This is my first long-form video, featuring arguably the most brilliant naval commander to have ever lived.

It's a shame that more people in the West don't know about the incredible story of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. I first learned about Admiral Yi only a couple years ago, from another short history series on YouTube.

I wanted to create a deep-dive that showed the tactical genius, political betrayal, and impossible odds that led up to one of the most pivotal naval battles in world history: The Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597.

To bring this 16th-century conflict to life, I spent some weeks researching the historical record, (which you'll see cited throughout the video), and used generative tools to recreate the period's imagery, battle maps, and audio.

I really enjoyed learning about this time period along the way.

PS
I'd love to hear any feedback from fellow history buffs or creators. And if I got something wrong, please feel free to roast me here.

Anyone interested in the ancient history of Korea might have a look at this book.

Given that Korea was part of Japan at that time and many koreans joined the JApanese army, Do you think Korea bears some responsibility of Japan's act of aggression during world war 2, or is korea is purely the victim of Japan aggression, just like the Austria victim theory

Hello Korean history fans! I wrote a short blog post for my website about this monument in Busan, which stands near the spot where Korean and British officials first met in 1797. I hope you get a chance to read it; if you’ve been to Busan or seen this monument, I’d love to hear your comments and feedback!

Although Pacific History Guide is barely a year old, we are aggressively working toward improving the Korea page. If helping out with this effort is something that interests you, let me know! I give credit to anyone who contributes to the project. Thanks and it’s great to be a part of the Korean History community!

There is a South Korean movie called "Wang-geon, the Great" and there is a South Korean drama that has 200 episodes called "Taejo Wang Geon" both taking place in Korea during the Later Three Kingdoms period but why is there no triple-A video game taking place in Korea during the Later Three Kingdoms period ?

Can anyone explain to me what all the different feathers mean for the Jeollip/Gat (Minus the Jurip)? In various dramas/pictures in books, I see military officers and governors wearing hats with different feathers and i was wondering if there's a guide to all the ranks/feathers, like sometimes i see

1. peacock feathers (sometimes one, sometimes two)
2. peacock feathers WITH pheasant feathers
3. pheasant feathers alone
4. peacock feathers with a red tassel
5. red tassel alone
6. feathers with tiger fur
7. sometimes the king is wearing a big white or purple fluffy feather thing (what are these?)

Is it a rank thing or is it a personal choice, or is what is used change based on time period in history?

WHat if Korean Air Flight 085 was shot down on 9/11? How would if affect south korea-America relationship?

This may be a long shot, but back around the late 90s and 2000s there was an older Korean professor who I think had a couple books published in English. And he also had a column in one of the major Korean newspapers' English-language edition, dealing with topics of regional historic folklore, and getting into deep and obscure topics. It could have been the Korea Times or Dong-A Ilbo.

I remember seeing a photo of him, and vaguely remember that he looked very "professor-y," with gray hair and a beard.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? This was 20+ years ago, so I could be getting some of the details mixed up.

So this university semester I am doing a seminar class for Modern Korean Social History. My papers topic is Ch’oe Namsŏn's transformation from Independent Nationalist who wrote the Declaration of Independence and was critical for the March First movement to his aggressive collaboration efforts with Imperial Japan. I am looking for advice on some possible primary source or great academic works that I can look to. My hope is that this subreddit will be able to provide insightful works and sources that may help my work. Thank you in advance.

Hello, I have a rather unusual question. I’m applying to a university program where I would study Korean history. The problem is that the school I’m applying to is quite difficult to get into. I actually got accepted this year, but unfortunately, I couldn’t enroll and honestly, I think I just got lucky because the questions happened to be quite easy for me. I don’t want to take anything lightly, so I wanted to ask if anyone knows about any activities or opportunities in Seoul that could help me “earn some extra points” for my application. I’ve already visited most museums and I’m currently studying the Korean language here, but besides that, I can’t think of much even after a long search online. That’s why I’m turning to you for advice. I’m currently in Seoul, but I can’t really afford to spend much money, so it would be great if it were something free. I thought about volunteering, but I’m not sure if there are any opportunities related to history. I’d really appreciate any suggestions, as I’d love to make the most of my stay here.

Would you say that 6/25 war is a complete good vs evil war, and NOrth korea/China were the bad guys and the US and south korea were the good guys?

Given that both Taiwan and Korea were controlled by Japan at that time, Were there any Taiwanese people migrating to Korea peninsula during the Japanese colonial period?

Hello Korean History community! As you may know, at the end of this month the University of Hawaii Press is releasing a brand new, annotated scholarly translation of Samguk Yusa (삼국유사 / 三國遺事), the famed 13th century text. The title of this edition is "Vestiges of the Three Kingdoms of Ancient Korea: A Translation of the Samguk yusa," ISBN-13: 9798880701858.

Edit as I forgot to include credits for those who worked on this: According to the U of HI Press listing: "Original translation by Frits Vos. Revised, supplemented, and annotated by Remco E. Breuker and Boudewijn Walraven. Introduction by Grace Koh and Remco E. Breuker."

I am very much looking forward to this! As far as I'm aware, the only English translation up to now has been the one published in 1972 by Yonsei University Press, by authors Ha Tae-Hung And Grafton K. Mintz. I do have a soft spot for Ha Tae-Hung's books on Korean culture from the 1970s, but they were really aimed toward more general audiences rather than really being academic.

Anyway, here's your place to discuss the new release!

Why is the spanish flu largely forgotten in Korea history even it had killed more than a hundred of thousand in Korea?

How did your family go through during the 6/25 war?

What if south korea form a personal union with Japan after ww2, where both south korea and japan remain as two independent sovereign nations, but both nations recognize the emperor of japan as the ceremonial head of states of both countries, just like the commonwealth realm (Canada, UK, Australia), would most koreans support that?
