Does this tile extend too far?

My mom is renovating her bathroom and the contractor just finished the tile. It doesn’t look right to me. Worth the giant hassle to fix it?

Yes. Way too far. I’ve had my contractor fix their tile job when I noticed it was crooked. They had to redo it even though they didn’t want to fix it, they had to. At the end of the day, you have to live with looking at it everyday.

2

u/jennysofresh 5d ago

Yes it absolutely does look too far behind the toilet. My contractor did the same thing and it looks horrible. Can’t even center a picture on the wall behind it now. Wondering if we had the same guy if you’re in Texas…

2

u/ayapapaya50 8d ago

It should end at the edge of the tub

1

u/Peleppoppeee 8d ago

Do dogs bark

2

u/Feasibl 8d ago

Definitely should have stopped a half piece back.

3

u/Miserable_Oil_4501 8d ago

it definitely is. its kinda hurting my eyes lol

2

u/Cherry_xvax21 9d ago

Curious who the installer was who thought this was correct. Sorry.

2

u/Narrow_Possession348 9d ago

Yes, it is. It should have stopped at the end of the tub. Or, it should have gone all the way across. I would absolutely make them redo it because that would make me angry every time I walked in and saw that.

u/LadyNzuri 9d ago edited 8d ago

The wallpaper is extended too far. Tile the whole wall.

5

u/Caffeinated_sentient 9d ago

Too far and not far enough at the same time

7

u/Artboy2020 9d ago

it should have been the entire wall -

3

u/SetFabulous265 9d ago

Hurts my eyes

6

u/Delicious_Horror_734 9d ago

Yes it looks awful!

4

u/TheycallmeElla 9d ago

Yes. For symmetry, it should have ended at around the right-hand side of the shorter tiles. My OCD could never.

2

u/kostaslamprou 9d ago

My OCD would have ended it to line up perfectly straight with the bath. Rather have it nicely lined up than having it equal parts at either side of the toilet.

Better yet, center the toilet too.

2

u/TheycallmeElla 7d ago

Well yes, this would be the correct thing to do. Thanks for OCD-ing better than me, although if I think about it, this is what I would have done in The Sims 😎

17

u/AdVivid5134 9d ago

Yes I wish I didn’t know this exists and I’m sorry this happened to you

0

u/ImprovementTrick9492 9d ago

Oh my. You do know thy going to be an absolute nightmare to keep clean,, right? Every bit of soap scum and mildew etc. will get caught in all those crevices…… 😳😬

7

u/PPJJ99 9d ago

Extend too far, yes. Will it be covered by a shower curtain?! If so, maybe not worth it if it costs you more money to fix.

7

u/AssociationOk6136 9d ago

Yes. Looks DYI.

1

u/msb_tv 9d ago

Yes, next question

9

u/TeaIndependent7888 9d ago

Total screw up. Do not pay until he fixes this.

13

u/PorcelainQueen12 9d ago

See if they can extend it ALL the way behind the toilet (easy cleaning)

4

u/PorcelainQueen12 9d ago

Why would they do that!!???

6

u/FullPrinciple5170 9d ago

Also, I hope your mom loves scrubbing grout floors because those small tiles on that floor with all that grout is gonna be a lot of fun to clean. especially on the floor where you’re walking

2

u/pickleylily 9d ago

A steam mop will keep those looking like new. Every once in a while, scrub with some bleach. It’s not that difficult with the right tools.

0

u/FullPrinciple5170 9d ago

Yep, as I said, I hope somebody likes scrubbing small tiles on the floor with all that grout

7

u/Paddlefoot110 9d ago

Yes looks odd. Especially with the paper

6

u/Medium_Frosting5633 10d ago

It doesn’t extend far enough!!! It should continue behind the toilet, cleaning splash-back from paper is going to be a nightmare! From an aesthetic point of view probably the only realistic option would be to extend the tile behind the toilet to the same height as the backsplash behind the basunande have half a tiles-width less of the full height on the right so the full height ends just beyond the toilet cistern.

