Art / Creations Finally finished my son’s “driller gun! (Aliens inspired)

Background: My 8yo son likes to come up with fictional “weapon” designs (just toys), and asks me to build them for him. In the past I’ve made the toys out of wood. We got a 3d printer last year and I taught myself to use it. My son came up and asked me (about 4 months ago) to make him a “driller gun”, and gave me a drawing of what he wanted. So I taught myself how to design things in Blender, and have finally completed the driller gun! There’s a master switch that turns everything on. Then each button turns on a laser sight, a core warming light, then the core instead, and then gives power to the motors. There is speed control and also a trigger to turn on the drill. It was so much work (I’ll probably keep adding tweaks to it, but it was so cool to do all of this.

Dude that thing rocks and so do you. I would 💯 expect that thing to be lying around a WY shake and bake just waiting to be used as a makeshift weapon. Man if your son ever gets into Ghostbusters don't be skimping on the proton pack pics. Also....I would love to see a driller using that with a refurbed smart gunner harness. Makes perfect sense to me

Thank you!!! Took me like 3 months 😂. Soldering and wiring everything was so fun (and slightly maddening).

Thanks! I have to dial it in just a bit. Got a little rubbing going on, which slows it down a bit

seems neat. i was always interested in those alien anniversary shorts on youtube being used in a later film. one of them was called 'alien:ore' where a crew gets stuck in a mineshaft on a colony with a xenomorph. i could totally see them extending the short into a full spin off film where most of the action happens in the mine, and the 'driller gun' i could definitely see being used as a hero weapon or something during the film, like one of the boring units they just have usually laying around for heavy colony work

Um...how was this ALIENS inspired?

I don't remember a driller gun in the movie....

Power loader specifically. Why be so critical?

Sadly, pedantic shitheels are present in every fandom. Driller looks sweet, keep it up

Pardon the hockey in the background. But here is a video of the interior.

I'm not trying to be critical at all; I was confused as to where I might have missed a driller gun in the movie, that's all.

Ok. It came across the wrong way. My 8 year old was the one who came up with the idea. I decided it should look like a Wayland Yutani tool. That’s it.
