But there are some voice acting powerhouses already in the show like my all time favorite Fred Tatasciore. The show has a pretty good mix of friends from TWD, celebrities, and awesome voice actors.

Edit: I responded to the wrong comment, but I wanted to put that out there anyway lol

I’ve seen multiple threads with people whining that they “blew the budget on Mark Hamill, rather than hiring a professional VA.”

283

u/greeneggsnyams Apr 18 '26

I've read that about Stephen yeun, Sandra OH, Walton goggins, Seth Rogan, and mahershallah Ali, but I've always been under the impression that Mark hammil and JK Simmons were good investments under the invincible brand. Esp considering both are proficient voice actors

245

u/The_Flurr Apr 18 '26

Simmons was surely a great investment. He's a great VA who may have attracted viewers. I wouldn't be shocked if having his name attached helped the show get made.

Mark Hammil is a small enough part that I'm not sure it makes much difference, but surely it didn't cost the show that much for it.

225

u/New-Butterscotch-792 Apr 18 '26

Tbh, I can't imagine Omni Man without JK and Allen without Rogen.

Their voices add a lot of charm to the characters.

97

u/drinfernodds Apr 18 '26

They've also shown a stronger chemistry together than one might expect.

55

u/Rokusi Apr 18 '26

To be fair, who doesn't Allen have strong chemistry with?

u/Flipz100 Apr 18 '26

Also, Rogen is an EP on the show, I'm assuming he's probably not charging all that much in comparison to some of the other big names.

59

u/drunz Apr 18 '26

I give Rogen a pretty big pass. He is a known comic book buff and he has done multiple comic book movies/tv shows over the years.

16

u/DinosaurusWhen Dinosaurus Apr 18 '26

u/Nth_Brick THE GUY FROM FORTNITE Apr 18 '26

Hamill is a very well-established VA at this point, who spent decades with that as his main income stream, and his recurring role as The Joker didn't bankrupt any DCAU projects.

He's probably more expensive than some nobody VA, but not so much so that it outweighs the prestige value of having him on the cast.

30

u/ABadHistorian Apr 19 '26

Nope. At his level of expertise it's way more cost effective to hire him.

Mark Hammill is able to get exactly what producers want in ONE take. (Maybe not the directors, they are a bit pickier).

He's famous for it in the VA world. Literally going onto set on day one and becoming the character. That's... insanely good for VA work.

14

u/Nth_Brick THE GUY FROM FORTNITE Apr 19 '26

Valid point -- I suppose I mean on a per-hour basis.

If another actor costs half of Hamill's pay but takes three times as long to nail the character, Hamill makes more sense.

And as a side note, I really like that we have a smaller, recurring character, particularly just a base human, played by such a well-known and identifiable VA. It makes the world feel deeper to me, like Art's got his own stories to tell even if we'll never see them.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Equal-Ad-2710 Omnipotus Apr 19 '26

If anything he’s more of a VA then anything else

→ More replies (7)

34

u/ArtsyApoidean Dinosaurus Apr 18 '26

What makes that comment so funny is that Hammill isn't just a good voice actor, he is more a voice actor than he ever was Luke Skywalker. He took it up after he got into that disfiguring accident if I recall, and it's been the bulk of his career at this point.

Hammil is literally the Joker, from BTAS and most animated batman stuff over the last 30 years. Other Jokers often imitate hammil's.

23

u/ProphetPenguin Apr 19 '26

Just like how Casey Kasem WAS Shaggy until Matthew Lillard came along and became the next generation of Shaggy after Casey Kasem died.

Also invincible would not be the same show without Steven Yuen. He is genuinely so captivating as Mark.

6

u/ArtsyApoidean Dinosaurus Apr 19 '26

Absolutely agree. And this was Yuen's first big role right? Dude knocked it out of the park. He has a long and bright voice work career ahead if he wants one.

7

u/BiDiTi Apr 19 '26

Yeun played freaking Lance in Voltron!

