Ron Carter and Bill Frisell at Birdland
Just back from seeing the sublime jazz duo of bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Bill Frisell at Birdland -a joyous jazz-standard journey by two masters. Ron is 89 (!) and playing better than ever, and they explored the harmonic nuance of these songs like they had been born playing them. They are playing for I think one more night, if you're in the NYC area and can make it, go!

I went to the late set on Wednesday. Lucky to be so close to two masters in a classic club setting.
At the end of one of the pieces, Carter played these high-pitched harmonics. I know harmonics are tied to like specific frets on guitars like 5th and 7th, so seeing someone do that on a fretless upright blew my mind, maybe the highlight of the night.

So bummed to miss this - do you think his quartet and big band are similar / as great? I see future dates.

If you made a list of everyone that either of them have ever played with then you'd probably have a very long list but what a glorious list it would be!

And yet, I wonder if Carter has ever played with a Downtown Scene participant like Frisell, and by the same token if Frisell has ever played with a traditionalist like Carter. Would have loved to have seen this show.

I know that Frisell played with Jim Hall, but I agree - worlds colliding in the best way. I would have loved to see this as well!

Never miss a chance to see these two masters. I saw Bill Frisell play a duo with Charlie Haden not too long before he passed and it was also incredible.
