History / Education "Until 1948, hummus was an Arab food that wasn't consumed by the majority of European Jewish settlers," notes Dafna Hirsch, author of the newly published book: "The Israeli Career of Hummus: Colonial Appropriation, Authenticity, and Distinction" (Indiana University Press).

Imagine thinking hummus is the reason why the 'conflict' never ends - as opposed to the fucking genocide being carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people?

What a bunch of bulshit. Humus was never a big deal in the arabic cousin. It is until today, for most arabs, a salad that to eat in the morning with some pita and olives. It wasn't the humus that we know today, which is a whole plate just humus and a pita. It wasn't smooth like we eat today, it was fairly roughly grinded more like Mashawsha.

Still, it's a book about a settler-colonial State's appropriation of a vulnerable indigenous population.
A vulnerable indigenous population that Israel continues to abuse/murder/exploit/steal from, etc.

Serious Eats had an article on Palestinian food a while back and the comments were crazy, the need to erase every aspect of Palestinian identity. Commenters were claiming that each dish was actually Israeli, since Palestinians do not have a culture or history. Wonder what those people say about the bagel not originally being Jewish.
•
u/specialistsets Non-denominational Jul 19 '26
Wonder what those people say about the bagel not originally being Jewish.
Bagel doesn't mean any round bread. Bagels as we know them are distinctly Ashkenazi Jewish, and the common modern style in particular originated in New York. None of that is debated, regardless of the existence of other circular breads that are not the same thing as bagels.
•
u/Foolazul Pro-Palestinian, ant-Zionist, anti-religious extremism Jul 19 '26
I should have said the “bagel’s origins.”
•
u/specialistsets Non-denominational Jul 19 '26
I don't understand your argument, bagels are bagels
•
u/Foolazul Pro-Palestinian, ant-Zionist, anti-religious extremism Jul 19 '26
My comment is based on this article contending that bagels have their origins in Arabic cultures: https://www.seriouseats.com/kaak-ancient-bagel-arabic-origins
Eastern European Jews definitely followed with that long tradition and came up with bagels. Bagels are Jewish, but their origin is deeper than that.
Just how food history works. If it wasn’t suggesting a Palestinian or other Arab may have had a hand in the bagel’s history, it wouldn’t be controversial at all. But since Palestinian bodies, culture and history must be erased in order to continue on with justifying and obscuring a more than century long colonization, we are where we are.
•
u/specialistsets Non-denominational Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
The author is presenting this as her personal theory, but there is no scholarly research or evidence to suggest Eastern European bagels come from Arabic ka'ak, it's a wild claim. Ring-shaped breads are found all over the world, and bagels are bagels.
But since Palestinian bodies, culture and history must be erased in order to continue on with justifying and obscuring a more than century long colonization, we are where we are.
My friend, bagels have nothing to do with Palestine, the modern food we call bagels originated in New York City via Eastern Europe.

Yeah I’ve used them quite a bit and the general vibe seems to be they just do their thing and act like a normal sane person would, regardless of what some extremists want them to do. An article on Palestinian food? Seems normal enough, but since a lot of powerful people want them to be erased as a people, a culture, a history, everything then showing off their food is just too much apparently.

Do you have more on the Bagel thing?
I can only find sources saying it came from Polish Jews.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagel explains it. Though I'd say that once a food has been associated with a group of people for hundreds of years, it's fine to claim it, but I'm open to be corrected. It also doesn't seem like an act of appropriation, more like unknown origin.
•
u/Foolazul Pro-Palestinian, ant-Zionist, anti-religious extremism Jul 18 '26
https://www.seriouseats.com/kaak-ancient-bagel-arabic-origins
Yeah, I agree doesn’t seem like appropriation, although I’m sure nowadays the argument is it has exclusively Jewish origins, in order to align with the general erasure of Palestinians.

Is this not common knowledge??
Sabra is an Israeli company for gods sake. I feel like anyone who tries it should be able to tell just how devoid of soul and culture it is. Especially if you’ve had real hummus before, the type you get at that random hookah bar every town has, you know there’s absolutely no comparison.
Real hummus I could eat for 3 square meals a day and genuinely feel great. If I eat sabra once I’m gonna feel like shit for the rest of the day cause of how processed and lifeless it is. Idk how you even manage to fuck up hummus of all things, but leave it to Israel to always find a way to bastardize Arab culture…

This is something that I have always wondered, but what role did Mizrahi Jews play in intorducing Ashkenazim to Arab/Levantine foods? There is always a lot of talk of appropriation, but is it 100 percent that Ashkenazim appropriated directly from Palestinians or the Mizahim?
•
u/Enough_Comparison816 Arab Jew, Shomer Masoret, ex-Israeli Jul 21 '26
Just fyi, “Mizrahi” refers to Jews of any region from SWANA, Caucus region, India, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan. So it’s not just Arab lands. It’s many different areas with their own diverse cultures, languages, and cuisines. But we are all grouped together under “Mizrahi” despite me as an Arab Jew having little in common with a Mountain Jew from Caucus. Sry for the rant
•
u/BerlinJohn1985 Jewish post-Zionist Jul 21 '26
Sorry, this is new information for me. Who groups Jews from the Caucuses, India, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan under the category of Mizrahi? I always understood Jews who are Mizrahi to be from predominately Arab or North African countries. Jews from other areas would have their ethnic terminology, Bukharian, Bene Israel, or the term Mountain Jew that you used etc. I apologize for my own ignorance, but I did not realize that people use the term to describe people from such a wide swath of land and don't bother distinguishing.
•
u/Enough_Comparison816 Arab Jew, Shomer Masoret, ex-Israeli Jul 22 '26
It’s gets confusing, because there is such a thing as “Mizrahi” culture within the Zionist state, in which all these different ethnicities have fused together into a single culture. But it’s good to keep in mind that it encompasses much more than just Arab Jews
•
u/TurkeyFisher Jewish Anti-Zionist Jul 20 '26
The Mizrahim were used as a justification for why the middle-eastern and especially Yemeni culture was Jewish, not just Arab, but it was still very much a project of inventing a national identity. In comparison, Sephardic traditions were mostly ignored or suppressed, and both Mizrahim and Sephardics were largely marginalized. Here's a good article about it: https://csalateral.org/forum/cultural-constructions-race-racism-middle-east-north-africa-southwest-asia-mena-swana/cooption-erasure-mizrahi-culture-israel-crasnow/