And then there’s all the “normal” series regular roles he’s had as a VA.

17

u/Orc_tids Apr 18 '26

I mean with Yeun he's a Kirkman veteran and also a professional VA, Goggins was probably cheaper pre-Fallout, and Rogen is literally a producer on the show.

7

u/BiDiTi Apr 19 '26

Do you know who’s still pretty cheap, post-Fallout?

Walton Goggins.

Funniest shit has been watching morons who don’t know how cheap actual A-listers are for VA work throw tantrums about TV character actors driving up the price.

3

u/Immediate_Tank_3152 Adam Wilkens Apr 19 '26

Yeah it's ridiculous how people think that all the actors with a few lines are paid a "SHIT TON" of money just because they are A-listers

→ More replies (1)

82

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

Yeun’s been a working VA for over a decade!

Voltron, Arcadia, Tuca and Bertie…

Meanwhile, Oh’s doing the best work on the show…and I’m sure Rogen really stuck it to Rogen, when negotiating his fee.

It all boils down to the fact that that there is no way to release 6.5 hours of consistently good animation on a yearly basis.

13

u/ProphetPenguin Apr 19 '26

Anime doesn't do it either, the working conditions of anime studios are horrendous. The best season animation wise for MHA was Season 7 and Season 8 where in Season 7 they animated 21 episodes which is 4 less than their typical season and in Season 8 they only had to animate 11. That was a yearly release anime where they only have to do 21 minutes not the 46-60 minutes invincible animates.

4

u/BiDiTi Apr 19 '26

I love Bones.

Never forget or forgive what they did to LeMillion protecting her.

3

u/geek_of_nature Apr 19 '26

Yeun's first voice project was also in the Legend of Korra, in which Simmons was one of the stars.

2

u/MtnMaiden Apr 18 '26

You can barely recognize mark hammil, wouldn't know him as Art the tailor

6

u/ArtsyApoidean Dinosaurus Apr 18 '26

I never checked Art's VA but always felt like he had some incredible depth in the performances -- not shocked it's Hammil.

There’s someone downthread talking about how Justice League didn’t blow their budget on celebrity VAs, haha!

27

u/Rokusi Apr 18 '26

I wonder when Mark Hamil really took off as a big name in voice acting. Did the showrunners think they were hiring a professional voice actor when they recruited him as the Joker in Batman the Animated Series, or did they think they were hiring Luke Skywalker to play a murderous clown?

37

u/PentagramJ2 Apr 18 '26

Mark stated on Conan decades ago that got invited kinda just as a professional courtesy between contacts in Hollywood, he just nailed it

8

u/funkthewhales Apr 18 '26

Yea apparently joker was initially going to be voiced by Tim Curry, but they decided to switch to Mark last minute.

8

u/ProphetPenguin Apr 19 '26

Tim Curry also woulda slapped tho

3

u/stlorca Apr 19 '26

I would pay CASH MONEY to hear his audition tape.

8

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

Sure, they might have thought they were hiring Mozart from Amadeus!

But yeah, it was pretty much just stage work before BTAS.

8

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Apr 18 '26

Pretty sure they just heard his voice for the role and were like “yeah that’s fucking Joker” because I mean it is. The first time you hear Hamills voice come out of the Joker it’s like the most fitting voice ever.

yep lmao, seeing a comment whining about them 'wasting money' on Mark Hamill is how I found out he's in the show lol

31

u/FireZord25 Apr 18 '26

Feel like there should be a term for forcing people to focus on criticisms so outlandish that it downplays the validity in them.

We have complaints about Mark Hamill for voice acting budget, when there are still other celebs being cast as overpaid VAs. That's after that trend of comparing the show's quality to Jujutsu Kaisen, despite there legit being other anime that are half as good and less as stressing, still far more consistently good (if not great) than Invincible's.

21

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

The JJK comps crack me up.

Leave aside MAPPA’s working conditions, etc - JJK has released twelve episodes in the last two years…and they’re 22 minutes each, with a 2 minute OP and 2 minute ED!