6

u/rokin-321 10d ago

Either go all the way to the wall or stop at the end of the tub

9

u/FullPrinciple5170 10d ago

Yes.

It should have stopped at the edge of the beginning of the tub. Easily fixed, tile removed. They’ll have to fix a couple of tiles are full tiles now, back to half tiles. and then new drywall put up and get rid of that wallpaper, please and put up a new edging on the tile.

No way I can look at that every day and not just wanna rip out the tiles

3

u/3DCloudPlatform 10d ago

Yes, the tile should end at the tub.

8

u/Jaded_GeminiLX 10d ago

Yes, or not far enough - finish the wall?

3

u/Icy-Development-9020 10d ago

Yes, it does. Can they fix it?

3

u/JerkDickMate 10d ago

Yes but it’s ok

2

u/No_Anteater8899 10d ago

Maybe you can get a different toilet with narrower tank? Dang

7

2

u/Severe_Airport1426 10d ago

It doesn't extend enough

13

u/MrKurz 10d ago

It's right in the sweet spot of terrible.

28

u/LucDesign-eu 10d ago

Yes, it does, and it is worth the hassle.

3

u/perfectpinkparakeet 10d ago

I’m sure a shelf will help take focus away from

7

u/Vicsteroflove1968 10d ago

Yes, you might as well take it all the way across

14

u/lambeyoncealways 10d ago

It's pretty bad. My OCD husband would absolutely die if he saw this. I say extend the tile all the way behind the toilet - wall paper behind a toilet isn't a great idea anyways. I get the wall paper love, but a bathroom is not the best spot. Behind the sink is not great, but could be OK- just have to stay on top of splashes on the wall. The biggest problem though is if you're a hot shower taker. I like them super hot, so its steamy no matter what in my bathroom. Wallpaper HATES that!

5

u/poppybrooke 10d ago

Yes, should have been a whole tile back

6

u/WhyCantIJustBeKirby 10d ago

Yes. It should end with the tub if not just an inch past the tub.

5

u/Adventurous_Light_85 10d ago

It would look better if it ended at the tile break just to the right of the

7

u/One-Loan-6078 10d ago

If that’s real wallpaper you definitely don’t want water splashing on it so my opinion, for functional reasons, is no

4

u/SecretMiddle1234 10d ago

Yes. Should extend behind the toilet

7

u/attleboromass16 10d ago

Just tile the whole bathroom

5

u/mary2chat2 10d ago

You could extend tile behind toilet to meet cabinet

3

u/Lanae777 11d ago

Yes-ish. Was there a glass shower wall there before? If not a wider tub is always nice 😊

2

u/Spiritual-March7843 11d ago

Yes. Quick fix would be to pain the wallpapered wall the same colour as the tiles - then it will seem less obvious.

14

u/gipapag 11d ago edited 11d ago

Gross. The lack of symmetry on the toilet is horrendous. If I was taking a piss in the toilet, standing there for the 1.5minute, all I’d think about is the tile to wallpaper width decision.

7

u/CinderCinnamon 11d ago

Wallpaper directly behind the sink is a crazy choice, that’s going to get splashback and wrecked so quickly

Wallpaper in the bathroom is generally just a bad decision

Tile should extend further not less

7

u/sabrinateenagewich 11d ago

That’s not necessarily true, there’s a splashback on the sink and there’s no way to tell if it’s been treated or not. I’m an interior designer and put wallpaper in bathrooms all the time and it’s fine

1

u/CinderCinnamon 11d ago

That splashback is so low, anyone who has used a sink with a splashback like that regularly would know how much water gets on the wall

6

u/GrosRacoon 11d ago

obviously

2

u/selkertr 11d ago

Extend it more, so it will seem planned

10

u/Chapelson888 11d ago

Looks terrible.

6

u/tSpoonFarmer 11d ago

Keep going, all the way to the sink back splash

3

u/somegingershavesouls 11d ago

Normal is 6” past

5

u/lulu-la-leader 11d ago

No, it’s like an added water barrier.

