either lol. Can’t get anywhere

I'm with the people telling you to report it to the local fire Marshall

Read the post, but also try to understand that being able to take photos does not guarantee the ability to make a phone call is there.
