Question Is There Any "Bad" Areas of Lethbridge?

I'm not planning to move to Lethbridge or anything, I'm just really curious to see if there's any areas that could be considered bad in Lethbridge. I doubt there's anything comparable to bad areas in Edmonton in Lethbridge, but I could see something comparable to Calgary's rougher areas in LB.

On Google Streetview the only areas of Lethbridge that seemed like they could be problematic were Senator Buchanan and Downtown. But even then those just seemed kinda meh more than anything.

I'm curious to see what the local opinions are. This kinda subject has always interested me as I have lived in a lot of cities and as someone who grew up in a lower-income family, we ended up living in a lot of areas that were kind of shady. So it's really interesting seeing what areas are considered shady by one city's standards in comparison to another city's standards (ex. the "shady" parts of Calgary would be considered fairly chill by Edmonton standards)

Downtown is interesting but the only thing i ever been approached about was money and when you say no they usually just go on their way. If someone really does need assistance, they have “the watch” people who can safely walk you or take you where you need to go.

People equate homelessness with “bad area”. There are homeless ppl in Lethbridge (downtown park area, north side by the men’s shelter). But I frequently take public transit from West to downtown and walk around the area and I have never felt “unsafe”. Homeless ppl don’t want to be interacting with others, they will occasionally ask for money and then move along.

The most scary / unsafe thing about lethbridge is the lack of transit and walk-ability. I fear getting ran over as I’m crossing the road in downtown far greater than being attacked by an unhoused person.

This. As a cyclist and pedestrian, some of the motorists in this city genuinely scare me.

u/durtydubz Jun 21 '26

As a motorist I am equally afraid of other motorists

I don't notice that the motorists in Lethbridge are particularly bad, by Canadian standards. Being a pedestrian is certainly "worse" than a few European cities I've walked and/or biked in but not noticeably different than other mid sized or small Canadian cities. Vancouver, Calgary, and probably other big cities are only really better in high pedestrian areas.

Yeah this. I even worked in Atomic for a few weeks (before I realized how insane the owner was) and the homeless folks were always coming in.

Never felt like I was in danger. Lived on the Northside too, not really bad at all. Just keep your car doors locked and your house door locked.

There are no parts of the city where it is dangerous to walk around or anything, just some areas where you want to lock your car doors. The vast majority of the crime in the city is just petty theft.

Galt gardens is dangerous. Me and some friends were jumped by a group of crackheads with weapons just for walking by

44

u/SirLunatik Jun 20 '26

And I was once hit with a 2x4 in the uplands...

One instance doesn't make it dangerous. I'm not saying it is safe either, but we need to be careful what we call dangerous because shitty people can do shitty things anywhere

12

u/heavysteve Jun 20 '26

Exactly. Pretty much every instance of violence ive seen in town is just drunk college kids outside the clubs or bars. Same as anywhere else.

10

u/kmsiever Jun 20 '26

Galt gardens is not dangerous. I have walked through it dozens of times, often at night, and no one has even threatened violence.

3

u/lglwilson7 Jun 20 '26

Idk what to tell you buddy, a bunch of guys with 2x4s, hatchets, and machetes attacking a group of students sounds like violence to me. Maybe you just blend in a little better idk

It's one of those cases that lived experiences don't matter, unless you are in a demographic that fits a specific group.

3

u/Grrranny Jun 23 '26

Interesting - I'm a middle aged woman with mobility issues and I sit and read in Galt Gardens fairly regularly with zero issues ever. In fact, I don't believe I've ever even been asked for change in the Galt Gardens.

-1

u/cadius72 Jun 20 '26

I had an instance in Galt Gardens too

I call bullshit. Nobody in Lethbridge can afford to smoke crack.

u/RyBreadRyBread Jun 20 '26

My idiot friends and I in high school used to do what we called the "Galt Gardens challenge". The challenge is to run from one end of galt gardens to the other and back after 1 AM. That's it. From this experience I can assure you SOMEONE is buying the crack

A somewhat objective measure is the LPS Crime Mapping. You can see differences especially if filtering by a type of crime. In general Lethbridge is very safe, but there are some areas I would avoid if moving here.

