💬 Discussion / Question Celtic house blessing question

Hello, I'm in Australia, and my friend (Irish father) spoke to me today about a sign that her Irish grandparents had on the front of their house, which was in Gaelic. She said that her grandparents said it used to be on all of the houses back in the day, a blessing.

It's a long shot, but does anyone know what I am talking about?

I would love to find out what it is so that we can make some up for our houses. I have Irish heritage, also.

Thank you! 💜

💬 Discussion / Question Why don't all Ulster Protestant communities have Scottish accents?

Why is it only parts of County Antrim who have this accent? Towns like Ballymena, Ballymoney and the north coast.

Belfast doesn't have this accent nor do the Protestant communities anywhere else like Portadown, Dungannon and Cookstown.

My assumption is that an accent like Belfast had more of an influence from northern English people. The influence of Ulster Irish should also be mentioned but I don't know how much that would have influenced an accent like Belfast. I assume the accents west of Lough Neagh had more influence from Ulster Irish.

💬 Discussion / Question Why did O’Neill flee Ireland?

In hindsight the flight of the earls is remembered as *the* end of native Irish aristocracy, and the next 3 centuries of colonialism directly follow that loss of any real native base of power. m

Now I doubt the man who had led the Irish in the Nine Years War suddenly decided he didn’t actually care about Ireland, so what were his motives for abdicating his titles and leaving the country never to return? Was he trying to rally support in Catholic Europe?

This time taken from "Dear John: The John Mackay Letters", a collection of crank letters sent to various vestiges of the great and good at the time, as well as their replies.

Up the workers!

💬 Discussion / Question Young Historical Society Ireland

Hope this is allowed!

If any of ye interested a few of my old university histsoc friends and I are starting one more focused on young adults after trying to get into other local history groups and these being full of serious lifelong historians.

We want to create a place where young Irish people can engage with history without feeling the pressure of being an expert. Take a look here if you’re interested: instagram page

Sound 👍
