Discussion/Theory Why did Phil said "got in here?" Despite being out of the Backrooms

Post image

Anyone who watch the series would know that the interrogation scene 100% happened outside of the Backrooms/Complex given that we literally saw Async employees taking Mary to the Threshold and wouldn't make sense for them to just suddenly have the interrogation to be in the Backrooms.

But then Phil said this line which cause many people who didn't watch the series to think they are still in the Backrooms which they aren't.

I know in hindsight, it isn't that deep and probably isn't that important to the lore but I'm still curious on why he said it like that.

My 2 main ideas are that either Mark duplass misspoke and the mistake was overlooked

or

that Phil didn't meant it as in that they are still in the backrooms but in a "Can you explain on what you did that cause you to be in this facility?" way.

probably that she's now in async's facility... which she didn't get into thru the standard. she went into the backrooms and then out of the backrooms into async. idk really but that makes sense in my head

Yeah, I don't know why everyone seems so hung up on this. They are not still in the complex. It's just, you didn't use the goddamn front door, so how did you get in our building from the complex?

exactly lmao

This is exactly what I was thinking on what he meant by that. It just baffled me that many people just keep on thinking that they are still in the Backrooms for some reason.

also confused why he said it like it was his company. Like he’s the owner. Guess it’s like when managers say “get out of my restaurant”

That was my catch too

I just assumed that it wasn't anything deep, and that A-SYNC simply views the Backrooms as part of their facility. It's not like Phil is going to refer to the Backrooms by another name either, like "The Complex", which Mary would not be aware of as a non-employee. It's more easy for him to describe the Backrooms as part of the A-SYNC building.

My thoughts caught the "in here" wording too. But I think he could mean Asyncs facility, as "in here". As in the interrogation room. I thought it was odd that he sort of guardedly glances at the covered glass viewers before he gives Mary more transparency on the operation. But I believe they are out of the portal and that the still life at the end although posed in a similar room is literally just a residual of Mary now created because of her prolonged connection to the backrooms.

Off hand, in addition, the scene with the scientist sitting down watching tv comfortably with his family but then having a look of deep paranoia when he see human pirate Clark on a tv commercial was weird.

Either he can't tell if he's in or out anymore. Or He doesn't want mary to know she's out.

Cause she’s still in the backrooms. They ate in the backrooms. From where they found her they took her to where they built into the backrooms from their entrance. She’s staring at the window for a reason it’s because the clouds are fixed and never move. She also knows she’s still there.

The sky also doesn't move in the parking lot of Clark's store. I don't suppose the entire real world is also in the Backrooms

u/VegetaZorch 1h ago

It does move there are multiple scenes you see it change. In this one she’s specifically staring at it before he comes in to help point it out and in every scene after it’s the exact same never changing even with angle changes it’s clearly a wallpaper. Cause it’s a movie set and is a wallpaper.

The Threshold isn't in the Backrooms. It's literally the doorway between standard and the Complex.

Also they didn't build an elaborate building like that inside the Complex when it took them a long ass time just to create the single room Complex HQ in the YT series.

Obviously Its up to writers to decide but, my best summary logically goes like:

——

  1. Async has a hidden location real-world -> uses mri machine to open portal -> enters backrooms -> discovers furniture store recreate -> discovers and sets trap for pirate clark/entities -> watches clark on cameras
  2. Mary enters backrooms through real world furniture store basement -> runs around backrooms -> comes up through backrooms re-creation of furniture store -> (still in backrooms) (no tape “doorway” on walls in which was in the real worlds basement) -> tussles with PirateClark
  3. Mary crosses paths with async people inside backrooms re-create furniture store (still in backrooms) -> async takes her through portal -> back to real world at Async hidden location. -> interrogation

——

The language might seem off but still appropriate because they were talking about the subject as in the location. Not “here” as in “where we are right now”, but could be accurate since the portal allows access to the backrooms.

Sort of like going to a friends house and being in the driveway and saying “we are here”. They are not physically inside the house but.. here.

They didn’t leave the backrooms. I firmly believe that entities can’t exist outside of the backrooms. Which is why the workers were still in hazmat suits and capn Clark was shown tied up in a room. And also why there was magically a wall outside of the store entrance when they got back to what appeared to be the furniture store. We’ve already seen that Async sets up little outposts in the back rooms. I think she was just brought to their backrooms home base, so to say.

Look at the timeline. There's absolutely no way they had a full building like that, complete with several hallways, staff, interrogation rooms, multiple stories, the whole works, built inside the Complex within a few months.

They left the Backrooms and were inside Async HQ in Standard. The whole scene where Mary got dragged through the Threshold solidifies that they left the Complex and are back in Standard. And since we see no one go back into the Complex in the movie, nor do we see anyone in Hazmat suits, it's very safe to assume that they did indeed leave the Backrooms.

I'm curious what you think broke the glass door in FF3?

1

u/The_Fox_Fellow 2h ago

the thing that tipped me off was the completely unmoving sky visible through the windows behind mary

it could have just been poor set design/editing, but with how seamless the special effects are everywhere else in the movie it was strange to me that that of all things looked like it was just painted onto a wall behind the glass

ive heard somewhere that all the skies in the movie were actually painted and edited in to keep the movie feeling liminal the whole way through.

I think the entire movie takes place in the backrooms. I know people think its just to expression of the liminality of life nowadays in the movie, but I think the slow falling down at the end and at different parts is showing that its ALL part of the backrooms. Imagine what falling UP another level would look like...

The still lives are one part, but the people themselves are just much better still lives.

If there is a center point it all falls away from, Clarks whole purpose is to be in an ad that is seen by that person, or just to be an ad and sales person. Its why he exists when no one comes into the store, because he needs to exist to influence that outside point, but the rest is just... pointless.

So when he says "I like it in here. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I'm... Like I'm right where I'm supposed to be." its because he has been in the backrooms as a complex still life forever. When Mary chooses to change and leave, she literally becomes a sentient version of a still life.

its like Ivan in the other parts of Kanes work saying you have always been here, its because they have always existed in the backrooms, because they are not the "Prime" thing

I think it was just weird wording

No offense but nah

I figured they set up shop and kind of worked out of the backrooms

4

u/Luyyus 1h ago

They couldn't have built such a complex (no pun intended) building inside the backrooms when it took them months to secure a single room for an internal HQ. That's just not how construction works.

u/luckyfox7273 1h ago

This is one of the two answers.

Maybe the Mary we see at the end is a Still Life that just formed perfectly, and Phil is asking her to literally explain how she happened. Like, explain her genesis mechanically. The one we see at the very end is an imperfect still life in a different copy of that room. He's trying to study her. The real Mary is in a conferencw room or an exam room being checked out, or was at one point.

None of that's my theory, mind you. But going a bit off the rails can be fun.

She left through one portal (furniture store) and ended up god knows where. Canada? They know she can't have come in through their front door.

How the hell there's a very nearly perfect Ottoman Empire built right at the gate of THEIR portal that they boobytrapped is what gets me. Async must have found Clark's portal at some point and seen the store to replicate it so well in an attempt to lure in Pirate Clark or even human Clark.

The Backrooms on their own can't do that, unless they can.

  1. She ended up in back in California, at ASYNC's facility not far from where she started.

  2. The backrooms can just do that, and there's no proof that the store copy is close to the threshold or not, it's probably just in the kelowna branch somewhere past the broken wall in Everything Must Go.
