She says what? I don't hear it.

52

u/Dregaz 9h ago

She doesnt. Its a quick pained "kill me"

It’s not even that. It’s a different voice.

Check the link I posted, exactly at 1.10

That sounds like Dietrech shouting something as she backs away to me, it's not the same voice or tone as the woman on the wall.

I agree. And I imagine she’s too busy convulsing in pain to say anything intelligible.

Its the woman on the wall. Shes just saying kill me more quickly and while grunting in pain.

No I understand that she has also spoken and is grunting in pain, I just don’t hear “Mommy” - especially in any way that would be coming from her.

It sounds like Dietrich says "On it!"

I checked the shot and you don't see Dietrich mouth anything, she's just mugging in horror as she pulls away.

In the end, this is a cobbled together scene, built from what the director asked for, what the actor decided to provide, what the mixer and camera operator were able to capture, and what the editor chose to piece together.

Why the writer would write that, the director would ask for that, the actor would choose to provide that, and the editor would choose to include that boggles the mind. This is a scene about this woman dying horribly, not a touching scene about her crying out for her mother.

Beyond that, what the operator captured on film and the sound mixer snagged does not have to match up with what the editor cut together. You're seeing and hearing 8 or 9 separate things that happened and were captured independently and that the editor then laid in over each other. The noises you're hearing are different, co.pletely isolated, separately recorded wild tracks laid in where the editor chose to have people making noise, and it's not like a clean dialogue shot where they were fighting to match each actors' shouts directly with what shape their mouth was in.

Men dying on the battle field of Normandy called out for their mothers. She’s not saying it in a touching way, it’s mother help me.

As part of this scene in a movie, why would the director include this utterance and have it be buried in noise? If you're making the decision to invest that kind of character depth, why would you not actually include it in the way that you have the actor deliver the line, the way you have the DP shoot the line, and the way the line exists in the final edit?

Cameron was in a crazed rush to finish the movie so I doubt he spent time debating a moment like that

I hear her voice say "On it!" or something similar. They may have edited it in, but I'm almost positive that is her voice.

You're hearing something not there. It's just pained grunts and groans.

11

u/Das_Hydra 6h ago

You are hearing shit that simply isn't there.

12

u/Dregaz 9h ago

She doesnt say that. Shes continuing to say "kill me". At that timestamp she just says it again faster and while grunting/gasping in pain.

-17

u/poesmadness 9h ago

Sounds totally like mummy to me.

22

u/Dregaz 9h ago

It's not

-15

u/poesmadness 9h ago

She doesn't open her words with a 'K' for kill me she says 'M' for mommy.
Even if Im wrong what she's saying sounds nothing like kill me.

20

u/Dregaz 9h ago

Thats 100% what she's saying. The actress is saying it with more urgency and less annunciation to reflect a creature erupting from her chest.

Just turn on the effing subtitles.

I always wondered how long she had to have been there just waiting for what she knew was coming

Truly a fate worse than death

16

u/chunk_style1 8h ago

But still also death.

6

u/Actionhotdog_go 8h ago

Yea but a whole lot of hell you have to go thru before you actually get there

You know the worst part? A human can't survive more then 3-4 days without water, which means she was captured just a couple of days before the marines arrived. She had survived weeks with the xenomorphs running around, and was almost certainly the last adult survivor to be captured.

To be alive long enough to see the faces of your would-be rescuers, and know the bitter truth that you had been hours from rescue...

I've always felt this is the best "birthing" scene in the entire franchise.

23

u/InitiativeCreative36 8h ago

Its Dietrich saying "Damnit!"

8

u/schokoplasma 8h ago

The moment she opened her eyes was one of the greatest jump scare ever.

8

u/SteveG5000 2h ago

You’ve misheard that completely.

She says ‘oh…fiddlesticks’

u/zubergu 9h ago

Almost 40 years since I first saw this movie, seen it hundreds of times and I still skip that scene and thank you for reminding me why.

This scene was my first introduction to the Alien franchise...i immediately changed the channel it was so nightmarish and realistic...ugh

8

u/PineappleForest 9h ago

Brrrrr ... for some reason that blob of slime on her cheek is always what freaks me out the most ...

5

u/darwinDMG08 7h ago

She’s already covered in KY and Cameron was like, “hang on…”

6

u/darwinDMG08 7h ago

That’s definitely Dietrich’s voice, the woman is too busy screaming at that point. Not clear what she says but definitely not “mommy”

8

u/gorram1mhumped 9h ago

scarier than any scene in any subsequent movie

5

u/LamonsterZone 7h ago

I have this bad bitch tattooed on my arm.

Can we see it?

5

u/Euglenas 9h ago

I first saw this scene at ~8 years old. My family got to a hotel late at night and I turned on the TV. Aliens was at just a few seconds before this scene. Scared the shit out of me. Didn't even see the whole thing for like 8 more years. Watching in my friends basement, it gets to this scene and it clicked.

5

u/Steel_Commander_CAT 9h ago

Are you sure it’s “mummy”? It definitely could be but to me it almost sounds like “Dammit”

10

u/Dregaz 9h ago

Its not either. Shes saying "kill me" again more quickly while grunting in pain.

-15

u/poesmadness 9h ago

I doubt you'd say dammit if that thing was chewing it's way out of you, I'd probably call for my mom too.
Also with it being primarily a UK production lots of the supporting parts will be from english people and thats how they say mommy.

3

u/Junior_Syrup_1036 4h ago

No one in the UK uses mommy (thats american) , it's mummy

2

u/TheMansAnArse 3h ago

Nah. That’s not the woman’s voice and it’s just an unintelligible two syllable word. You’re reaching.

2

u/harrisj13 2h ago

I have two kids and when they start fighting and driving me nuts I think back to this scene…

u/BlueDetective3 Tomorrow, Together 9h ago

I've watched this movie idk how many times and never noticed it. Thanks for the insight. Someone in the comments pointed out the sound at 1:35 was possibly the queen directing her drones to attack.

2

u/Drowning_tSM 7h ago

Definitely

u/KrakenKrusdr84 9h ago

Spooked me a little when I first watched this on DVD years ago.

Hmm, do you think she refers to the old one with Brendan or the modern remake? She dies right after that, therefore I think it's the remake.
