Humor / Memes Bay 12, please.

Post image

Ripley offers to help prepare the Colonial Marines for their drop by operating a power loader, stating she has a Class-2 rating.

When she mounts the second loader and asks "Where do you want it?".

Sergeant Apone look at Hicks, laughs, and replies "Bay Twelve, please" to Ellen Ripley.

I appreciate this scene. The final showdown between Ripley and the mother - you're completely invested because you know Ripley can operate the loader, because of this scene. It's short, entertaining, and important to the final battle. Love this movie.

It’s what I mean when I say that Aliens has no fat on it, every scene has a purpose.

It’s not even just to establish that Ripley is proficient in the usage of the loaders (itself already foreshadowed earlier in the film when Burke mentions she’s been doing this on Gateway), it shows the audience how it works, how she suits up, how a loader functions etc.

It also foreshadows how Hicks is the natural next in line to Apone - up until this point Apone has been shown to be the undisputed guy in charge of the grunts, but when Ripley throws a bit of sass and innuendo their way, he visibly takes his cue from Hick’s reaction and has a laugh about it. Their interaction is a lot less public and performative - he isn’t barking orders at him or demanding updates, he’s stood discussing with him how to accomplish their task. As a result the audience is primed to accept Hicks taking charge when Apone goes down.

True, but it also places Ripley in a place of respect for them both going forward. She became more respected in the eyes of the Marines so when she suggested taking off and nuking the site... they were all in, all of them in that loading bay that saw her pulling her own to help out to prepare for the drop...

So none batted an eye when she kinda took over after the disaster looking for the colonists...

But by the end of the movie, you've forgotten about the power loader at the beginning of the movie....then Ripley comes back with it at the end and you're OH YEAH!

Crazy to think how close we came to an alternate Hicks.

u/terminal_nervoso 5h ago

Hicks was all like

Nah but in all seriousness, Hicks and Apone were basically saying ā€œyeah okay, this chick’s a badassā€. šŸ˜†

It’s also the scene that makes the Power Loader the Chekov’s Gun of Aliens.

Fuckin' right, that's the same thing I always thought, too. They're like 'Fuck, we were wrong on this one.'

I loved the sergeant’s answer to her. It was such a mean but blunt response.

ā€œI feel like a 5th wheel around here. Is there anything I can do?ā€

ā€œI don’t know. Is there anything you can do?ā€

Love that.

They released a hyoebeast version of her shoes called The Moonstompers in the mid-aughts. I bought a pair and they were awesome

Seikos are still being rad in the future!

The writing is very good.

I remember reading that Cameron was writing more than one screenplay at the same time. He rented a place with a desk but no phones, and then brought in lots of paper, pencils, pens, and a typewriter, and wrote and rewrote the scripts many times until he thought it got it right.

And I think the suits barely interfered.

Hicks starts falling for her big time in this scene. Michael Biehn is such a cutie.

I'm overdue watching this and the first one again

That laugh and line live rent free in my head!
Man I love that movie!

Did this scene have sensual connotation and euphemism?

To me it was misogyny interrupted. Assuming her to be a head case in addition to being female, when she proves she can come up with the goods, they take her as she was. It was wonderous to watch it as a young woman, they weren't threated by her being smart, strong and useful, they laughed WITH her, they accepted her.

20

u/kickaguard 6h ago

Yeah they don't necessarily not believe her but she hasn't shown them much at that point and she's kinda got an attitude because she's clearly capable and they laugh with her. "Our bad, you got moves. Bay 12, please".

7

u/JaegerBane 2h ago

I always took it less about misogyny and more that as she’s not a grunt, she’s not taken seriously… until she proves she can step up.

There’s hints of this already dropped by this point - Vasquez is mildly disparaging of her, her flip out over Bishop is shrugged off, and her emotional state when briefing the marines isn’t taken seriously until she hardens up confronting Vasquez. I’m not necessarily sure misogyny is really a big deal amongst the marines, as they have multiple women in their ranks and Vasquez’s comeback to Hudson is clearly something that goes down well amongst them.

This sort of ā€˜i can’t take you seriously unless you’ve done enough drops’ attitude is ironically something that was a big deal in the Starship Troopers novel, that Cameron had all the actors read. There’s one passage that Rico describes about military history and leadership, and how leadership from prior generations wouldn’t work in the mobile infantry because the troops wouldn’t be able to take a general seriously who didn’t directly deploy with his forces - in his words, you could talk about Napoleon’s (I think? Been a while since I read the novel) accomplishments and the infantryman’s response would be ā€˜yeah, but where did he drop?’.

They even bring this directly into the film with Gorman freaking out over the drop and the marines just shaking their heads when he mentions it’s his second.

Of course when Ripley steps up and gets on with it, and throws some sass back at them in keeping with their attitude in the squad, the two marines crack up and accept her.

I watched this as a very young man and between Ripley, Vasquez, and yes, even Ferro, to this day I am an absolute sucker for competent women. I don't honestly care what it is, if you know your shit inside and out and you're confident about it even in the face of opposition?
Hook, line, and sinker, I'm done for. Competence is goddamn sexy.

u/smiley82m 8h ago

Did her dossier to them not include her current and former rank and scope of responsibilities? I know the jarheads wouldnt have that information but the Gunnery Sergeant and Lieutenant should have that info already and not be surprised. Did they not get a dossier of her and it was just Burke in charge and not caring?

My wife and I quote this scene all the time.

As far as crews go in this series this lot was a good one, even the weak links were not all that bad

Me, 50% of the time, whenever a female coworker asks me where to put something or where I want something stored — even (or especially) if she already knows or should know: [awkward little pause, followed by varying degrees of laughter depending on the situation] before finally giving her the actual answer. Sometimes I’m already in the middle of another conversation, too. ^^
The problem is, they actually enjoy it sometimes and even try to bait me into doing it for free, so now I have to figure out every single time whether they genuinely don’t know or are just trying to trick me into giving them the quote. šŸ˜‚ Only genuine confusion gets the full experience — unless I can tell they really want the quote and the setup is just too perfect to pass up. Then I might make an exception. šŸ˜
Meanwhile, when I’m chatting with other coworkers, we have our own special kind of laughter that they absolutely love us for. It’s a whole routine at this point.