27

u/William_The_Fat_Krab Apr 18 '26

Whoever said that probably had a maraca as a head. Mark Hamil is several times a better VA than a actor. His range could fill a entire room of different voices.

3

u/ABadHistorian Apr 19 '26

Anyone complaining about this has no idea how production of these shows works.

They could hire professional voice actors, and those rates and reshoots may be worth it.

I doubt it though. Sandra Oh made my GF watch invincible. I don't think any professional voice actor could do that and my GF IS An EX VOICE ACTOR.

8

5

u/RevolutionarySeven7 Apr 18 '26

He was LEGENDARY with Isamu Dyson in Macross Pluss

59

u/Grumiocool Apr 18 '26

It’s always strange how people online act like there’s some hard diving line between voice and screen actors

100

u/forthewatch39 Apr 18 '26

Some actors struggle with voice acting, it’s not as easy as some think. For instance, actors in live action use their whole body to convey their messaging. Facial expressions, body movement. Not every actor can express themselves as well with just their voice.

27

u/RunningHorseDog Apr 18 '26

Yes, and relatedly I think this is why many successful VAs did many years grinding their careers on the theatrical stages (plays, musicals, etc.). It makes sense; even if you do act with your body and facial expressions on stage, your voice has to be more expressive since most of the audience will be visually inhibited by the literal physical distance.

At every con I've ever gone to, most VAs talk about themselves or a majority of their colleagues getting their start there.

19

u/Munchlax99 Cecil Was Right Apr 18 '26

An example to back up your statement: Chris Pratt as Super Mario (and supposedly Garfield but I don’t believe anyone actually saw that movie)

27

u/Grumiocool Apr 18 '26

But he was also Emmit in the lego movie where he did a great job

He was just miscast as Mario (and Garfield probably), even if the movie was live action he wouldn’t be that good as Mario

12

u/notTheRealSU FLAXANS DID NOTHING WRONG Apr 18 '26

I feel like Chris Pratt does best in the "normal guy" role, whether that be voice acting or live acting. Emmit, Peter Quill, Owen Grady, they're just normal guys and he does great as them.

13

13

u/GrumpySatan The Mauler Twins Apr 18 '26

Cuz there kinda is. Its like a GP doctor versus a heart surgeon. Sure, its the same profession but different specializations and they develop different skillsets.

Voice Acting and Screen Acting are specializations that require different skills be developed. You can't really jump from one to the other without developing those first (which is doable, just as a doctor can transition).

If you try to play a voice role the same way as a screen role, you're performance will come off flat and un-emotive. Screen acting focuses a lot on facial expressions and body language. This is why a lot of people don't like movie stars being cast for voice roles. Its a very common problem.

VA work requires a lot more vocal work and overacting to make up for this loss of information, more vocal health because its a lot harder on the throat muscles then traditional acting, etc. Its arguably closer to being a singer in training.

6

u/The_Flurr Apr 18 '26

Should also mention stage acting, which is somewhere in the middle but also not. It requires a lot "larger" voice and physical work.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Beast_Chips Apr 18 '26

There is, similarly with theatre acting. They are all different disciplines within acting requiring a different skillset, of course with some crossover. Not Invincible specifically because it seems like the big roles are all well established VAs (who also do screen work), but there is some controversy around screen actors taking VA roles because they bring in more publicity.

→ More replies (4)

16

u/oketheokey Invinciboy Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

I mean, there kinda is

Look at Keanu Reeves, great actor but his voice acting is really dull

Same for Arnold Schwarzenegger, even though his voice being the way it is is part of his charm

17

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

So much of Keanu’s appeal as a performer comes from his physicality.

17

u/jews4beer Apr 18 '26

Look no further than John Wick. The dude excels at action. His voice is secondary.

16

u/Wboy2006 Apr 18 '26

I mean, it depends on his direction. I felt like he was pretty damn good in the Sonic movie 3, while he was absolutely terrible in the movie level in Shadow Generations.