3

u/Apprehensive_Bee614 11d ago

Not enough now.

3

u/coolestmom_evr 11d ago

Yes! Very lol

-1

u/clammycam 11d ago

Wallpaper isn’t good for the bathroom it doesn’t hold up. It just not waterproof. The tiles are better version of subway tile 👏👏

1

u/Super_Duper_Nova 11d ago

I mean, yeah. But it’s fine.

2

u/auscadtravel 11d ago

Yes, by a lot.

2

u/Mir232 11d ago

Yes,

3

u/No-Commercial-3100 11d ago

It definitely looks like it should have ended half a tile shorter.

Maybe if you get rid of the wallpaper and add the curtains it will look better.

1

u/Remarkable_Scallion 11d ago

Not worth it IMO. I think hanging something above the toilet would break up the visual and distract the eye. Like a shelf, piece of art, towel rack, something thing like that.

6

u/Blondie0179 11d ago

If the wall didn’t have wallpaper and was painted a solid color, it wouldn’t look so awkward.

4

u/bethhannen 11d ago edited 11d ago

I think I would take the tiles all the way across that wall if possible?

6

u/3SMP 11d ago

Yes.

3

u/13peaches 11d ago

Put up a shower curtain to see if you can live with it. You might be surprised by how much that draws the eye away from this, but yes it shouldn’t have interacted with the toilet in any way.

2

u/RipCorgiLover 11d ago

Can you get a skinner toilet?

6

u/Fearless-Aide-9059 11d ago

Yes and now i want to cry

4

u/Imnodaisy61 11d ago

Yes…this would blow my OCD off the charts

1

u/AdvantageNo2345 11d ago

I don’t have OCD and it’s driving my brain crazy looking at it.

0

u/Imnodaisy61 11d ago

I understand 🤣🤣 There is not even a tile border on the edge. Another OCD moment 🤪

3

u/DaeDream8 11d ago

Yes bcuz it doesn’t look balanced with the toilet

5

u/Low_Carpet_436 12d ago

End of tub or extend all the way across the vanity wall.

5

u/what_blue 12d ago

Yesss it’s too far. The contractor should have better attention to detail. Maybe he was worried about water damage to the wallpaper? I’m worried about what condensation from the toilet tank will do to the wallpaper over time.

4

u/PierogiNotPierogies 12d ago

More tile. Less wallpaper.

3

u/Cautious-Event-6974 12d ago

This would drive me crazy

1

u/Difficult-City1185 12d ago

It looks like you ran out of tile

1

u/MarketBeginning8921 12d ago

Not worth the hassle

1

u/John-EngArch 12d ago

seems fine but colour can be changed

8

u/Baobaojelly 12d ago

As an interior designer/ developer, yes. Too far, not because of where it is from the tub but because of where it is behind the toilet.

To resolve, you have 3 options.

Bring the tile back to the right half a tile length of the tile so it doesn’t cut off the toilet. You will probably need to have enough extra paper to redo that last panel of paper.

If you don’t have enough paper, you could move the tile back to the right the half length, then run the tile behind the toilet dying into the vanity. I would align top of part to the vanity. This would require you to replace less wallpaper, but more tile.

Last, if you can’t replace wallpaper, I would run the tile behind the toiler and align top with vanity so at least that line isn’t cutting the toilet. And tile behind toilet is easier for cleaning anyway.

I find when you work with a contractor directly with no designer / architect, unless they are design build, a lot of these little details can get lost. Some tend to make the decision that is easiest and most straight forward, so you risk sacrificing aesthetics.

1

u/PotterHouseCA 11d ago

The only one of those that would look like a professional design is the first.

The other option is to tile the entire wall, which I also don’t think is an optimal. Any tile overlap with the side of the toilet looks like an inept DIY rather than a professional job.

A decent tile contractor knows what’s standard and that this isn’t. I’ve worked with subs. Also, designers don’t avoid wallpaper in bathrooms. So much here sounds suspicious.