So apparently in the rHummus sub, Zionists are saying Israel invented it.
- I've cross-posted this elsewhere and Zionists are triggered af about it.
This article is not about Jews - it's about Israel, as a State, & the Zionist movement appropriating from the vulnerable, indigenous, Palestinian population.
Example:
Appropriation of Arab cultural items continued among the “idealistic workers” of the “second immigration wave” (1904–14). The first workers arrived in Palestine with the intention of becoming agricultural proletariat in the Jewish colonies. Yet the colonists preferred to hire Arab workers, who were cheaper and more experienced. The workers’ predicament was solved through the establishment of collectivist agricultural settlements (kibbutz and moshav), which guaranteed the Jewish hold of purchased land and monopoly over labor.64 Among the workers, the group most associated with the appropriation of Arab cultural practices and products was the Hashomer paramilitary organization, which operated between 1909 and 1920. Hashomer members adopted Bedouin and Circassian forms of dress, practiced various Arab customs (such as performing a “fantasia” on horseback), and used Arab words and expressions in their spoken Yiddish.65 The earliest case I came across of eating hummus bi-tahine and roasted meat in an Arab restaurant was written by a former member of Hashomer and refers to the early 1910s.66 Gur Alroey describes the confrontational attitude of Hashomer, which often provoked violence rather than defended against it.67 Not only Arabs but also colonists who employed Arab workers were subject to violence and threats.68 In Hashomer, the principle of masculine revival through struggle with the “natives” in order to inherit and become the natives received its most lucid expression.69
- Hirsch, Dafna. The Israeli Career of Hummus: Colonial Appropriation, Authenticity, and Distinction (pp. 35-36). (Function). Kindle Edition.
Normie subs are completely astroturfed with pro-Israel trolls making abusive comments - and in this case, whenever someone posts a picture of Palestinian hummus.
The level of abject stupidity and gleeful ignorance by Zionists online is truly something to behold.
Like cartoon villains, they embrace it.
Excerpt from the book:
This critique is rooted in the understanding that the settler-colonial logic of elimination of the native operates not only through physical dispossession of land and displacement of people and communities but also through the symbolic appropriation and erasure of indigenous cultural forms.20 Israeli cultural appropriation, in this view, seeks to sever the connection between Palestinians and their cultural heritage, presenting Israel as the rightful bearer of indigenous culture.
- Hirsch, Dafna. The Israeli Career of Hummus: Colonial Appropriation, Authenticity, and Distinction (pp. 4-5). (Function). Kindle Edition.
Contrary to what Zionist cultists will insist, there are material consequences for cultural appropriation.
The consequences of cultural appropriation, moreover, are not confined to the symbolic realm. They are seen as entangled with material inequalities, economic exploitation, and the dehumanization of Palestinians. In a petition initiated by Palestinians working in the food industry in the US, and circulated in late October 2023, it was written that “Israel has long weaponized food, erasing Palestinian people while claiming their cuisine. Here in the U.S., the appropriation of Palestinian foods as ‘Israeli’ has led to more than Israelis profiting off of Palestinian culture; it is an erasure that has had real implications for Palestinians. It allows us to negate their cultural currency, and turn our attention away with more ease when we see Palestinian death.”26
[...]Indeed, Israel’s claiming hummus and falafel as its national dishes looks like a textbook case of cultural appropriation. But what exactly is cultural appropriation? Despite its present ubiquity, cultural appropriation remains an ambiguous and undertheorized concept. In its currently dominant sense of taking cultural assets from subordinated groups, it emerged in public discourse in the 1980s and began to receive substantial scholarly attention in the late 1990s.28 Earlier uses were of a less-pejorative and even positive nature, regarding appropriation as something the powerless do or as something everybody does—an ordinary aspect of everyday life (sometimes defined, in the case of appropriation of items from other cultures, as “culture crossing,” “cultural borrowing,” or “transculturation”).29 Today, however, this concept is mostly used to denote the unauthorized taking of material or intellectual cultural assets by members of a dominant culture from a dominated or disadvantaged one (sometimes termed “misappropriation” or simply “theft”).30 As such, it is understood to be a motivated act, associated with power and entailing material and/or symbolic harm.31 These may include lack of recognition of the source culture, financial profit at the expense of its creative labor, degradation of its cultural integrity and viability, and alteration or misrepresentation of the appropriated content.32

The last screenshot is about willful ignorance and an intentional lack of intellectual curiosity.
I cross-posted our AMA with Emmaia Gelman to another Jewish sub, which is primarily a liberal Zionist honeypot.
Still, I assumed some people would be interested in participating - since they used to be regulars in our sub.
But nope.
None of them showed up for the AMA.
They were totally fine with criticizing the criticism of the ADL and taking offense to criticism of antisemitism data methodology.
But couldn't be bothered to actually ask the author of the book some questions to test their own knowledge.
Likewise, in the rHummus sub, I'm seeing the same kind of angry responses with no intellectual curiosity at all.
