I look back at the last provincial election, if "not voting" had been a party/candidate, the Not Voting Party would have won a supermajority. I guess that's what happens when you call an election...on the heels of a couple other elections...in the run up to Christmas...during a postal strike. Terrible example of democracy in action. I still recall some local mental giants ranting during the last provincial election, "Ain't no way I'm voting for no Jagmeet or Trudeau!" 🤦 "Uhhhh...they're not on the ballot bro..."

Stupid people voted stupidly. Now they'll make more stupid people, and keep getting voted for.

I just read the email that the library sent out. I'm devastated. I've been to so many writing workshops here. Met so many great writers and learned so much. Kentville library will forever hold a place in my heart. 😪💔

This is gutting to hear. The library, in the beautifully repurposed former church, was literally one of the deciding factors for us picking Kentville when we were moving to the Valley in 2018. We spent many happy hours there escaping the summer heat with our little ones.

I would love to know how they made this decision. The busiest location in the network gets closed. It just doesn't add up.

From the looks of it they were trying to spread out the remaining open libraries. Keeping Wolfville open provides "closer" options for the Hantsport and Port Williams people. We also don't know anything about the costs for running the buildings themselves or who owns the buildings. It could be that the cost of building rental/upkeep/etc was more expensive in Kentville than some of the other locations.
This whole thing sucks.

Operating costs for the buildings is covered by the municipalities not by the library so that shouldn't have played a part. I understand spreading it out but I also don't see people travelling from hantsport to wolfville to go to the library. They are more of a local service then that and Kentville and surrounding area is a higher density and growing faster. And yes agreed this sucks. Hopefully all politicians municipal and provincial and the lib board step up and figure something out.

It burns my ass that we dropped the HST a point just to buy votes and then turn around and decimate community services. I certainly won't forget it at the polls, nor will I forget how disingenuous the communication is from this government.
You can fool some of the people some of the time, but fool me once, won't get fooled again (or something like that).

My 4 year old son loves the Kentville library. The librarians have been incredibly welcoming and kind to him. They do story time a couple times per week and have ordered books for him from other libraries. In the age of social media and AI it is so important to keep access to books for children. This is a really big loss for the community.

This. Those librarians are salt of the earth. We are in there every week and they are always so patient and kind to us. I have been chatting with them about the decisions we knew were coming and I know they were worried Kentville would be on the chopping block. Never for once did I think it would legitimately be on this list. I am crushed and disgusted. My kids are upset, too.

NSCC libraries gutted HRCE libraries gutted Community libraries gutted
The war is lost, the stupidification of the masses has already passed the tipping point.

It's not just their desire to make us stupid, the biggest aim of this campaign is to destroy the fabric that holds our communities together.

This is a short sighted, horrific choice that will cause more crime, has taken away a place of safety, and will surely have consequences. Libraries are less about books these days as providing a safe place with resources to a multitude of topics and community help.

Heard about that attempted obduction in New Minas during the fair on the weekend?

u/Kennit Jun 03 '26
Which has what to do with the library, exactly?

u/hidden-in-plainsight Jun 03 '26
Was in reference to more crime.

I would love to know how this decision was made. When private businesses are in financial strain, they don't close their busiest store. This makes no sense.

Shame to see libraries close. That being said I’ve been in 2 of those semi regularly to access a printer (and once a fax machine too lol) and they were always pretty much empty, lots of issues with the equipment and issues such as those. So they were clearly struggling. Still sad situation

Is anyone protesting yet? Something scheduled soon? Guess we need to start fundraising to keep our public spaces open
