Megathread Johnson County Voting Information

Note: We'll keep this updated as best as we can, but election information can, unfortunately, change quickly. For the latest, reach out to the auditor's office in-person @ 913 S. Dubuque St in IC, via phone @ 319-356-6004, or online @ https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor. If you notice an error, PM me or send a modmail.

Deadlines

  • Mon, Oct 19, 5 PM: Last day to pre-register, and last day to request a mailed absentee ballot. The request has to be in the Auditor's office by 5, not postmarked.
  • Mon, Nov 2: Last day of in-person early voting.
  • Tue, Nov 3: Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM.
  • Generally speaking, mailed ballots must reach the Auditor's office by 8 PM on Election Day.

If you missed the registration deadline: You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. You'll need ID and proof of address.

Check your registration and find your polling place

Absentee voters: Iowa has no permanent absentee list, so if you voted by mail last time you still need a new request this time.

College students: You can choose to register at either your school or home address. If you register at school, you just need dorm name and room number. If you register at home, you vote there or absentee.

Followed by man in the Ped Mall - Police Report made

• Upvotes

Disclaimer: extremely odd behavior that caused us to report to the police, who are checking on it. Do not use this as reason to harass anyone who you think fits the description, this is more of a “be wary” post.

Around 2:30pm today, a bald white man in his mid 40s - early 50s was following my friend around the ped mall. Followed my friend into critical hit games, out of critical hit games, into bread garden (even with my friend weaving through aisles and people). Fortunately my friend lost him and is now safe and no longer in Iowa City. Police report has been made and they are looking into it.

He would stare and smile at my friend from across critical hit and whenever my friend would look back. Black north face quarter zip with an Iowa Hawkeye logo on the front, blue jeans. Last seen headed north from bread garden around 2:30.

This is only an awareness post about odd behavior from a stranger—again, the police have been notified and given all details. Do not use this to justify any witch hunt.

done accepting non-MD medical appointments at UIHC

I get that they're trying to save money and not hire enough docs. But I've just scheduled my first medical appointment in CR with an actual MD/PhD who has an actual scientific background and actual medical training, completed residency and all, because I am done with the harebrained not-enough-info-or-background-or-training treatment I'm getting from assorted nurses and, to my surprise, PAs. I just had one guy so embarrassed to chart the word "breast" that he decided the problem would be on my "anterior chest wall", which is a different part of the body, and another's decided they're a social-media expert on a medication, rather than using actual prescribing guidelines. Yet another suggested brightly that I have a major surgery to remove a healthy organ so that I can reduce infinitesimally a risk associated with another drug. This isn't new; I've stood bleeding in an exam room after an accident with a young RN wanting to do an ROS before administering first aid (because the bandages were in another room with people in it, and she was afraid to interrupt), had to ask my own "do I need a _____" questions before getting to "oh yeah that'd be good", and had a wound treated so poorly over a month that when I got to Mercy they asked if I'd been burned (and then made healing start happening visibly within three days). I won't even talk about what we endured in L&D.

Nurses and nursing are important. PAs can be a tremendous boon and better at clinical care than MDs, and I've advised people who wanted to go into medicine but really didn't want the limelight to consider PA. But this is ridiculous and I'm too old now for poor medical care. I still get decent care from MDs when I can see them at UIHC, but the scheduling's insane. Downvote away, all ye nurses and husbands of. I don't care. I don't like driving and it's insane that I have to go 30 miles instead of two for decent care here, but that's where we are now.

Needing a great do-it-all handyman

Hello, everyone. We are moving to the Iowa City/Co

ralville area this week. Does anyone know a really good handyman who can do a bunch of things for us, including putting a screen door on our patio, installing a ringtone, installing a night light outside the garage, installing 2 glass shower doors, building a fence, and hanging a large mirror on our living room wall? Thanks so much in advance. Excited to be moving there.

Shop/Service Recommendations Manual typewriter repair

I recently purchased a 1979 Brother Citation manual typewriter. It types beautifully and is very clean. The problem is the ribbon isn’t advancing properly. I’m not sure that I have the ribbon installed correctly. If it’s spooled correctly then it might be mechanical. I’m looking for someone with manual typewriter experience that can take a look at it
Thanks in advance!

Unethical donations to the Yes JoCo Jail campaign

Several construction companies who will be bidding to the jail have donated massive amounts to the campaign for its passage. It feels unethical to provide financial support to a government project which will provide a small fortune to these builders.

