Why you can understand English perfectly but still freeze when you have to speak
This is one of the most frustrating things about learning a language. You can follow a movie, read an article, even understand a fast conversation, and then someone asks you a simple question and your mind goes blank.
The reason is that understanding and speaking use different skills. Listening and reading are recognition. You see or hear a word and your brain matches it to something it already knows. Speaking is recall. You have to pull the right word out of nowhere, build the sentence, and say it, all in a couple of seconds. If you’ve mostly practiced the first kind, the second one is still untrained.
The fix is boring but it works. Say things out loud, even when nobody is listening. Narrate what you’re doing while you cook, answer questions in your head as full sentences, or repeat a line from a show right after you hear it. Short and often beats long and rare, because you’re training your brain to retrieve words quickly, not just to recognize them.
You don’t need a speaking partner to start. You just need to stop keeping English only in your head.
What helped you start speaking more, if you’ve got past this stage?

Do you feel like a slightly different person when you speak English?
I've heard people say they feel more confident, more direct, or even funnier when speaking another language. Others feel like they lose part of their personality because they can't express themselves the way they normally would.
I think that's interesting. When you speak your native language, you have years of experience expressing your humour, emotions, opinions, and personality without thinking about it. In another language, you might know exactly what you want to say but struggle to find the right words or get the tone across.
And sometimes it's not even about your level of English. You might be perfectly capable of having a conversation but still feel like you're not quite expressing yourself.
Do you feel like the same person when you speak English, or does your personality change a little?

Helping with a text
Hello! As native speakers, can you help me correct this text? I am just practicing my writing skills and I want to work with real people.
Thanks in advance!
Man, Cinema is paramount to me. I love cinema with all my heart and with enough passion, to become a director in the future. I hope, I will able to achieve everything my dreams. Because I am responsible for my future. I can't just sit on the sofa and play computer
Sure, I know, you need take a breath. But can you understand, like I said, movies are all for me. The biggest plus movies in the English learning process is lies in listening practice. I.e, you can watch movies ans simultaneously practice your listening skills.

What English word do you overuse?
Some English words fit almost all situations, even when there're better alternatives. Words like actually, literally, just, and really can be part of everyday speech.
What English word do you find yourself using too often, and what makes it so hard to replace with something else?

Online US Englisch Kurs für Anfänger
Moin zusammen

Native English speakers needed for a new university study on English expressions
Hi everyone!
I'm a graduate student in Japan conducting research in English linguistics.
I'm looking for native speakers of English to participate in a new pilot study on how natural different English expressions sound in conversational situations.
I've completely revised three questionnaires and am now collecting new responses.
Survey links:
Part 1 — English expressions in different conversations:
https://forms.gle/Ug8Lz6WBiKaKFc9BA
Part 2 — Expressions and conversational continuations (highest priority):
https://forms.gle/u7GQib4W57EAyywU6
Part 3 — Comparing expressions across different situations:
https://forms.gle/NuZZGS3LgFzuy87M7
Estimated time: Approximately 10–15 minutes per part.
You may complete one, two, or all three parts. They are independent, so there's no need to complete them in numerical order.
I would especially appreciate responses to Part 2, followed by Part 3, but every part needs participants.
You'll read short conversations and judge how natural particular English expressions sound. You may also leave comments explaining your judgments.
No knowledge of linguistics or formal grammar is required.
Please complete each new questionnaire only once.
Participation is voluntary. Responses will be anonymized and may be used for academic research, publications, or conference presentations.
Thank you very much for your time and help!