Direction is very important in voice acting too

3

u/oketheokey Invinciboy Apr 18 '26

He was passable in Movie 3 but it still felt like he has extremely little range, especially compared to Ben Schwartz who actually has a really rich performance as Sonic

3

u/Grumiocool Apr 18 '26

The two examples you gave are actors who also considered (by a lot of people not me specifically) bad screen actor but are good at physical stunts and performances. If you want opposite examples Jack black and Robin Williams are both good screen and voice actors

When I say there’s not a hard line between the two types of acting I don’t mean everyone who’s a screen actor will be a good at voice acting but that there’s a lot more overlap then people give credit for. Just because there’s black and white ends of a gradient doesn’t mean there’s not a gradient

11

u/AAAFMB Apr 18 '26

Look at Keanu Reeves, great actor

He's really not.

7

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

Keanu absolutely is a great actor…he’s just an incredibly limited one.

7

Grey Griffin's already doing it, with multiple characters with big speaking roles like Amanda/Monster Girl, Eve's stepmom, Shrinking Rae, Olga, and Thula, and I swear she's done some background characters too. It's awesome.

172

u/BakedWizerd Apr 18 '26

I mean yeah, she’s in that “Tara Strong” category where she’s recognizable but can alter her voice enough to play multiple characters.

I think Ross Marquand is another example (Immortal, Robot, Kursk, Aquarus), but I can see the argument for more VAs with range capability.

Matt and Troy can do side characters, good guys, or big bads.

41

u/drac0nic180 Apr 18 '26

I'm just wondering why barely any of the most prolific VAs are in this show: John DiMaggio, Nolan North, Troy Baker, Yuri Lowenthal, Hynden Welch, Jason Spisak, Corey Burton, James Arnold Taylor, Jason Marsden. I don't think Debra Wilson is even in this, and she's in everything from the past 10 years.

When was the last time he was in a live action movie not related to Star Wars?

Edit: wait, I forgot he actually had a role in some movie called the Machine three years ago. But I don't remember any other movies that Mark Hamill played in.

u/Pulp501 Apr 18 '26

Kingsman but that was over ten years ago now.

3

u/marioluigi79 Apr 18 '26

He was also in The Long Walk last year

He's amazing at it too. Games, as well.

He was type cast as luke so went into voice acting which, frankly, we all benefit from.

Simmons definitly the best investment. Nolan is the character that brought most people into the show, myself included. Don't get me wrong, many voice actors did a bang up job with the voices, but I could see them having a different voice. Simmons is always inseparable from his characters

9

u/_Valisk Apr 18 '26

I personally can’t picture anyone but Steven Yeun as Mark, but that’s probably because his voice is so ingrained in my mind.

At this point get the whole crew of Critical Role in here and they'll voice over the entire cast. That's great voice over work with money to spare.

17

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Apr 18 '26

No I need Dispatch season 2 ASAP

12

u/MikeArrow Apr 18 '26

I'll play it only if there's a Malevola romance option.

3

u/Cpt_Tripps Apr 19 '26

I loved dispatch but was super disappointed with the dating options on my second play through.

And that money saved won’t make a dent in the cost of pushing 6.5h of animation in 12 months.

5

u/Hoodman1987 Apr 18 '26

I'm inclined to agree. They're fantastic.

22

u/Alternative_Owl7786 Apr 18 '26

I'm shocked they haven't tried to get Keith David. He's such an icon in the voice acting field that he's in damn near everything

8

u/Steridire Apr 18 '26

Honestly would have liked him as Thragg

3

u/JustAThinkingGuy7 Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

I could see Neil Kaplan as Thragg. I would like to hear Keith David's Battle Beast though or maybe Space Racer

Does anyone ACTUALLY know the budget allocation? Can anyone point to actual proof of how much JK Simmons is taking from the budget?