7

u/FynTheCat 12d ago

In Europe it is most common that the space behind the toilets is tioed too. Actually, most batgrooms are fully tiled or lower half of the room is fully tiled.

So, to me it isn't far enough.

But yeah, it is unusual to stop there.

3

u/Desperate_Visit3829 12d ago

Yes, he went half a tile too far. It would’ve looked much better if he hadn’t gone that far like it really looks stupid to have the tile and just passed the water tank of the toilet. Like what are you supposed to do with that? you can’t even hang a picture up there now. Honestly, if it were me, I’d make him fix it because that’s just poor workmanship right there and very poor design skills.

4

u/HorrorWillingness347 12d ago

It's already there, so carry it on

4

u/Easy_Perspective3244 12d ago

It's protecting the wall so why change it?

6

u/Linniepip 12d ago

Is it better to be right or kind?!

3

u/mssLemons 12d ago

It makes your bathroom look too busy. The room doesn't look too big already and this design makes it look even smaller and closed in.

1

u/Yikes206 12d ago

Maybe they're installing a larger tub?

Yes. It's killing my OCD. I would never be able to use the toilet in there.

1

u/thaleia10 12d ago

I’m not OCD and I couldn’t stand it either.

8

u/Stangh62 12d ago

Yes.. the tile should end at bathtub line..it’s only logical since you have another pattern going on..😁

3

u/Jaded-Ad9682 12d ago

Yes

IMHO you have too many patterns going on w the tile , floor and wall paper so I think correcting the tile is a must

4

u/FoxieMayhem 12d ago

Yes, it should end at the outer edge of the tub

9

u/Leelulu905 12d ago

Yes, but it might look better once you have the shower curtain on it. There are some curved shower curtain options that might take the eye away from it.

1

u/IredditNowhat 12d ago

No. You could still see it, unless you went all the way to the toilet.

6

u/Natural-Alarm4839 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah, it's definitely odd and a little unpleasant to the eye but I'm not really sure it would be worth the hassle to get it fixed. I think a guest using the washroom probably wouldn't even notice, and if they do it would be a very short lived unhappiness, lol. Definitely not big enough of a problem to pay to fix it. But if it really bugs your mom and company is willing to come back and fix it for free, sure. Otherwise I say it's not that bad.

Maybe put something on the back of the toilet, or in-between toilet and bath to create a visual distraction.

2

u/m_hoffmann_fineart 12d ago

Yes, that’s horrible.
Pull out the half bricks and finish a wainscot behind the toilet and carry over into the backsplash.

That is poor form. Would drive me crazy, and whoever did it has no business laying out tile.

12

u/you2234 12d ago

Yea but who cares- not a big deal IMO

18

u/CheezRocket 12d ago

Yes it looks strange. The tile either needs to end closer to the tub with a vertical end cap-or extend all the way behind toilet to vanity, ending with vertical end cap, or extend all the way across that wall.
The asymmetry is driving me nuts!

9

u/npb0179 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yes

I think to make it work, you should add fake plants. Something that lays along the walls intersection like a vine down a tree or wall would be beautiful.

Edit: I can’t believe you guys upvoted my gibberish. I must’ve been exhausted when I wrote that. 😂

6

u/Prestigious-Yak-7014 12d ago

Yes - looks wierd.

2

u/Prestigious-Yak-7014 12d ago

Or you could continue it behind the toilet to the vanity

3

u/fountainofMB 12d ago

You usually end a couple of inches from the tub. It will be pain to fix but probably doable as the short half tile could be removed and then the long full tile removed and a half tile put in. The removal of the full tile just hits the tub edge so it might not mess up waterproofing.

8

u/ToeNumerous7499 12d ago

The OCD is in overdrive and my left eyelid is twitching.

6

u/ashleychrist 12d ago

My exact reaction.

