Olivia taking inspiration from legends of multiple genres (Kendrick, Robert Smith, David Byrne, Stevie Nicks) puts her leagues ahead of the majority of gen Z pop artists in terms of album craft and versatility

I keep telling people, Olivia Rodrigo has a future as a Queen of Pop successor. She isn't stagnant in the music she takes inspiration from, and the raw emotion and vulnerability she injects in her songs resonates really fucking hard with a lot of people, not just young women.

That Robert Smith track is insane. She also brought out a lot of people she was inspired by in her festival. I think that's gonna carry her long term.

David Byrne selected her as one of the best living American songwriters for a Rolling Stone poll and I think he was right.

I haven’t followed Olivia’s music much, but getting David Byrne’s stamp of approval as one of the best fucking songwriters today?? Holy shit I gotta tune in

She also brought him out as a special guest during her concerts and he had a cameo in her music video from yesterday

That Kenny photo is very funny, that flint-eyed look gives the impression he’s like “alright bruh” when it’s used with something.

Olivia is on another level compared to other pop artists imo. Her most recent album is one of my favorites of the year surprisingly.

The Pop girls love him.

She seriously loves name dropping older respected artists any chance she gets.

And that's awesome! You should give credit to those that inspire you!

I feel like it’s less about wanting to credit them and more so to gain street cred from all the music snobs.

While Kendrick is the exception here, she’s being trying to build herself a indie rockstar brand image so she regularly name drops old legends to try and associate herself to them.

Or... she's just a young artist who takes inspiration from prominent artists and isn't afraid to mention it. The podcast just decided to highlight this particular quote because it was interesting.

This is such a cynical take I don't think Olivia is being disingenuous when she references her insipirations

They name drop her too. David Byrne picked her as one of the best living American songwriters for Rolling Stone

I dont hear the influence when i listen expectations. Maybe I'm missing something but Olivias song sounds like general pop song.

She's talking about the lyrics. She's not saying she made a rap song

Please read more if this is your take from this 😭

Please enlighten me. She had to pay taylor swift too for using similar music to her or smth and now she is trying to piggyback off of kendrick. I know most you guys wouldnt care buf i think its pretty reasonable to call her out for this

It's actually super clear from the quote in the post alone... she wanted to have a catchy and memorable one-liner (a mantra) a central message in the song. Nothing says it's supposed to sound like a rap song or emulate Humble in anyway beyond that lyrical theme.

What i think is she copied the cadence of the song which ahe has done in past with other singers too so to not get backlash she is saying this. Cause mo way is that song aimilar to any song of kendrick in any way