The traffic violation map isnt working.... odd

I moved away from Lethbridge a few years back, but here's my personal experience.

  • North Side (especially around Center Value Mall - by Save On or the area by No Frills) is a bit sketchy, but just like downtown, if you mind own business, it's not terrible.
  • Downtown can seem sketchy, but it's actually really cool. There's lots of neat restaurants and shops. They have festivals, etc. Other than parking problems and the occasional person visibly using drugs, it's not terrible.
  • Bikes are stolen all the time.
  • 99% of people from unhoused to rich hoity toity just mind own business and go about their day.
  • Drivers are terrible.
  • Transit is terrible.
  • Most areas are pretty good.
  • Lethbridge does have a higher crime rate, but it's dropping. Most of the crime is like drug use and bike theft.

If you have situational awareness, some kindness, lock up your belongings and are good at minding own business, Lethbridge is just fine.

Bike theft has gotta be the most common crime in Lethbridge.

6

u/heavysteve Jun 20 '26

The reason Lethbridge scores so high on the crime severity index is actually because of the amount of frauds and scams(which count as felonies). People targeting the elderly and easy-to-dupe, which, by looking at our local support for idiocy like separatism, there are victims everywhere.

3

u/_6siXty6_ Jun 20 '26

Not entirely true. Firstly, Canada doesn't have felonies. It is a summary offense, and will usually be pursued as a summary, IF under $5000. There were a total of 804 fraud cases, which accounted for only 7.1% of total crime in the city. This also included things such as fraud returns at stores. Mischief, assault, failure to comply with release orders, shoplifting under 5000, and theft under 5000 were all more common than fraud. The next closest to fraud in terms of crime volume was break and enter, which there was 760 cases.

There was a previous statement that Lethbridge is one of the more dangerous places to live. However, that statement was a misrepresentation of facts.

Lethbridge has a very high rate of 9-1-1 callers reporting petty issues, mostly drug related. Violent crime doesn't happen here much at all, and when it does, it's an isolated incident that quickly gets contained.

Petty theft is the most common crime here, and the most common thing to be stolen is bicycles. Had one of mine stolen years ago from inside of a private area with 10ft fencing all around. It was a screaming metal deathtrap so no great loss.

I wouldn't say there are any areas that are worse, so long as you're smart and lock up anything you don't want to lose. Thieves here are opportunist, and quickly move on to easier targets

When my family first moved here. My daughter was punched in the face out of no where. Downtown. A year ago, my husband, walking home at from work was hit in the back of the head at a light. The guy ended up with 6 months in jail. Proven in court my husband didn't see the attack coming behind him. The person who did it was drunk and came out of a liquor store.

17

u/Captain-Bedhead Jun 20 '26

No. I've lived all over Lethbridge for several years, including on the north side for a few years and downtown for a few years. I never felt unsafe. Unhoused people and those suffering from addictions have more to be afraid of, as any violence is almost always amongst themselves. If you treat people with kindness and compassion, you will never see any conflict.

6

u/kmsiever Jun 20 '26

As someone who has lived downtown for over 20 years, I agree.

3

u/GunnyTHighway Jun 20 '26

Only thing that is really a problem is petty theft. Just lock your doors and you will be fine. The homeless population may approach you and ask for money, but if you say I have no change, they will just move on. Lethbridge overall is a safe city.

4

u/dalcer Jun 20 '26

If your talking about your own safety then youre fine, however the safety of your belongings is at risk literally everywhere in the city

Got a bike? Not yours anymore

Forgot to lock your car door one time? Hope you didnt have anything you cared about in there

Lethy consistently has one of the highest crime rates in canada but the city itself is safe to live in

4

u/kmsiever Jun 20 '26

Lethbridge high crime rates are for the metro area. If you look at data for the city itself, it is pretty low compared to their Alberta municipalities.

1

u/cadius72 Jun 20 '26

Even if your car door is locked your belongs still might not be safe.