People like to throw that around as a negative but does anyone actually have any values at all? Voice acting does not command anywhere near the same price as live acting.

23

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

If they took a beat to understand any of that stuff, they wouldn’t get the chance to be ANGRY!!!!

14

u/Steridire Apr 18 '26

JK and the other major VAs are probably on insane money by now for VA work, this is the #1 show for one of the biggest companies in history and he's irreplaceable. They can't make the show without him and this show brings them more customers than anything else on their streaming service. Yeun and JK are making fuck you money, the other main VAs are making good money too but not the same I'd imagine.

18

u/BiDiTi Apr 18 '26

…and it’s worth adding that “insane money for VA work” doesn’t actually move the needle, relative to the animation budget.

16

u/BoobeamTrap Apr 18 '26

I don’t think people understand how little VAs make compared to live action.

3

u/serendipitouswaffle Apr 19 '26

This lmao. I really feel like all this speculation is going nowhere sometimes

6

u/BoobeamTrap Apr 18 '26

So no, no one actually knows it’s just all vibes?

6

u/lostinthesauceguy Apr 18 '26

irreplaceable is the right word. i expect Yeun JK and Oh literally could name their price and Amazon would just have to pony up. they're inextricably linked.

It’s became a running joke at this point between kirkman and Cranston. They offer him a role every season and he always rejects, it’s nothing serious

12

u/Mr_ME621 Apr 18 '26

Who would Brian have played is my question

12

u/lostinthesauceguy Apr 18 '26

the other secret service guy with John Hamm

People don’t like to mention how a fuck load of the voice actors have big ties to robert kirkman I feel like that’s a factor you can’t ignore

7

u/RiflemanLax Apr 18 '26

I honestly don’t care about whether the person is known or not. Frankly, experienced voice actors are better than known celebrities.

One of my favorite cartoon movies is Titan AE, but for the story/plot. Because despite having some marquee actors, the voice acting is kinda ass on that film.

5

u/MaxShea Apr 18 '26

The casting ended up great.

3

u/Shantotto11 Apr 18 '26

They already have Kevin Michael Richardson and Grey Griffin. I’m surprised they hadn’t already commissioned Tara Strong and Cree Summer as well.

51

u/jc6146 Apr 18 '26

This is the thing that’s irked me most about the production of Invincible. The voice acting is spectacular and probably the best part of the show. But it’s also probably why the animation is lackluster sometimes. When you spend most of the budget on voice actors it screws everyone else.

I think I should state again. I’m not saying the voice acting is bad or anything but I do think that Amazon doesn’t need to hire every famous voice actor they can find

46

u/timdr18 Apr 18 '26

Voice actors do not make nearly as much as people think, especially cameos. Even the main characters probably need less than a week to record all their lines and they probably do it from home. If you cut the VA budget to industry standard and put the difference to animation you probably would not see much of a difference.

11

u/shawn1213 Apr 18 '26

I guarantee you walton goggins simu liu jk simmons Arron Paul Mark hammil etc do not come cheap

19

u/timdr18 Apr 18 '26

They’re probably a bit more expensive than your average working VA, but the difference is probably what, 10k here or there? Even adding all of that up it wouldn’t really move the needle with how much animation costs on a yearly schedule.

I think you're reaching a lot of conclusions with no real evidence. None of us have any idea about the shows budget

7

u/padfoot12111 Apr 18 '26

That, and the fact they the blew the series animation budget in destroying the planet.

Gonna be a lot of pngvincibles to cover for that

If Bryan Cranston voiced Thragg oh man it would go hard

2

u/Proper-Pineapple-717 Apr 18 '26

I stg the only VAs people know are Troy Baker and Matt Mercer & friends

2

u/wegwerpaanstekers Apr 18 '26

Troy baker is amazing

2

u/Mesastafolis1 Apr 19 '26

A Cranston Thragg would have gone hard AF especially since he can give it that same thespian energy that Lee Pace gives. Unfortunate but they don’t need to have every goddamn actor on the show
