Discussion How brutal is the show

I am watching the mcu with my boyfriend, and I do want to show him Jessica jones which I havent seen yet. And I do know themes of SA and manipulation play a part in the show.

How bad is it? How graphic is it or how much does it show? Specifically with the SA part. If possible wanna know the details to warn him in advance.

Good depiction of the trauma, without depicting the act

Season One is one of the greatest in MCU TV history IMO.

It's not graphic, but it's definitely impactful. I didn't recall any sexual assault on camera. But you definitely see the fallout from such evil.

There is one in early S3, the woman Trish saves in the alleyway; not super graphic and it's the beginning stages of the assault but yeah

The show is not graphic, we don’t see any instances of sexual assault (with the exception of one non-consensual kiss set in the past). There is extensive discussion about rape, gaslighting, manipulation and abuse, all handled in a manner that takes the issues seriously.

Season 1 deals primarily with the psychological trauma.

Some of the violence is graphic. But the SA isn’t.

A lot of the SA isn't shown, but it is talked about

Not too graphic (though there are aftermath scenes of mutilation in the later part of S1). The SA is not shown really at all. Also, if you have issues with violence against pregnant women…there’s one brief scene in S1 that’s kinda rough

Hes just not good with the themes. Even if they're not as graphic he just cant handle it personally. But ill still watch it

I went into this show completely oblivious to who or what her character even was. Safe to say, the first season essentially sent me down the rabbit hole. The third season (for me anyways) won't make any sense without watching the other shows.

It was much more graphic in the comic... far more.

I think you both will be fine. I am jealous you get to see it for the first time :)

I wish I could see it like that again.

There are multiple instances (used on occasion for impact) of graphic violence (w/ blood/gore) in the show, and there are also other contextually graphic things that happen in S1. S2 and S3 have a similar level of graphic violence moments as S1, although S3 might be more intense due to the context of what happens in the season.

One thing I appreciated is how the show gets the balance between showing trauma and not exploiting it. The abuse comes through in the psychological aftermath, and honestly that lands harder than if they showed graphic scenes. Did anyone else think that approach made Kilgrave even more unnerving?

I don’t think anything in the show is really graphic and even when they talk about the SA it’s not in detail. I only just finished S1 and didn’t think it was that great really.