2

u/dalcer Jun 20 '26

Yeah honestly true

Once had my window smashed in when i left my car parked at hudsons overnight, i dont keep anything in my car

3

u/kmsiever Jun 20 '26

Yep. Our vehicles are kept completely empty and clean, and this is one of the reasons.

1

u/Inevitable_Serve9808 Jun 22 '26

I was lucky. The first time I ever left my vehicle overnight in the city I forgot my wallet on the dashboard and neglected to lock the doors. I virtually never leave my wallet in my car, even now with a locked garage, so I was shocked I'd forgotten it and thankful no one had touched my car. This was 12 years ago and, while not in a super-quiet part of town, our front door was almost never locked and, despite sometimes coming home to a few strangers in the living room they were friends of housemates or former residents visiting.

5

u/heavysteve Jun 20 '26

Not really, it's all very safe. Even the parts I would consider "the most sketchy" are still extremely safe.

2

u/Larry-Man Jun 24 '26

As someone who minds their own business the only place I’ve personally ever been physically assaulted was the west side at 11pm ish on a weekday.

Be polite to homeless folks and they’ll usually leave you TF alone. I’m a woman if that helps.

the entire fucking north side

1

u/Educational-Maize706 Jun 26 '26

Southbrook and West are newly developed areas, you can try there. South has less crowd while West is huge. South is near to every store. Takes like 5 minutes for every thing.

1

u/doeeyeddollyy Jul 04 '26

Downtown at night is a bit scary. But otherwise not really. Just be smart

1

u/BurnerAcc096 Jul 14 '26

Nah, really safe actually besides bikes getting stolen. Maybe downtown? but for me it's mainly social anxiety due to how many people are there all the time lol

1

u/AntiDeodorant Jul 19 '26

The entire fucking north side

u/Previous_Search3122 23d ago

Depends on the situation. I have a found family so I wouldn't move them into Winston Churchill or south of the downtown a few blocks. I would also stay away from south of North side Canadian Tire.

That's just me though with a young family.

That being said no neighborhood in Lethbridge is the slums and riddled with gang activity like you would see on TV.

Crime index here is high because it's full of minor crime. Not many murders, attempted murders, or anything like that.

Which areas have you seen those?

0

u/Guardian_Demon213 Jun 20 '26

People often joke about the North side being Sketchy in general if that helps but im not over there enough to give a solid judgement

7

u/kmsiever Jun 20 '26

It is based on classism and racism going back over 100 years when only the miners lived on the Northside.

1

u/PhaseNegative1252 Jun 20 '26

Used to be Hardieville, a hamlet full of miners and their families. The notion of the north side being sketchy goes back to racism and classism from that time.

You couldn't pay me to live in the London Road area, especially in proximity to downtown.

I also wouldn't live in the area between Stafford Drive N, 13 Street N, 9 Ave N, and North Canadian Tire.

I would also stay away from Legacy Ridge with that big transitional housing complex built right on the front door.

Big picture though Lethbridge is nothing compared to Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto. But when it comes to Lethbridge, those are the areas I wouldn't raise a family in.

Northside stinks!

2

u/Grrranny Jun 23 '26

You're smelling your own attitude.

smell your own first!

-3

u/Maleficent_Thought95 Jun 20 '26

Are there any good area’s in Lethbridge? No.

-5

u/h2ofield Jun 20 '26

Is it now once a month we get dumb ass topics like this?

-6

u/auscadtravel Jun 20 '26

Avoid the north end. Junkies and unhoused. They wandered down my street constantly and broke inot my car, came home from work and a druggie was asleep on my front porch. Do not live in the north, its cheap for a reason.

8

u/nebulancearts Jun 20 '26

North is fine, lived there years ago close to Westminster.

Of course we had homeless folks but they never bothered us. And, Northside isn't cheap anymore (coming from the fact my previous landlord tried to gouge us on our renewal).

1

u/h2ofield Jun 21 '26

what a load of crap! cheap? come pay my property tax!