Here are some examples:
*Michael E Hodge (of Hodge Construction)—$5,000
*Robert McComas (of McComas Lacina)—$1,000
*King’s Materials—$5,000
*Plumbers and Pipefitters union—$2,500
*Advanced Electrical Services—$2,500
*Teamsters Local—$2,500

Other notable donors:
*David R. Barker (an Iowa Republican official)—$1,000
*Nicolet National Bank—$5,000
*Sheriff Brad Kunkel—$1,000
*William A Waldie—$5,000
*Sarah M. Richardson (owner of Barker Apartments)—$2,000
*RSV Property Management—$5,000

Look up the project at this link:. https://webapp.iecdb.iowa.gov/publicReports/searchable-database
(Hint: the committee to search for is #BALLOT51666 - Yes JoCo)

Iowa City Water Utility Payment Issues

How do you all pay your water utility bill?

Our bill due date changes every month (sometimes at beginning of month, sometimes in middle, sometimes at the end - no apparent rhyme or reason), and there is not an option for auto-pay, leaving us to frequently have late payment fees.

It’s pretty frustrating, but I’m not sure if it’s a me problem or a common problem.

Community Looking for local run club recommendations

Hi all
I’m looking to check out a local running group after running on my own for a while and now feeling bored running by myself. I’m a 40 something old woman and slow paced so looking for a group that welcomes all paces. I noticed Iowa City Run club on instagram and wondering if there are similar local clubs out there? I noticed they meet one evening a week but maybe I missed more meeting posts. I will look more into their meet times.
I’m also open to finding people maybe in these groups that enjoy other areas of fitness like cycling and strength training (I’m newish at this) to maybe connect with. I feel I’ve been isolated with my fitness journey and finding those in a welcoming environment that share similar goals.
Thanks! 😊

Looking for local paint color consultant or similar

Hello all!

We've recently purchased a home in the college green park area and are looking to pick colors out for interior paint. We're not looking for an interior designer, we'd just like to hire someone to help make sane color selections that won't drive us crazy after we've painted and lived in the home for awhile.

It's a 1920's home and has a lot of reddish wood trim and floors that are new to us from a color perspective. We hired an artist friend to help with colors of our current home and were really pleased with the results, so hoping to find the same in Iowa City.

Does anyone do this kind of work or has someone they recommend?

Thanks in advance, we're pretty excited to be close to finally moving

No Warnings at Coralville Dam spillway

Why aren't there warnings at the Coralville Dam? I have been there many times and seen it has a recurculating current at the outlet. Aren't there warnings about those at many other dams? Seems strange to have no warnings at a place where so many people go.

Men's Walk and Talk

We are Alex, Andy, and Nik. We’ve been living in Iowa City for many years. We've decided to see if men would like to walk and talk twice a month locally.

Our purpose is twofold:

  1. To give men a non-judgmental space to talk about what’s going on for us.
  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.

Please note, this is not a religious or politically affiliated group.

Here’s why this matters. Cigna and other major organizations regularly share research confirming that over 50% of people in the US feel “sometimes or always alone.” Such levels of isolation can have health impacts equal to smoking. Lonely people face higher levels of heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, cancer and so on. Many men struggle with loneliness even as we are busy working, caring for our kids, dealing with the daily demands of life. But research shows that men with a robust circle of friendships live longer healthier lives, have better marriages/relationships, feel more optimistic and are more successful in our personal and professional lives.

Cigna research: https://newsroom.thecignagroup.com/loneliness-in-america

Although we have some sense of how these talks might begin, the conversations will go where they go depending on the needs of each man. Men of any age are welcome to join us.

Rules:

  1. No politics
  2. Be yourself
  3. Respect confidentiality

The rules we use on our walks are meant to help us dial down to the personal and talk about what’s going on for us in our own lives. They are not absolute. They are guidelines.

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy and we are not therapists. We are not doing coaching. We are not doing men’s work. We are simply sharing information about how we are creating real, lasting, local friendships for men in our neighborhood. That’s it.

If you’d like to join us on a walk, send us an email to [walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com](mailto:walkingtalkingmeniowacity@gmail.com) with why this idea appeals to you. We’ll respond to all emails. We look forward to hearing from you.

When: Sunday, October 18th, 3pm.

Where: Meet at the parking lot of Terry Trueblood Rec Center pavilion: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pQZrVyhJ2pVgGPnA8

The walks are inspired by this story

CR to IC train

How cool would a train running from CR to IC be? It would help so many people commute. I understand this isn’t totally feasible but the idea is fun.
