Sararah Darby stepped gingerly over the chaos that was once her office. Three thugs were sprawled across the floor in various states of consciousness (or unconsciousness, as it were). Idiots, she thought. If they had wanted to surprise her, they wouldn’t have signed in at the front desk. The bellhop, helpful boy that he was, had called ahead, giving her much-needed time to put away the bottles of good whisky, her family photos, and give her secretary an early lunch.

Small shards of glass crunch underfoot, and she curses under her breath. Bending down, she picks up her P.I. diploma. The frame is damaged beyond repair, the glass covering shattered, and the document torn to the point of being illegible.

“Damn. Getting the university to send me another copy is going to cost me, like, 30 bucks! I graduated with distinction, you know. Distinction. Not everyone can say that.”

One thug, a green-scaled brute larger than the rest, was groggily coming to his senses. He props himself up on one arm, murmurs an apology, and begins rummaging through his rumpled jacket.

“Uh…I got…I got fifteen. Can I owe you?”

The room is briefly in shadow as a grand zeppelin crosses in front of the sun, making its way lazily across the skies of New Gehenna like some bloated whale full of krill.

It’s almost beautiful,  she thinks to herself. An eclipse on a Tuesday afternoon. After several seconds of blissful reverie, she pushes the thought from her mind. Business now, poetry later.

She snatches the proffered rumpled bills and pulls out a chair, the only one in the room still intact, sitting on it with a grunt.

“Great. Now, you can start by telling me who hired you...”