3

u/Spiritual_Version838 12d ago

Looks pretty odd to me. I dont know about ending at tha tub, though. To be practical, you want to allow for a little over splash. I would just go back the distance of the half-tiles, to the next row of fill tiles(if thst makes sense). Will there be some kind of trim piece?

4

u/External_Outcome5678 12d ago

Yes. Worth it to fix. It bugs me that it goes slightly behind the toilet. If it wasn’t for that i might be able to live with it.

2

u/SanAntonio78223 12d ago

Yep Should end at the tub

2

u/MischiefManagedMama 12d ago

So funny looking

0

u/Sensitive_Ad_9195 12d ago

?? Obviously what sort of dumb question is this it even goes a bit behind the toilet

4

u/Mountain-Time-1010 12d ago

I’d say yes. And I would have finished it with a vertical row.

6

u/lemonmerangutan 12d ago

Yes, but I'd never spend money to fix it, if that makes sense? Like yeah, it's wrong, but it's really not offensive or egregious

6

u/unicornelia 13d ago

How is it even a question? The toilet has a split background, looks misaligned and off. Probably 10cm less tile would help

7

u/Simple_Piece190 13d ago

Definitely

4

u/Sepado 13d ago

Did the contractor start tiling from the outside corner of the tub? It looks like they did everything possible to avoid cutting tile.

5

u/caffeinejunkie123 13d ago

It should have ended at the tub. This looks awkward to me.

7

u/Interesting_Youth181 13d ago

Yes looks weird

6

u/lhymes 13d ago

It’s definitely extended too far - it should’ve been half a tile shorter so it fell between the toilet and tub. That said, it’s honestly not that bad and could be made to look intentional in a way that doesn’t come off as a workaround or bandaid. It will look much better once a shower curtain is installed, too.

8

u/Necessary_Money3248 13d ago

I would take the tile all the way to the corner of the cabinet and then just have wallpaper behind the mirror or I would tile the entire back wall. You shouldn’t leave it as is.

-11

u/Last_Pick_2169 13d ago

Part of the struggle is that a tiled wall is not often seen with a tub of that type.

9

u/Feltvin 13d ago

Good design, but the tile extends too far.

-20

u/Blackmambasomewhere 13d ago

Toilet next to bathtub? Bruh

6

u/lyssssa6 13d ago

What???? lol

11

u/Comment-Connoisseur1 13d ago

Do the rest of that wall in tile.

13

u/Frequent_Scholar0714 13d ago

Yes, the tile extends too far. But would the shower curtain conceal it? That's probably what the tile layer intended, to protect the wallpaper. 🛁

3

u/Torboni 13d ago

Who chose the tile to go out that far? Your mom or the contractor? I’d serious question the thinking of the contractor if they chose and decided to do it that way. The only time I’ve seen tile that far out or in such an awkward placement was when it was a botched job by someone who didn’t know what they were doing.

-6

u/Agricultural-Apple 13d ago

I think it looks good.

11

u/44scooby 13d ago

Extend the tiling to behind the toilet for hygienic reasons.

7

u/mimimines 13d ago

I love the wallpaper!

49

u/nutlikeothersquirls 13d ago

Yes, it extends half a tile too far. It would be fine if it didn’t go partially behind the toilet.

8

u/Live-Exit-20 13d ago

Not enough to have it redone unless the contractor is paying. With a shower curtain it’ll look fine

22

u/photohutch 13d ago edited 12d ago

Are you kidding? This look absolutely ridiculous and no shower curtain is going to hide how dumb this is and looks. OPs mom is paying for a service and wil be forced to live with this weird choice and looking at it everytime they walk into their bathroom. It 100% needs a vertical row of the tiles removed and redone properly. And the contractor should eat the expense for being hack - hopefully that way they learn and never repeat again.

-2

u/OperationEastern5855 13d ago

Agree. Put up a curtain and forget about it.

8

u/Vivid-Distance3226 13d ago

Yes, the tile should extend beyond tub about 3" to 4".

-1

u/Fantastic_Panic_9 13d ago

Have you ever consider that the wallpaper didn't extend enough? Racists.
